The first you can see is the use of spacers. This is because a space is needed for the ERA explosion to disrupts the HEAT jet successfully.

Hi Phil,
This statement is bothering me. Sorry that I made it and can't support it. What I can quote for discussion purposes only and I hope Steven Zaloga doesn't get mad at me.

"The Soviet EDZ differs from the Israeli Blazer type in a number of respects and works as follows. When the HEAT warhead detonates against the EDZ brick, the hypervelocity jet of metal particles from the warhead penetrates the brick and detonates a thin sheet of high explosive. This explosion propels two steel plates located on either side of the explosive sheet. The outward facing plate is blown up into the penetrating jet, eroding the metal stream by forcing more and more metal plate into the path of the jet. At the same time, the other plate is propelled back towards the tank armour by the explosion, then rebounds off the tank's armour up into the remaining stream of the warhead jet, further eroding it" Zaloga,S. J. "T-72 Main Battle Tank 1974-93", Osprey Publishing

Sorry I can't find more information about the space at the moment.

Best Regards,
Raul

Nice build I will be following this with interest I want to do a T-72 an have two kits I can use but not sure if they will be accurate. I have a trumpeter T-72B an the kirin T-72 lyon of Babylon not sure if they will be accurate Syrian T-72 tanks.

Happy modeling

Hi Bill;

The Kirin is the Old Dragon kit and is Not Accurate. And if the Trumpeter kit is the Older release then its a Copy of the Tamiya kit, and is not a very good copy. Now it could be made into a accurate T-72 with a Bit of Work, and if your willing too Invest in a AM turret. Follow the advice that the Guys are providing with these Builds and you wont be sorry.

Thx Mike and William!

The last row near the driver`s hatch is seldomly used in combat situation due to the fact that the driver can`t see squat...that I`ve read. Now here is the pics that I`ve used as ref:

Now I totally agree with you that I need to find a way to get some era blocks in front of the headlights...will do.
As for those who are aleready there, I`ve tried to get them offwith no succes, guess we`ll have to endure them.
Concerning the space between the hull and the blocks there is a spacer under each of the block I`ve laid down. I guess I can say that I am still learning
Thanks again Raul for the extra infos and the how to for era blocks...I should ask you first next time
When is the next U/D Raul?

Hi Phil,
I would suggest to consider three options.
1. Just adding the spacers.
2. Adding the small plate to gain height on the Tamiya A1 part that may be the piece causing trouble (I think that this plate is there for this reason). I believe that this is the way to go.
3. Cheat. Put some bags and backpacks where on the first front row of ERA. There is a photo of a Syrian T-72AV in green colors like this.
If you need more information on this options, especially number 2 shoot me a PM. I will be glad to discuss some ideas.

The next update, I think will be next week. I am trying to get some rest from the hull (I was making too many mistakes) and focus on the turret. I will be having lots of fun with the photoetch especially on the storage boxes.

Hi Vivek,
There are many vehicle options that you can build with the T-72, like a ZSU Shilka or 2S1 SPG. Please look at this link that has information on the vehicles of the Syrian Army that after 3 years of war I am sure that you can put most of them on the rebel hands (even a Israeli jeep may not be out of the question)
Syrian vehicles list

As for the figures, I haven't look into that yet.

Hi Mike,
Thanks a lot for the kind words.

Hi Bill,
Mike is right. Both kits, Kirin and Old Trumpeter T-72B are not up to today's standards. Unfortunately for a Syrian T-72 (versions Ural, A, AV) you will have to spend on Aftermarket sets. If you have the kit and don't mind it being inaccurate, the Kirin kit can be a fun build (I built one some years ago).

Raul

Side armor are upgraded. Once again I used mix and match photo refs and also the plan That raul posted up here! Thz Raul.
I have 2 weeks vacation, so plenty 'O' bench time for me YEEEHA!

Almost all of the miniarm kontakt blocs had molding issues, all on the rear side...I had to cheat a little but I think it will pass with the paint and weathering on.

Scratched a turms-t.
Raul, Thanks for the input on this one!
I did not have specific measures for the turms so, I used visual ref on the turret and started there.

Hi Phil,
Nice Turms-T sight! The hull also looks amazing!

It is a shame that there are so few picture of the Syrian T-72 with Turms. The thing that you may want to make sure is that the Turms' sight does not sit too tall, in particular the base. You can check the sight's height with the gunner's hatch.

The right side of the Turms' sight base is not very tall

You may want to also look at the T-72M4CZ for reference especially for the wind sensor.

Thanks Mike! I not out of the woods yet! The turms is the right width but I think it is 2mil. too high...darn it!
William, Glad this thread can help. T-72's are a great subject with almost endless quantity of variants, so it does stir some very interesting disscution.

Raul! Once again you save the day! Those 2 last picture: Soooo clear! It is definitly to high seing this....Back under the knive.
Thanks bro.

Some u/d on the turret. Very intricate turret with lots of details and mix and match to do. Definitky out of my comfort zone here. I think it is worth it tough.

turretdetail01 par asmodeuss, sur Flickr

turretdetail02 par asmodeuss, sur Flickr.

I am a little disapointed with the minarm kit overall...Lot of fitting problems, warpage and the supposed turned barrel is resine... and warped! That said detail level is just great and price more than fair...Maybe I didn't get my coffee right this morning

Have a nice day

Just a word of caution for those trying to paint syrian tancolor.I learned it the hard way.there are two deck tans in tamiya.XF-55 and XF-78. Both are labeled as deck tan .XF-78 is what you want.I think it os wooden deck tan.

Mon ami,
S'il vous plaît, ne pas oublier le capteur de vent. The tank looks very impressive! Tamiya parts B68, B80 and the top of B85 could help you in making the wind sensor.

Good luck!

Is it the stick shaped thing behind the gunner's hatch? I seem to have difficulty to get pictures that cross ref.
