EDIT!!!! The dio I start here got ditched because I didn't like it. Started a new one on page 2 with the same figures and tank!

Hey guys. Im new to modelling. I started about a month ago building a Tiger I (the one on pic 1). I've always been interested in ww2 so I thought I would give modelling a try.
With my "practise" Tiger done, I thought I would try to build a dio. And why not do a builders log too? I will probably do plenty of mistakes for you guys to correct, and help me learn.

But onto the project.
The dio will be set in Normandy in the countryside.
A panzer (not the Tiger, I will build a pz. kpfw. V Panther Ausf. D for this dio) is stopped due to a destroyed bridge.
Nearby is a field with a little shack. While the tank crew is taking a break and figuring out a new way to go (I've got figures with tank crew taking break and looking at maps) the farmer is approaching the tank crew with some bottles/food etc.(I still need a farmer figure) He is not trying to be nice to the crew. He just don't want them to approach his shack. Behind it will French resistance (if I can find proper figures) hide. That's pretty much the scene I will try to capture.

#1Diorama build 001/image.file" BORDER="0">

I've started working on the shack. First I made the window and door out of wood.
Then I made a window out of some transparent plastic from a cookie package. The curtains I made out of tissue paper.
#1Diorama build 002/image.file" BORDER="0">

Then I cut out and glued on some cardboard for the bricks and filled the gaps with pollyfilla.
#1Diorama build 004/image.file" BORDER="0">

Hope you will check out a beginners progress through his first diorama and second kit build.
Im open to constructive critisism and help. And if somebody know where I can buy a farmer figure (capable of holding a box of food/bottles if possible) and some french resistance figures, let me know. I've only been able to find the Marguis french resistance set, and it doesn't fit my dio :/

That's it for now.

Greetings,

I'm almost a 60 year old and I'm still learning, beleive me, you never stop learning in this hobby.
Figures are everywhere, from DML to Master Box and Miniart, and many are civilians, even a farmers cart complete with the farmer and daughter with many detail possibilities.
I suggest you check out the websites for those 3 manufacturers.

When you have a minute take a look at the photos I have posted under "Two Types of Dioramas"

Good start,

Hey John. I bet you're right. There is so much to learn. I've been reading ALOT about washes, pigments, resin, photo etch, putty etc etc for the last few weeks. So many possibilities : D
I will check out those manufacturers tomorrow. It's midnight here now : D and gotta go to work tomorrow.
But I will just check out your "two types of diorama" before I go to sleep.

Thx : )

Had some time to work on the dio this weekend.

Worked on the shack walls a bit. added second layer of "cement" or whatever they used. added cracks and painted / weathered the walls a little.

#1Diorama build 003

#1Diorama build 004

Also made a little stove pipe out of a Tiger I turret. The rain blocker is made from the top of a nail. I will paint the pipe in a rusty look later.

#1Diorama build 006

I am experimenting how I should make the corrugated sheet iron on the roof. The finish result will be rusty, weathered etc ofc ( :
The roof I've started on the left part of the shack, which has no plates will end up being a little roof covering for a pile of firewood.

#1Diorama build 008

Also made a little progress on the Panther. Assembled 90%. Made a little damage on the fenders etc.

#1Diorama build 010

It came with a little photo etch. Added a little battle damage to one of the grills.

Sorry for my horrible english. It's hard for me with technical terms. And had no time today to look up words.

Please share your thoughts, ideas and help

I'm really liking how this is looking as an idea, and how well you are progressing. A lot of Norman buildings do not have the regular blockwork, as per yours, but have irregular blocks set in a kind of mud/cement binder. There is a word for it, but i can't recall what it is. I'll have a look at my references and see if i can locate any photos of what i mean. But please keep up the good work, love the timbered sections.

Do not apologise for your English, it's way better than most peoples Danish!!

Promising start Simon.
I´d try to reduce the overall size ... its better to have it bit more compact and detail rich, rather than big and empty. You´ll be glad in time, when you have more of these ... storage will start being a problem.
You should also go over your figures and clean away and mould lines on the figures. These lines get highlighted when painted.
Keep up the good work.

