A few weeks ago, here, on Armorama (and across the Network), many site-users were getting bombarded with Spam from a Swiss site by the name of 'Swapey'

Now it seems as if they've started again with letters such as this - You have been warned!

Hi there, I have noticed that you are an active member of a modelling community. My name is Roger Gaemperle and I am working on a Master Thesis about community building on the web for the Technical University ETH in Zurich, Switzerland at the institute for technology and innovation management (www.time.ethz.ch). Since I am a modeller (and collector of aircraft memorabilia) myself I dedicate a full chapter to the community of modellers. My work is sponsored by swapey www.swapey.com/modelling which is a new virtual showcase for collectors and modellers. In order to better understand the needs of modellers and how to support community building in general I have started a survey at the following forum:
If you are interested in your personal showcase you can find an example here. Among the participants the university sponsors a gift coupon for a model (max. cost incl. shipping $100). In order that the coupon can be delivered we kindly ask you to register yourself at swapey. I do hope that you are not annoyed by the direct way of contacting you. I need the support of as many modellers as possible to have statistically significant statements from the survey. Please also excuse my English, I was born in Switzerland and my mother tongue is not English. I would be very grateful if you would support my work. Best regards Roger Gaemperle

Now, I don't know exactly what the game (or the ethics) of this lot are, suffice to say, despite their denials they are spam merchants.

So any mail from [email protected] is well worth binning...

Also, if you get one, it's worth while complaining to the University mentioned and saying their name is getting used in connection with some doubtful scheme I doubt if they'll be too amused...

I just received one which is posted below. I'm curious what part of what you all warned him about is he not understanding?!?

Hi there,

I have noticed that you are an active member of a modelling community.

In order to better understand the needs of modellers and how to support community building in general I have started a survey at the following forum: http://www.swapey.com/index.aspx?nav=forum&tid=2ecca2c2-4849-416b-b7eb-402e8d7486b5&cat=9c16fb80-b863-44d1-aec0-d1700806a171&sub=0

If you are interested in your personal showcase you can find an example here:

I don’t have a problem with what they are trying to do as regards a website. I do have a problem with the methods they are employing to try and attract members, my other doubt is this $100 lark, I seem to recall that they are giving a $100 prise a month for a competition (I may be wrong) and now $100 for supporting his work!! I find it hard to believe that a university has $1300 burning a hole in there pocket and thus is willing to throw it at a student as a prize for people supporting his work. That aside I do hope that if genuine it is a success just stop sending the bloody SPAM.

Exactly as I was feeling before - until 'Wave # 2' started...

If anyone hasn't read it here's Roger Gaemperle's denial that they were spamming:

Quoted Text

Hi Jim

Quoted Text
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Point # 1, people whose addresses don't even figure on the lists were getting e-mails.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are other modelling websites and modellers with private homepages who we contacted, armorama is not the only place for modellers in the WWW. The feedback we received was very positive. Most people seem to like the concept and many registered and there are new models added to the swapey museum on a daily basis. Again, there is no commercial intention behind, we are a group of modellers and collectors who wanted to create something useful for people who share our passion.

Quoted Text
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Point # 2, by what right did you feel you could send UNSOLICITED e-mails to ANY registered user of this site? Not one of the many advertisers this site has resorted to these highly questionable tactics.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We did not, only to a fraction of the people who are registered here (perhaps 100 out of 40'000 or about 0.25%).

Quoted Text
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Point # 3, Spamming doesn't just 'happen' - any system has to have a Spambot working within it to 'harvest' e-mail addresses.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We didn't have any "spamming" intention. The e-mail addresses were made public by some members on this page https://armorama.kitmaker.net/modules.php?op=modload&name=Members_List&file=index&letter=U&sortby=uname&ccode=
(by the way, they still are) and we just clicked on an individual's name to write an e-mail, just as anybody else could do. So, no Spambot. We assumed that people who made their address public by themselves wouldn't mind if they get some information about an enthusiastic and completely free project that can do no harm.

