I decided to take a swipe at a ribbon for this campaign:

It is based off of the British anti-aircraft badge, which is this:

Vance not as nice as the Marder Ribbon the image gets a little distorted when shrunk, sort of looks like a sailboat What does the blue strip signify, if anything

Blue strip doesn't mean anything - just looked weird with nothing there, i figured maybe there would be more AA campaigns in the future that could have more stripes, and aircraft are in the sky and that is blue - all pretty retarded reasons really, but most designs decisions are kinda weak like that anyway.

I agree it isn't really very clear when shrunk (a common problem)

Could you have subconsciously put the blue there as British Royal Artillery Arm of Service colour is blue on red? Well it is a reason for it to be there, shame the arm gets distorted as I thought it a really cool design. Keep up the good work.

All the best,

Paul

I think I found my entry to this Campaign.

More photos at: http://militarymodels.co.nz/tag/8-8cm-flak-37-selbstfahrlafette-auf-18-ton-zugkraftwagen/

Of course it's made by Trumpeter and has individual like tracks too!

Yeah, it's kinda a 2-for-1 kit as I like the truck, it has tracks, and it's an Anti-Aircraft Vehicle.

Uh, wait a minute... that's 3.

I'll just build the Sgt. York some other time.

Your top one is the Sd.Kfz.9 version, the Trumpeter kit is the Sd.Kfz.8 version. Try these photos for the Sd.Kfz.8 -

http://militarymodels.co.nz/2012/03/26/photo-collection-8-8-cm-flak-18-sf-auf-fgst-zgkw-12t-sd-kfz-8-bunkerknacker/

There's a lot more photos available for the Sd.Kfz.8 version but I'd love to see someone do the Sd.Kfz.9 version in plastic.

Cool, an expert!

So what's the difference between the two?

Similar in size. The 8 is a little bit smaller than the 9. Main difference in the setup is the armoured cab on the 8 is lower with only a small raised section for the driver. The 8 had a small angle mounted rear ammo box and the 9 had a larger one built onto the rear of the platform which opened on either side.

The 9 also has fold down sides similar to the Sd.Kfz.7 mobile FlaKs to increase the working platform.

I guess the main difference is the 9 was built to be a mobile FlaK gun so more thought given to being able to use it 360 degrees where the 8 was built with taking out grond targets so shooting straight ahead was more important.

You can build the Sd.Kfz.9 version but it gets really exepensive as you need the Tamiya FAMO, a DML 8.8cm FlaK 37 and either the Tiger Models or Alliance Model Works conversions.

Both conversions are about the same price ( $150USD ), both got the engine side covers wrong, the TMD one has the correct travel lock and is simpler to work with, the AMW one has a lot more PE but the better platform sides.

The Sd.Kfz.8 is a hell of a lot easier to research and there's a good 60+ photos of it around ( all the ones I'm aware of are in that link ). The Sd.Kfz.9 is harder to research and there's less than 20 photos of it around and none that are good clear shots of the working area.

Nice write up Dean mate but one thing every one seems to be missing about these two vehicles is that the SD.KFZ 8 is a 12 ton half track and the SD.KFZ 9 is a 18 ton half track ,,and there is a pretty good size difference between the two .
Best way to solve this issue is to build both

That's a common misconception but they are actually very similar in size. Both about the same height and width give or take a few inches. The Sd.Kfz.9 is a just a bit longer than the Sd.Kfz.8 though the chassis and track base is very similar in length. The 9 was really just a stronger, gruntier version of the 8 that could tow heavier loads.

Too bad we don't start 'till March. But, some of us just might get a nice Christmas present to build.

Hi all,

as the second half of 2013 is free of any campaign for me, i enlisted with a project i wanted to do last year but for which i did not have enough time.
I propose a 100% scratch built of the french Mistral launcher with his 2 servants:

Is that OK for you ?

Cheers

Ok, I'm in. Happy to provide reference photos of anything in the US Army Air Defense Artillery Museum collection too.

Not sure what I'm going to build just yet, but it will probably be either an M15 or M16 halftrack in 35th, although for giggles, I might do a scratchbuilt Chinese Type 63 conversion on a Dragon T34 hull...

March seems so far away. I know we can't cut parts off of sprue or start painting bits and pieces before then, but what about longingly looking into the box, perusing the instruction sheet, downloading photos of the real thing from the internet to see the details, 'pre-planning' how the build is going to go, and running our fingers over the parts trees while whispering "me prrecioussss"??

WHEEEW!!! Man, im glad to hear you say that Keith...I thought i might be the only one fondeling my kits and gazeing at them...yearning to sand and glue....OH, wait! I was thinking that out loud wasnt I?

I have aquired yet another AntiArcraft kit and now cant decide which to save for the build. Its Dragons 2cm Flakvierling 38 auf Selbstfahrlafette Sd.Kfz.7/1. Oh well...Plenty-O-time to figure it out.

We must have been seperated at birth for I do that all the time!

Maybe that's why I don't accel at painting as I rush through that stage just to get to building another kit?!!

I think it'll be worth the wait. There are so many Campaigns set to launch here in the coming months that March will be here before you know it.

Got a question. One of the projects I've been looking into doing is a scratchbuilt T3 105mm AA gun in 35th. It will be based on a heavily modified 120mm "Stratosphere gun" base from a kit that was built 30-40 years ago, but the major work will be mostly scratchbuilt. Is this acceptable?

The only T3 just arrived here at Ft. Sill yesterday morning from Aberdeen. I'd toyed with scratchbuilding an M2 90mm AA gun from this 120 chassis I've got, since it'll only need some minor modification in order to accurately represent the M2. However, the ordeal of getting the T3 here last week (it was damaged when the rig driver fell asleep and drove off the road) I want a model to commemorate the whole incident

I'll get some pics up later today, since they're all in my office.

I was just at the London (on) model contest and a bloke scratch the 18t with a flak 36 88. Did excellent work. To make his rivets he placed a drill in upside down and punched them out using for sale signs as the medium. Food for thought that is the vehicle that Lee Marvin rumbles away in, in the film 'Dirty Dozen'.

Glad to see the Trumpy Type 87 is going to be done. I think I might do a Wiesel 2 LeFlaSys Ozelot.

Here's the T3 105mm AA gun after last week's incident. It was damaged in transit from Aberdeen to Ft. Sill, but is repairable and will be on display shortly.

My intent is to take an old Renwal 120mm M1 "Stratosphere gun" and use it as a pattern to scratchbuild this gun. The Renwal kit is 1:40th scale, but measures out almost exactly to 1:35th for the M2 90mm and T3 105mm gun chassis (the 120 used a similar, but beefed up chassis).

I'll be using resin tires for the M26 Dragon Wagon, lots of sheet styrene, and the (heavily modified) legs from the Renwal kit. Here's a built-up 120mm for reference:
