I am doing an F for the What if campaign and if you are doing a Jagdpanther ,maybe I'll do a King Tiger.Need to go enlist.I built panthers as a kid,and a panther was my first build when I came back to modeling last winter, another one won't hurt.

Darren,i'm in!read the rules and it seems that almost anything that starts with a P will work .This makes my kit choice a little tougher. But I"m. still leaning towards a Tiger.

The imprtant part for me is that the vehicle utilises the Panther chassis. I do not mind if someone wishes to build a Berge Panther, one of the anti aircraft mounts that were fitted to the Panther hull (either in fact or only on paper). I have even see a Panther chassis fitted with a Panzer IV turret. all of the dedicated Panther and Jagdpanther vehicles are of course valid, if in doubt ask.

Matt a Panzer III or IV is no good for this campaign as it has to be a Panther based vehicle.

Paul as you have started the mentioned kit why not keep people updated using this thread, it may be of help to others considering building the kit you have for the campaign.

Hi Darren,

If people are interested, I can post the progress as I build the beast. I have finished assembling the road wheels and lower hull, which has been painted ready for detailing. I have built one run of the Friulmodel tracks and can show the building of the other run, they are superb items and well worth investing in. Perhaps those1/35 Panther experts out there can keep me on the straight and narrow as I am a Braille scale modeller normally.

All the best,

Paul

I'm signed in and seeing that this campaign is quit a ways away from starting I for one would be interesting in checking on your progress as it would be helpful for me as I don't know a thing about these machines, hummm . . . well Paul, how about it? Lets see some Panther.

Gary, I just new you would come through with your magic!

I've given this some thought, and I'll be building the DML Ersatz M10 for this Campaign.

A Panther in Olive Drab, you've got to love that

Cheers

Welcome to the campaign Tom.

Paul I have that kit and it is one of DMLs better kits in terms of instructions, and I look forward to your build.

Darren,I have been doing alot of research trying to find out the difference between a Panzer and a Panther.I am still a newb at this so be kind I have been trying to find a somewhat easy way to tell them apart, other than the spelling. This is what I came up with,Panzer=small roadwheels and Panther(if it is not a Tiger)= large roadwheels. Is this basically right?Once again pardon my newbness. Thanks Jeff

Panzer actually means armor. We tend to use Panzer as a shortening of Panzerkampfwagen which means tank (literally armored battle wagon). All tanks are Panzers. The Panther happens to be Panzer V (Roman numeral 5). The Tiger is Panzer VI. The names might have been for propaganda value or maybe to help distinguish equipment once there were so many different types later in the war.

Hi Jeff,

"Panzer" is German for "armour", so applies to any tank. The first four accepted types were simply called "Panzer I, Panzer II, Panzer III, Panzer IV", and are generally small and boxy (with smaller wheels) compared to the later tanks. Then came the Tiger, technically called "Panzer VI" - the Tiger I was a large boxy tank with big overlapping road wheels and the dreaded 88mm cannon. The later Tiger II had sloping armour and was the largest "gun tank" fielded by the Germans before the war ended.

The Panther was "Panzer V", and is all sloping armour and big overlapping road wheels too, but is a bit smaller than the Tiger II. It effectively was a replacement for the Panzer IV as the "standard" tank for the army late in the war. Pretty much all the kits I've ever seen of Panthers will have the word "Panther" somewhere in the title, even if it is "BergePanther" (recovery vehicle based on Panther chassis).

Hope this helps!

Tom

So,if I look for anything that is a Panzer V,,Panther, or has large roadwheels, not including the tigers, I should be O.K.?

Pretty much. Panthers look like this:

(Although, usually without the burnt-out effect... )
