Hi!
I see good details, and I like the work that you're doing....my polish T-55a is still a wip from a year or so....I've added only few things but in these days I'll try to go on with it....
You can get some details in this blog:
https://armorama.kitmaker.net/forums/166379
If I can help you in some way let me know.
Please, keep in mind that my Northern alliance T-55 is incorrect,it has some innaccurancies that I've fixed over the polish t-55...that it's however another version(production) of the T-55.
You need to add:
1)Exhaust hole at the bottom of the lower edge, under the mount for the
head(search)light.
2)connectors for the fuel lines
3)rework the tow hooks, the ones in tamiya kit are incorrect, they need to be more "high"
Please don't get these observations as a negative critics, you're doing a good work and I see the casting number under the tank so I assume that the accurancy is your goal...and with this in mind I try to help you.No intention to get dowm your topic or model.
I hope to see more updates...and feel free to contact me if you need something or some extra bits for your tank!
Regards
Ciro

Thanks for the comments everyone.
@Dave: see you in February. The Atlanta Club should hopefully have quite a few T-55's by then!
@Ciro: Thanks for the photos and link. I ignored the tow hook inaccuracy. I'll see what I can come up with for the fuel line connectors. As far as the exhaust hole, I've seen that, but I'm not exactly sure how to get a very neatly rectangular hole in that area without making it look bad, so for now, I've ignored it. With the wading rail, do you have any more photos of the sides? That looks like something I could potentially add without too much issue.
I'm excited about getting some paint on this guy.

One more thing...
What are people's thoughts on the base color vs. camo color of the picture at the top?? Is the darker green the base or the camo color? Looking at the bottom of the idler wheel boss, it seems the lighter color might be the base. Then again, it seems the darker color is around all of the things on the tank that would require a bit more care when it comes to masking.
Thoughts?
Fantastic so far
My humble opinion, the Dark Green is a base colour, and then a cloud pattern has been quickly applied over the top, the light colour you see on the underside of the front idlers is not in my opinion paint, its dried mud and dirt.
I also think to do the picture justice, accuracy should be thrown out the window, and the shade of Green used should be very dark, maintaining a fairly stark contrast between the base colour and the camo.
Fantastic picture of a T-55, still one of my fav piccy's,

The Exhaust Vent Hole can be done by simply drilling 2 small holes and then joining those 2 holes with a very sharp knife, the ends can be left a little rounded as some T-55's seem to have slightly rounded ends to the vent hole, and others seem to have a rectangular hole.
If you want rectangular as in the picture Ciro posted (Czech Version), then square off with a sharp blade tip.

The Northern Alliance T-55 at the top of the topic is a Soviet T-55 production so it has a solid green base over the red primer.
That said, the green base changes his shade for various reasons...
light at the time of photo, climatic condition, type of paint, colour of paint ,age, manteinance, type of camera, and so on.....
Afghan forces repainted it (the tank in the photo)and they did this type of camo, sometimes it was obtained with the application of the blu/grey stripes and sometimes it has even a new layer of green.
If you see tanks that are in the afghan teathre you can see all type green shades. You can also see other types of camo and the original camouflage of the local warlords.
Now you need to think wich is the best way to obtain what you see in the photo.
IMHO it's not so necessary to get a FS colour of or a precise application of colours. You need to get that look.
Just my two cents.

At least to me, it seems like a definitely different green on the inside of the loader's hatch. I'm taking that as the original soviet green. From there, they painted the other colors. At least that's my current interpretation.
I've found a couple other photos with this paint job, and they're much sunnier conditions. This photo really changes the hues of the colors into much 'greyer' colors. They seem quite vivid in the other photos, especially the lighter color which is much more green. I'll think I'll be attempting something in between the two. I'll post a few pictures tonight if I get a chance.

In Ciro's photo of the engine deck, it appears to be Tamiya dark green 2 or MM dark green. I am sure that Afghani forces used whatever green paint they had available. I've been preaching "available paint" for some time. We are too set on FS colors. Most militaries used whatever shade of paint they had available, at the time. Of course, your washes and filters are going to affect the top coat anyway. Pick a dark green you like the looks of and go from there.

I'm not interested in the exact colors and FS numbers. However, what I'm saying is that in photos of the tank I'm modeling, the lighting is throwing off the colors quite a bit and I plan on taking that into account as far as my own color mixes.

You are exactly right, the lighting, or to be exact the lack of lighting, due to it being a very overcast day is throwing off the colours, and its that one single feature that makes that photo such a fantastic picture.
The contrast between light and dark, made even stronger by the snow drift on the fender is what makes it a perfect subject.
Accuracy is not important now, FS numbers are pointless, the hunt is on for that gray overcast day.
Replicate the day, not some colour chart nonsense that has no meaning or bearing in any way to that T-55 resting in its grave.

Thanks Matt. Of course, I'm modeling mine to be near it's end... not actually sitting in it's grave... yet.
Tamiya Black Green lightened with Field Grey is my thought on the dark color. The lighter color, I may push it slightly more green than the photo. One of the lighter neutral greys, probably a little field grey, and then a touch of yellow-green or something to brighten it up.
Of course, the landscape also dictates a pretty heavy layer of caked on dirt and dust.
