Michael, looks killer.

One thing that raises concern to me, that I just noticed. I'm not real sure what that smaller tank is on the drivers fender, it could be LHS specific... But the larger square tank is the main hydraulic tank. It would have your primary hydraulic lines coming from it to the pump and so forth.

Now, I never worked on the LHS, so this could be vehicle specific.

Never mind me, I went and looked back at your post a few pages ago.

One other thing, are you going to add the slave recepticle?

Yeah! I have seen the connection from the oil tank to the power steering in the manual but have yet to find where/how the accessory system connects into it but I know it does.

The box behind the oil tank is the electro/hydraulic control box for controlling the LHS. Top two connectors are multi pin electrical lines for the LHS system control wiring. Below that are four pairs of in/out hydraulic lines that connect from the LHS cylinders to electric oil control solenoids inside the box. The two big vertical "things" hanging outside the box are high pressure oil disconnects for the main oil feed and the low pressure return.

I saw in the manual that you can disconnect the hydraulic system here and connect it to another entirely different vehicle in order to unload a container if the primary vehicle engine breaks down.

Yes, will definitely be adding the slave connector on the driver's side fender just below the air cleaner. The manual also indicated there is a slave connector on the other side of the truck hanging down below the battery box. I will be adding that as well.

On some vehicles there is a second small box under the air cleaner next to the slave connector. Any idea what this might be?

Looks like it is a battery disconnect switch. No idea why it would be needed as long as everything is hooked up correctly???

Battery disconnect switch box.

It's vital to have one. As long as you turn that switch off, you're almost certain to not have your batteries go dead on you from a slight drain or from leaving something on.

I didn't notice, but did your engine have a bottle for the ether start?

According to my references the ether start is the small bottle mounted on the side of the air cleaner.

As to the battery disconnect - seems strange to have it on the outside of the vehicle where other folks could mess with it. On the Sherman it is inside the vehicle and is this odd T handled double action switch that could never be thrown by accident. You have to pull it out, rotate 90 degrees, then push it back in.

But who am I to question Oshkosh designs?

Way cool rig here!

Hopefully now that there is a LHS model on the market in 1/35th we will be seeing a greater variety of containers coming forward.

Been putting this off as I don't really feel comfortable dealing with etch. But this morning I got started on the cab. If it comes out OK I think I will skip the idea of painting the cab interior green and the outside sand - instead paint the entire vehicle sand so the interior detail can be better seen.

(Caution with that glove box area - there are errors in the size of that one etch panel. You can work it out but it is also easy to mess it up.)

As to my earlier question about what models offer the self-recovery winch:

From what I can find, the winch is offered on the Italeri fuel tanker and by Trumpeter on their new HEMTT semi-tractor.

Dont forget the rollers on the frame for the winch cable. One is located between the winch and the rear frame. There is a roller at the rear of the frame.

I was thinking there are rollers going to the front also, so the winch can pull to the rear or to the front. Not sure about the front on a Hemtt tho...

Oh I am well aware of the three fairleads that would have to be constructed but I consider that the easy part. (I think there is a third one between the two front wheel sets.)

Here's a thought: I wish I had thought of it earlier, but I could have posed the battery case open and shown the four batteries inside.

Funny you say that, because the cover was missing on most of them.

If you use the recovery winch forward the cable floats just an inch or two above this plastic cover so any whipping of the cable at all, I guess probably rips the cover right off.

New drawing of the HEMTT winch that I recently found. Looks like it might have a two speed planetary gearbox* but not sure,

*Technically yes, a two speed gearbox but in this case I bet they are ratcheted gearboxes; a slow speed gearbox for haul in and a higher speed gearbox for play out.

Just in case you were wondering (as I did) what those odd looking brackets were on each interior cab door. Way different than WWII.
