Nice half track. I am working on the same kit, have not gotten very far with it, but seeing your pictures is getting me excited again. Time to finish off the Jagdpanter I am doing for fun and get back to some serious work.

Ok folks, we have been seeing some very interesting and good stuff here. Now to some bad, not interesting, purely problematic stuff (I am a masochist modeler after all).

The kit in question is the Alan 1/35 Flammpanzer II "Flammingo". I have been going at it since the beginning of the campaign, but did not take pictures till now as I wasn't sure I would have the strength and determination to complete it.

I received this kit from a friend, along with many warnings from him. Turns out he was right. Problems started as soon as I tried to put together two pieces. I don't want to criticize this kit to high heavens, however this is as bad as it gets. First of all, the plastic is horrible. It is a strange kind of plastic that is very elastic and soft. All of the pieces are a little warped. Furthermore, you can't sand the plastic properly, it just resists sanding paper or files. Now, that is a huge problem because none of the pieces fit, you have to sand them to correct size and shape. The bottom and the top of the body do not match. The wheel sides are also mismatched, all of the wheel halves are of a different diameter, it is crazy. The wheel hubs do not fit the parts where you attach them to the body. The stubs there are too large in diameter. Now, normally you would sand them, right? However, you can't sand this file/sanding paper resistant plastic. You have to cut them... Oh wait, the strange plastic just snaps when you apply pressure!

It took me a lot of patience, 3 scalpel blades and lots of time to just to get here...

The bottom and the top pieces now fit well. It took a lot of carving to get the pieces of the flamethrowers in place, but they are OK as well. The only problem, as you can see, is that several stubs on which the wheels fit are completely broken. This happened as I was trying to reduce their diameter by cutting and filing.

After repairing the wheels, I moved onto the turret. I didn't take many pics because most of the times I was too frustrated.

The turret came together well, until I tried to put the floor piece in place. Of course, as with all the main pieces in this kit, it was not in proportion. A little too large for its place.

This is after a few minutes. It still doesn't fit.

I was planning to keep the top hatch open and place the commander figure supplied with the kit. However, that is a huge hatch which leaves a big gap. Since there's no turret interior. I decided to close it.

Of course, before that I had thoughlessly glued on the stand on which the figure would stand. Off it came.

This is its current stage. Aaah, you see, the fun continues! The turret ring is too large for its place in the body, you can't fit the turret in!

Now, I'll have to fix that and move on to the tracks... which I will hate, because they are individual link type tracks. With the great fit(!) of everyting in this kit, I wonder if any two of the track links will fit together? Also, cleaning them will require patience, as there are many links, but they cannot be sanded or filed.

At any second, I might throw this kit away and build my DML Sdkfz 251/16 Flammpanzer. With the time and work spent on this Alan kit, I could have built three of those DML kits...

Here's my completed entry for this campaign.
It's a Vietnam War era M132 called 'Burn Baby Burn'
The basis of the kit is the Academy M113A1 with the old Verlinden resin M132 coupla.
There are quiet a few firsts on this model for me,
It's the first model I have made in about 10 years,
It's the first time I have used PE (Eduard),
It's the first time i have used individual tracks (Friulmodel),
It's the first time I have ever photographed my model.
I know there is great room for improvement but I am very happy with how this turned out considering the number of firsts with it.
Any ideas or comments on improving my work are always welcome.
David

Great work David, you turned out a good model eventhough you had several "firsts".

Anybody need any extensions? This is the last week of our campaign, with only 5 days to go.

Emre -

If extensions are okay, I'd love another week to 10 days past the deadline...Had a job change last week that interrupted my painting (base coat finished ready for the camo pattern) of my Sd.Kfz. 251/16 Ausf. D...set me back a little. Won't be all done, but maybe can get it put together minus the weathering...

Don't know if anyone else is in need of an extension as well...but I'd appreciate the extra time!

Either way, it's all good! Cheers!

We might have an extension up to two weeks, if anyone else is interested... Though I made fast progress on my own kit now my compressor's repaired and I am enable to paint, I may need an extension myself

Two weeks good enough for you Tim?

Hey everyone! I hope your builds are going great and nearing completion! I finished mine (besides the groundwork) and am having lots of trouble downloading the pictures. I get the "out of room" error, and can't figure out how to delete some of my old workbench photos to free up space. Can anyone help me? ....I'm obviously in need of it

Hi Steve!

I'll try to guide you. Click on the PHOTOS icon, which will take you to the Kitmaker Network photos site. Once there, on the upper left, click on "My Photos". You will see all of you photos together in a gallery. Click on the photo you want to delete, it will open up. When it does, there are tiny icons beneath the photo, when you move your cursor over them, you can see their purpose. Choose "Edit Photo", it looks like photoframe with a yellow thing on it. The option to delete your photo is on the Editing Page. Hope it helps.

OK, I want to congradulate Alanger for producing the strangest decals I have ever seen. First, they refused to be separated from their decal paper, forcing them resulted in only breaking the thin decals. When I waited, the decals just disintigrated! Now I am without any decals to apply.

I'll either call it a day and leave my Flammpanzer II as it is or try to find some suitable reference pics and try to come up with decals...

No more "questionable" model firms after this... I'm sticking by the larger firms like Dragon, Tamiya, AFV Club and Italeri after this experience...

Thanks Emre!

I managed to delete quite a few of my old pics...but I can't even download one now. It should fit (I'm not totally computer illiterate)...but I'm getting a 'fatal' error when I try to upload.

Could I e-mail you one picture to post? or, should I contact the Tech support? I don't want to miss the deadline. Thanks again!

Hi Emre, I am also getting really tired of sh**ty decals! After the Academy decals on my Hummer ambulance I have also decide to stick with the good companies, just like you have decided.
I have just bought the Militaria book on Flamm panzers. There are some good pictures and some colour schemes. Do you want me to send these to you? I will be able to do it over the weekend. Maybe I even have some spares I can send you if your own stock of crosses and numbers is limited.

Jesper, that would really be wonderful! I couldn't find proper pictures so I don't know what to use.

Steve, e-mail your pictures to me and I'll try uploading them for you. If that doesn't work, we will try getting tech help.

Joe, your pictures still show as red Xs. Maybe there's a general problem with kitmaker?

From what i´ve read and experienced here on Armorama ( Kitmaker) is that the photo "department" i.e the album bit and when uploading / linking photos has always had it´s problems. I had the same problems myself untill i switched to this:

www.photobucket.com

Great for uploading your pics/ resizing, sharing etc ( the standard stuff) but it´s also VERY reliable and i haven't had any problems what so ever when it comes to the dreaded red X when linking etc.
Anyhow, i was planing on getting some stuff from Alanger but this has made me to seriously reconsider, looks like its Dragon, Italieri etc. all the way for me!
Thanks for the heads up Emre. Hope everything works out for ya.

hey,
Steve-o I'll get the same problem, when I try to add more than one pic at a time, did it to me when I tried to add all three of my Flame Hetzer's ,so I added them one at a time, and worked fine that way.
