I was worried for a while there, Joe. But you pulled it off. Outstanding work.

Hi fellas,
Thanks for your comments.
As I've mentioned already, I am in the process of making a small base for it to sit on just to set it off nicely.

Roy, I will be going for that green hornet next! I was thinking of running a build log for it only this time showing each step of the actual build as opposed to just showing the built model pre-painting as in this log.

Al, as far as I understand it everything was painted pink; sometimes even the tyres!

Keith, sorry you dont like the tats, mate (but thanks for your comments on the overall build!) & Rob, I'm glad you do like them!

Joe.

Joe, I didn't say I didn't like them.
The point I was trying to share was the accuracy issue.

You have done exceptional and sterling work with your details and research on the vehicle and its contents and in my humble opinion not matched that by using the size and quantity of the tattoo's placed on your crew members that you would not have found in the reality of the time period.

During the time the Rover 'Pinky was in operation, tattoo's were tolerated but quite restricted within the British military, with a little more leeway given to members of the Royal Navy.

Exceptions were not given to the SAS as they were drawn from volunteers within the Army and in the majority of cases they (members) went back to their former units after a period of service with the SAS.

MoD (Ministry of Defence) regulations back then disallowed any form of tattooing where they could be seen or were visible when in uniform (backs of hands, legs, necks etc.) especially when wearing shirt sleeve order.

Of course some were overlooked if they were in place before joining up but still, even they were and are viewed with a very critical eye by the recruiting NCO's and Officers.

Today it is becoming strict once more >

Her Majesty’s Armed Forces Army Application Guidance Notes:
3.12 Tattoos
Any tattoos that are offensive, obscene or excessive in size or number may be a bar to entry, re-entry or service extension.
Tattoos which are visible on the head, neck and hand may be a bar to entry depending on their size and nature. If you have tattoos you may be asked to complete a form describing them. The tattoos will be seen during your medical examination.
(This article appeared in Soldier magazine August 2013.)

I am NOT being critical of your build quality and crew, which is amazing, just trying to maintain the accuracy that you imparted on the vehicle and in my eyes would be complimented by the accuracy of the crew...

Keith,
I know you're not being critical, mate. In fact, you've added some very important & fascinating information while this thread has been running.
I've never been in the Forces so my knowledge is limited. I just felt that there was a lot of 'skin' showing & wanted to break it up a little. I used a bit of artistic licence when building the figures.
Your knowledge of military forces is wide & deep so I would like to pick your brains on my next Land Rover build where I'm going to turn the Tamiya SAS Land Rover Pink Panther into a 'green hornet' on operations in Northern Ireland in the late '70's & early '80's.
I have taken on board everything you have said & kind of agree with you so please follow my next thread.
Anyway, talk soon, buddy.

Joe.
Having been in NI a few times both on Ferret's in Belfast and out in the countryside of Augher and Clogher, (late 69 and early 70) and in Land Rovers and on foot in and around Dungannon, Coalisland and the 'Washing Bay' areas, (1977/78), I can tell you they were interesting times.

Having delivered and picked up some 'quiet and very differently armed' chaps early hours of the mornings I can tell you they say very little....

The Land Rover's in my opinion were very poorly armoured and even back then I felt very exposed, even with one of my crew sitting in an over stuffed arm chair in the back, armed with his GPMG and plenty of 7.62mm ammo.

I look forward to following along with your Green Hornet.

Hi Joe,

Excellent work and a fine display on a simple but effective base. I don't have an issue with the tattoos, they were very common above the elbow on anyone who had served in the Far East. Some folks got into trouble for having them on the forearm but they just got a bollocking and soldier on. "To drunk to remember Sir"

Lovely detail on the vehicle and figures, extremely well done, the additional kit fills things up very nicely. You did a cracking job on this one.

Well done.

Hi Joe. The addition of all the extra details really gives this model some clout. I like how you placed the model back on the base, to show the desert "size". I have a few of these blackdog sets, and they are becoming a favourite of mines. If I was add one critic, it would be for the figures. When you paint three figures like this, and they are all showing so much flesh, you should paint them indiviually, so they have slightly diffrent skin tones. Probably not a huge issue, but varying the skin tones would have have added so much more .... in my opinion. The extra effort was well worth it. You got a model to be proud of.

I really appreciate all your messages. Thanks!

Frank, I checked out the model today, to have a look at the figures, paying attention to the skin tones you mentioned.
When painting them I did paint each figure separately, & there is a slight tonal difference between all three. I think it hasn't been picked up too well by the camera.
I totally agree with your point, though, & next time I'll try to make more of a tonal difference.

Thanks again.
Joe.

The best Pink panther I've seen. Very great built.

I like the position of the vehicle on the ground.

Thanks for your comments!
The figures were put together over a few days & were "manipulated" to fit!
The driver is the Soldati SLDT-35004 German Afrika Korps Private; the commander is a mix of Bravo6 legs & Evolution Miniatures torso & the guy in the back is a Hobby Fan German Afrika Korps figure from the 88mm gun crew set heavily converted to fit into the seat.
All heads are Hornet Heads & the shemaghs are plumbers tape superglued into place.
The name of the game here is test fit, test fit, test fit!