Quoted Text
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Point # 4, Multiple e-mails WERE getting sent to individuals. Here's an example:

Quoted Text
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
i think i have the record from them.i got a total of 68 in one day, then they flooded my e-mail account with hundreds.it took over and hour to delete them all.and i have not be able to stop it.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We didn't do that, I - again - give you my word. If it happened for any reason (I can't think of any explanation) it was 100% not our intention. What would we have wanted to achieve by sending 68 e-mails to one individual? It is obvious that someone who receives so many e-mails would be more than annoyed and would never visit swapey.

Meanwhile, many interesting models including tanks have been added to the swapey showcase. In addition to the mini-forums attached to each model (at the bottom) we will soon add a general forum where people can discuss general topics.

Again, my apologies if anybody was annoyed by our direct way of contacting modellers. The last thing we want is to annoy modellers since then all our effort and free time we put into swapey would be in vain. We are modellers & collectors ourselves and swapey is completely free of any charge or advertisement.

All the best
Roger

Add the missus and I to the list this time.

I generally expect to receive a fair amount of spam considering that my Kitmaker address is listed publicly, but I resent the fact that it was abused by the Swapey people in this manner and that they have somehow trawled Kitmaker for the addresses, both listed and unlisted. Don't try to tell me that the private addresses weren't spammed: my wife is a member here with an unlisted email address and she also received one of these enticing offers.

I would have been all too happy to help Roger, as I am to help all students and members of this site, with his thesis and participate in his survey had, once again, the request not come in this spamming method.

Yes, I got this one in my inbox today too. I am not happy.
However, the method they are now using PROVES that they know that what they are doing is wrong and unethical and that Roger is lying in his resonse to Jim!
1) There is no thesis being written. This becomes obvious when you read the "survey".
2) The university is not giving away anything. You are registering with Swapey, not the university. They have no way of seperating you from other Swapey members.
3) This email is designed to make you register at Swapey and nothing else, yet the word "Swapey" appears nowhere in the email.
If they felt that what they are doing is fair and acceptable they would not be hiding behind a fictional request to aid a fellow modeler. Since this IS what they are doing, this email is proof that they are knowingly doing something wrong. It is also proof that Roger is a liar.
This email is unsolicited, untruthful, and unethical. Thanks to Roger and this email, I not only will NEVER join this website, I will proactively campaign and warn everyone I can to avoid and condemn Swapey! (Insert smiley giving one fingered salute here.)
Being that I've been in this hobby 40 years, I run the largest AMPS regional on the planet, and I know just about everybody, this is not a cry in the wilderness.
The heck with the spineless, clawless sock puppets! Make Armorama a Swapey-free zone!

I never read the original thread, as I had no intentions of signing up to any new sites or the likes, as I simply don´t have the time. But I also got the "welcome" mail today and the offer of $100. Any further mails will go directly to the spam bin.
But its not all bad ... I won two different lotteries in the UK, one in Ireland and one Euro lottery. I also had several very lucrative offers, of large cash transfers from Africa.

UPDATE; Just checked my private e-mail address that is not used for modelling related activities and not registered on Armorama, and have the same mail there as well.

Got me one too today, but I never got the first one either. Maybe they purposely left people off of the first mailing in order to hit them with the second one. Maybe we're now in some sort of spamming rotation.

I got one today, too. Since the e-mail says English is not his mother tongue, perhaps someone could tell him to knock it off in his mother tongue. I get enough junk e-mails about my long lost relatives in Niger leaving me money, and from royalty wanting to give me "found money" as it is. Swapey now wants to give me a coupon for a model to sign up with them? Must be my dazzling smile or something that makes people want to give lil' ol' me all these wonderful things...

Maybe SWAPEY needs to change the name to SWAMPY and the SWAMP SITE!