You are right. But im pretty sure I spotted a little shack on my resent trip to normandy build in random colored bricks. (It was from the war). But you are right that most were build in the way you reference. But would be awesome if you could find some reference^^

Hey im already planning on making it alot smaller. It will look stupid with all the action in the foreground and just the field and shack in back. Also im gonna change the story a little bit.
I will work on the figures later, when starting the paintjob ^^ thx for the advice

Looking nice! One of these days I'll start my first diorama, and will look back here for inspiration!

Good stuff! I particularly like the stucco or concrete effect on the shack. Really convincing.

Can't wait to see what you have in mind for your first dio.

Yo Simon,

What a start with modelling! And wath a huge diorama to start with, as Frank say...dont go to big! Make sure you make always a moke up or drawing of wath you gonna build. That will help a lot..believe me.

Still, your intensions are good and sure for a beginner.

I will following this one.

Keep up!

Hi. You might want to take a virtual car trip, thanks to Google Earth, of Normandy and drive along some of the routes that have been filmed. Sure, it's 60 odd years later, but most of the countryside buildings are the original, and some showing repaired war damage. The main roads are now neatly surfaced, but if you ignore that you can get a good idea of what the land looks like, typical Norman buildings and farm lots, hedgerows and country lanes ,etc. Unfortunately you can't 'drive' down any hegderow lined lanes where most of the fighting took place because the Google Earth vehicle didn't go there either. But it is an excellent source of the topography and architecture of the region.

Hi Simon,
Masterbox make a set of French partisans that are pretty nice. Esci have an ancient set of partisans that you can get on e-Bay every so often. The newer Tamiya Churchill tank has a Farmer figure that will fit your needs perfectly. He is posed offering a bottle of wine to the British tank crew...but could just as easily be used for a gGerman tank crew.

Your dio looks promising. Keep up the good work.

Hey Jeff... thanks!.. I should have known about the churchill farmer figure before though :o I already changed the storyline a bit because I couldn't find a decent farmer. But thanks anyway^^
I bought the MIG Russian old mand (who will be a french old man in my dio xD).
The panther crew will take a break (one smoking his pipe, the rest talking, one looking at a map were to go because bridge is destroyed).
Then I have bought these german inf http://www.modelhobbies.co.uk/shop/images/military35b/ALG35245.jpg who will be having a conversation with the old man, also were to go. the MG and shovel guy will be walking behind the tank or just standing around.
Behind a stonewall these american soildiers will be hiding http://www.modelhobbies.co.uk/shop/images/images090410/DN6211.jpg
I will probably only use the guys crouching and the one with the BAR.

Hey. Time for a little update. Im kinda busy at work atm so the progress is a little slow. But here are some pics.

I've cut the dio base a lot. It was way too big. But it's probably hard to see on the pic.
Also I've started putting on polyfilla for basic groundwork. The ditch will not be as deep as in the pic. But I made it big enough so I will have some space to work with the polyfilla, dirt, mud, water etc.
1

Also started making this little outdoor toilet.
diorama 002

Everything made out of aluminum pan and wire. I just stomped out some holes with a needle to simulate bolts on the hinges.
diorama 006

Still need some paint and rust.
diorama 008

diorama 010

Painted the rest of the timber and added rust to the roof.
diorama 011

The glue is still visible some places under the roof if you look carefully from certain angles. Will fix that.
diorama 012

diorama 013

Also started some figures. This is my first time painting figures. It's so hard These are not done obviously. Just a little sneek peek lol

hey thanan. Don't know when I will be finished... got a lot work atm : ( But the actual diorama won't take so long I think. The thing that will take long will probably be painting all figures and tank : o
I purchased an airbrush + compressor, but can't use it yet, cause I ordered it from Britain, so im waiting to get a adapter with the mail so I can plug it in.
Thx for watching ^^
