Hello. Just started AFV Club's PanzerFunkwagen. This model has great detail. Small parts that come off the sprue with no problems. The valve stems even come as seperate parts, cool. The tires are vinyl, we'll see what happens with those as far as painting goes. Keep you posted, thanks for looking, Wingman out.

Looking good so far. Any issues? I note that you have the wheels turned, do you have to modify the kit to do this or is it built in? I love the German 8 wheelers and am thinking of getting an Sdkfz263 myself, so will follow this with interest...

I always thought that the inner four wheels' turning angle would be less severe than the frontmost and rearmost set of wheels. Am I mistaken?

Hi Steve. No issues so far. You don't have to modify anything to turn the wheels. It's a bit tricky aligning everything up, but if you take your time, you'll be O.K. Thanks for looking, Wingman out.

Hey Roy. I believe your right. I can lessen the angle a bit yet, thanks for tip, Wingman out.

Wingman;

While brass stick grenades are pretty cool and I'll guess also those resin items...

Just as an idea and suggestion: raiding any of many Dragon German figure sets will yield lots of great grenades of different types along with other useful personal equipment that might appear in lockers or bins. And the fig kits may be in your stash (they sure are in mine, and I don't actually do figures! ) and / or are acquired for reasonable prices at the shows or on the evilbay or from the e-vendors.

I am unsure, but maybe some of the Gen 2 kits would have some decals for grenade labels, etc.? Or maybe that's the AM item a guy really needs!

While it may seem cool, I think it unlikely that grenades were often just left lying around in various bins and boxes and such, or rolling about loose underfoot, etc. German AFV had carefully-made and labelled racks for all of these useful little items crew might want to have - and the insides of German AFV were stenciled to indicate what went in each rack: "Alles in ordnung!"

Cheers!

Thanks for the help guys, greatly appreciated. Bob, I agree with you about not having grenades laying around now that I think about it. I'm hoping to find some small tool boxes and such. Jim, I'll check out Haulers offering with the box to store them in.Mike, I'll get a photo up soon. I plan on having the pole antenna all the way up, it looks very cool that way. As far as the "wash line" antenna, the instructions have you leaving the two support poles in a natural wood. Question, I'm going to have a lot of the hatches open, where the doors come together, would that area be a primer color since it was closed for painting? Thanks again for all the help, Wingman out.

Please keep us posted on your building of the extended poll antenna. I have an Italeri Opel Blitz radio van (with scratch built interior and scratch conversion to a 4x4) and I would like to pose it on a dio of tall pine trees with the pole antenna extended. Mike

Slightly off topic - - Here's the one you really have me interested in! Same chassis but I really like the way the wash line antenna bends around to give extra clearance for the pole antenna!

And again it would be great to see the pole antenna fully extended.

It would seem that the AFV Club 263 kit GIVES US THE OPTION of building the pole antenna in the extended position - WOW!

See Armorama kit review at:

https://armorama.kitmaker.net/news/13382

Does the 231/232 kit contain the same option?

And yes, center four wheels should be canted at a lesser angle than the ourside four. An easy fix!

About hatches and painting the flanges...

I would strongly recommend painting the hatches themselves your basecoat color inside and out, including the flange lip on the hatch. (Unless you determine that there was some sort of weather-stripping or gasket around that hatch, assume that it was just a metal plate and paint it accordingly, with perhaps nicks and chipping at the metal-contact-metal flange and edges.)

The corresponding lip and flange on the hull also would have been basecoat color and chipped as needed. (Again unless you determine or add weather-stripping.)

NO naked primer would likely have been left visible - these were earlier-war and pre-war production vehicles and few corners were taken in building and painting them. I think it safe to assume that all the major pieces - including hatch covers - were painted separately with the factory basecoat color, just like standard civilian auto painting, and NOT as if it were a used car going through the old "el-cheepo" auto-painting place where they may simply roll the vehicle in and spray all visible surfaces - window glass, masking tape, dirt, available metal, rust clumps, rubber seals, etc. - with paint! (Maybe you can tell that I spent some time in Chicago and saw the Earl Scheib Auto Painters at work... great paint and well-applied... over everything available. The buyer really needed to be on his toes lest something you want left unpainted got a coat.. and stuff you wanted painted did not, due to being accidently covered... )

Armorama::Dioramas:"Box of Grenades"

This is a pretty nice looking set of Stick Grenades made by Hauler. Looks like you get about 30, resin Model 24 Stielhandgranate along with resin and PE shipping boxes along with a PE shipping label painting stencil.

The new announcement title and forum placement makes finding the review and new product hard. If the new title had been something like: "Hauler Resin and PE Stick Grenade Set" it might have caught my attention sooner.

Still, these might help you.

Be aware that the Germans had a fairly standardized stowage rack on the walls of most of their armored cars just for the Stielhandgranate.

Stick Grenade Rack SdKfz 222

Here's a diagram of the steering angles on the German heavy 8-wheeled armored cars. Note that the angles shown here are for the tightest turn possible and that lesser steering angles are, of course, possible. However, you can see the amount of difference between the front and rear wheel angles and the center wheel angles. Also note that the inside wheel angles are higher than the outside wheel angles.

very nice work so far. Would the wheels also tilt vertically slightly when turned? am considering having my 222 with wheels turned but thought I had read somewhere that they would be slighty off vertical as well?
