Italeri Mercedes 3000 L Conversion to "Werkstattkraftwagen"
Because I always wanted to do a German truck and am working on a nice
diorama anyway, it all came at the right moment. I did not want to make the
standard version of the model, however, but an adapted one so that I can be
a little proud of myself again. Now for this type of job they used Krupp
Protzes in the German Army, but I wanted something completely different. A
closed truck that was used for small repairs but could be deployed in bomb
disposal service at the same time.
I buy books from people at the Twenot site often and in one of the books I
recently bought was a nice model with drawings and measurements. So I was
off to the hobby shop and bought the truck and two thicknesses of styrene
sheet.
Back home I of course cleaned the sprues in luke-warm soapy water and let
them air-dry. While this was drying, I studied the instructions and looking
at the parts it should not really present any problems. Not too much flash,
no, just a nice model for a decent price.
Now it was time to start building. As always I started with item #1,
assembling the interior of the cabin, consisting of 5 parts. First a dry fit
and then to work with knife and glue. This is where the first modification
was made, because I thought the seats looked too neat, so I took my Dremel
out and treated the back and bottom of the seats to make them look worn.
After that I covered the seat with some toilet paper to get a better
appearance. The seat was painted brown, washed and drybrushed, and then it
was done. The rest of the interior didn’t need any work, except some
paintwork. Copyright ©2002 - Text and
