Hi all! I finaly moved and the workstation is running this morning
After fighting with the new camera I manage to get some work on the snorkel. As the rest of the kit it will recieve the voyager upgrades. This is what I got done:
It feels so nice being able to get back on the bench after a long month of boxing and unboxing stuff
Phil.

Hi all, I got my friuls today so I hope to start on my Chieftain this week .
There´s some cool builds on here and it doesn´t surprise
me that Sal has finished another one of his master pieces
already
Nice build Sal, the only real prob with kit kit is the fiddly tracks but I´d build it again if I had one in the
stash.
@ Ian: nice scratch work on your Chieftain, but please do not forget the MRS (muzzle reference system) on the front of the barrel. You got the light source on the turret (scratched box mid turret) but you need the reflector. I´ts a mirror with a large rubber cover at the end of the barrel Heres a pic:
@ Jon: As your Chieftain is a earlier mark it does not have the MRS, so please don´t add it to yours.
see you later
Paul

Hey Paul.....thanks for the photo and the kind words. The muzzle "thingie" is in the works. That was one of the next pieces of scratchbuilding to do. I also will be scratchbuilding an FV-432 stowage box for the turret bustle as I have seen several 4/7 Dragoons and Kings Hussars Chieftains sporting those in Berlin as a retrofit. That will make the turret look nice and busy.
Best wishes, Ian

Not quite sure what the MRS is but if you can explain it, I can make sure I don't

Well it’s been awhile since I did any updates. Some very interesting builds going on, a lot of chieftains and centurions.
Here is my latest update. Finished the one thing that drew my attention to the M48A1 was the jettisonable fuel tank rank on the back hull. It was a very easy item to build with the only photos I could find of the thing. I also started cleaning up so of the parts for the rest of the build. Unfortunately I ran into another part that had some shrinkage in it, the driver’s hatch. This will have to be either open of used the tamiya part in order to have it close, still debating.

Looks great, here's mine with the same upgrade set and scratch built fuel rack. Adding all those bolts was a nightmare but fun! Looks like your sponson boxes are backwards though, flat side should face out

James your M48 looks pretty sweet. Thanks for the heads up on the parts. I did not notice how the parts were suppose to face Easy fix, I was able to pop them loose before the glue fully set.

O.k. Jon, then lets give you a small part of the gunners training for the Chieftain Mk8 and 9.
Before any firing of the main armament takes place, the gunners sight must alligned to the main gun. This is done using the MBS (muzzle bore sight). This is placed in the muzzle of the main gun and the gunner then lays the gun onto a target. The second crew member then looks through the MBS and corrects the gunner until the MBS is on target. The gunner then corrects his sight so that both are alligned.
When firing commences the barrel will heat up and warp, to compensate this there are 2 things:
1. Thermal sleeve around the barrel
2. MRS- Muzzle reference system
The sleeve is designed to keep the barrel at a constant temperature to mimize the warping. The MRS is designed to allow the gunner to keep the main gun and sight alligned, without anybody having to go out of the vehicle during an engagement.
The MRS works like this, a light source on the turret roof is reflected from the reflector at the muzzle of the main gun, directly into the gunners sight. On his range scale
is an MRS mark which he can adjust to the reflection he sees at the end of the main gun.
Here´s a plan view, hope you can read my writing:
O.k.
You will find this system or a very similar one on all modern AFV´s (Abrams, Leopard, Leclerc, Merkava) and the Chieftain from Mk.8 onwards.
As you are building a Mk.5 none of the above mentioned should be added, and it´s not in the Tamiya kit anyway.
Hope I haven´t confused you all

To further comment on the MRS, my experiance with it was on the M1 and we didn't depend on it too much. We did use it to check the boresight during gunnery runs and to quickly refer the sights if it looked way off but nothing beat a good boresight.
I have to thank the British tankers because they developed the muzzle boresight device that really improved tank gunnery. Before we got it the best we could do was thread cross hairs across the muzzle and binoculars through the breech. It took the old tankers awhile to see its worth though.
We were taught tht the last 2 feet of the guntube determine the strike of the round and thats the most important part to align with the sights.
lesson over back to the bench

Hi Tom,
if you can zoom into the muzzle of a Chieftain main gun.
There you will find 4 small notches, and guess what they are for

Here is my big progress on the snorkel. I had to replace the end plates of the telescoping tube since the tamiya part was slightly too big....scratching time
Tam part was exceding the pe I got from voyager model.

Update.
Basic assembly done. Ready for paint.
Base coat of paint. I trtied to get a more gray/green look but it dried more green. I'll see how it looks and adjust with gray washes as needed.
Masked off and sprayed white.
Masking tape removed and a sneak peak before I set it aside to dry overnight.
Dried and rest of assembly done. It needs some touchup and I'm still debating on the gray washes. It looks more grayish in person than in the pictures. Then again, I'm colorblind.
I'm declaring this one basically done. There's still some touch up needed. I'm probably not going to do a base for it. I'll give it some time to take some better pictures for the Campaign Gallery.

Nice job there Alex! I like the winter scheme you`ve done.
that said, it is not too late for a gloss coat and some pinwashes or a overall wash if you like it. This would really get this one out of the park. It would get the fine details into the light and give it extra crispy detailing. And I`m pretty sure the shovel would be some kind of metalic, worn color and wood...they were when I was in the military even on bran new vehicules.
This is my two cents...Itdoes looks mighty good as it is
Congrats on a sweet build.
Phil.

Well I'm moving along with my Cent, Mr. Surfacer500 on the turret to add to the cast effect and I replaced the back deck grab handles with brass rod. I have the Voyager photo etched set as well but it looks overly complex and certain parts are just as good plastic as brass.

Philippe, Thanks. I think it does need something to bring out the detail a bit more. I'll probably drybrush the green again and reverse drybrush the white a bit. Maybe add a green-gray wash to blend the surface detail all together. Probably a steel and rust wash, though I'll do it heavier on the green. I figure the white would be new and show less wear. The shovel is one of the touch up things I still need to do. All the pioneer tools need it. Periscopes and spare track.
