Looking to do the 1/35 tam challenger II (desertised) just wondering if anyone makes a metal barrel for it? there are plenty of 120mm for the abrams but none riffled for the challenger.

also, are there any a/m tracks for the tam kit? i know there are some for the trump kit. or are the tamiya kit ones ok?

thanks,

Richard

Most of the supplied tracks from tamiya will do just fine... For the metal barrel thing, i'm not too sure...

Accurate Armour out of Scotland is the place to find modern British accessories, and lots of other items. They have a Challenger II track and sprocket set. AA also has lots of other Chally II upgrade/conversion sets too. Lionmark makes a Chally II replacement barrel.

There is very little of the tracks visible once the side skirts and and canvas dust covers are in place. Personally I'd save on the replacement track and get the etch update set.

I agree with Max about the tracks. The kit supplied tracks are nice, but even if they weren't you can't see 'em in the version deployed in Iraq with the skirts.

The Barrel is fine and the one thing that would justify replacement is the track. Challenger 1 replacement tracks are not the same as the tracks for Challenger 2. I got 2x sets of the C2 track (individual link - which need 3 end connectors per link to be assembled - and take a long time to do). The manufacturer is Armour Track Models and the part no. is TK-13. I sourced them from Lou Stenner Models in the UK.

Sorry but I disagree. The one piece tracks that are included in the Tamiya kit are some of the best I've seen. I too have the Armour Track set (which I think is now OOP) and when you compare the two, the extra cost isn't worth it in my opinion, especially considering very little of the track runs are visible. For the main gun I'd go with Lion Marc.

thanks for all the replies guys. i wont bother with the tracks then but i think i will get the barrel, i will wait and see if i think the kit one is good enough.

as for detail sets, which is better, the eduard one, or the voyager one? iv heard the voyager one has the most accurate grills, but it seams each set has bits that the other dosnt.

If you email Accurate armour and ask them for just a chally 2 barrel, they will price one for you. I have done this before. They are great people to work with, you might want to try it.

How much detail versus cost are you willing to decide upon?
When you look closely at the fully laden Challenger 2, as it went into Iraq, it is fairly well festooned with different items, including the Orange recce panel.
The Tamiya photo etch should be enough, along with a Lion Mark barrel.
I agree about the tracks, not enough is showing to justify the cost of after market ones.

really? i read somewhere that the grills in the tamiya p/e set are inacurate. Is this the case or not? i dont mind paying for the eduard or voyager sets. or if needs be both (my birthday next week lol)

The Voyager grills are the incorrect ones. Tamiya is correct.
The Voyager ones have the bar in the middle of the screen included, which is incorrect. The bar is under the screen.

Sorry for the delay, working yesterday !

Nothing wrong with the Tamiya set and it looks good. I used them on mine and added the Lion Mark barrel

I know of no replacement barrels for this kit. The tracks are ok, but they do tend to go brittle over time, especially if painted with enamels.

well the kit and p/e should be here soon.

I was going to get a spray can of tamiya desert yellow but iv heard that is wrong.

would it be better if mixed some tamiya desert yellow into tamiya buff?

thanks,

Richard

Copied again from a thread of March last year:

Pasted in from a thread back in December......

The British Army changed its desert colour completely between Op Granby (1991) and Telic (2003).

The MM Gulf Armor Stone colour represents the 1991 shade, not the vivid yellow of 2003 (of course there were a wide variety of 'sand' shades on other vehicles as always). The Osprey Modelling book on the Challenger suggests the following mixes using Tamiya paints

Op Granby (1991) XF59 x 4 + XF57 x 1 + XF19 x 1

Op Telic (2003) XF60 x 3 + XF3 x 1

David

IIRC Xtracolour do the Op Granby colour too.

You might consider getting a compllete decal sheet from fe Echelon or Bison. The Tamiya decals are rather sparse.
