Don't know if you've seen it yet, but Takom have just announced a 1:144 Ratte. Isn't it always the way?

I can see a diorama of Adolph & cronies standing next to the completed Beast, with an Engineer pointing out its features with reference to a "1/6 scale" engineering mock-up on a table (courtesy of Takom!)...

I'll be danged.

Side note, working on a 1/35th M102 for a campaign. What that really means is that my bench is clear of 30 pounds of plastic...in other words: I have space to work on the air intake and exhaust grills.

Thanks for the heads up Rob...I'll have to check it out; see how close they are.

You could have just scaled up the Takom one!

Actually, I think Takom has spies in Mike's workshop ... where the bar has been set!

I've moved the M102 off to the side for a little work on the Ratte.

Started working on the air intakes. K&S brass strip and plastic strip frames.

Right now I've cut 9 louvers...I think I'll do 10 so that there will be a little overlap should I decide to close up one side and leave the other open (still up in the air).

Once this is done, I'll finish up the exhaust with more louvers, clean up the seams, and build the two sets of stairs. Then I can prime the engine deck area and start on helipad (it'll be drop-in-able/removable). And of course, continue to cut the holes and mount the anti-aircraft bases.

Mike

p.s.

@Biggles2 - the Takom one is kind of boring...and so small!!

@Mike - I'm going to have set the traps for them. If I catch one I'll coerce them in to sending some kits my way...or I'll use some super-thin CA on 'em!

So that's what that North Korea hacking thing was about... They must've hacked into Mike's computer, copied his pictures if his project and then somehow sent... Faxed... those pictures to Takom... Then again...

Great work. A lot of really nice details going into this build.

Cannot wait to see the final result!

Back on the bench (I can work on this and the M102 howitzer - by using the turret base as a "work bench." )

Finished cutting the holes for the Kugel's and remade one of the intake louver frames - couldn't get the other square.

And I, for the first time, poured me some resin. Needed eight kugelblende for the sides of the Ratte:

Neat project. Have you considered doing a She'Va - http://www.library.beau.org/lib/ebooks/baen/04/images/Art_ShevaSpec.jpg - after this?

Michael, Trevor: Thanks for the comments.

Malcolm: Good gawd! THAT I wouldn't do in 1/35th. Nope. No way. Maybe in 1/72nd. Never saw that before. Where's it from?

Hi Mike
If you haven't read the John Ringo books 'A Hymn Before Battle', 'Gust Front', 'When the Devil Dances', 'Hells Faire' - those are the main ones that feature the She'Va. She'Va is short for Shenanadoah Valley where they are built. She'Va 9 is named BunBun and eventually gets upgraded with multiple M1 Abrams turrets mounting Metal Storm 105mm clustered barrels atop the turret for antipersonnel use. They're a very good read - http://www.baenebooks.com/p-217-a-hymn-before-battle.aspx -

I agree, excellent read. Also try 'The watch in the Rine'
Don't forget about the Metalstorm 40mm packs for BunBun

Malcolm,

Thanks for the link. Just read the first two books.

O'Neal is an interesting character. Now to see about getting the follow-on books.

Getting the laundry room tiled so the washer and dryer and a cabinet are in my "shop." Space it real tight.

I've started to attach the Kugel "towers" and close up the seams.

Ordered 10 more RB Model 7,92mm MG34 barrels. I will have 6 to a side which means I need to cast a couple more mounts. No biggie.

I guess I'm at the point where I can add the "larger, not so delicate" details. Before long though, I'm going to have to add the road wheels, give it a primer red coat underneath, and then I can work the fine details.

Getting there, surely.

Hi Mike
Glad you enjoyed the read, there's supposed to be another due later this year. Thought this might be of interest - http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/rc-tanks-369/11614090-panzer-p-1000-ratte-rat.html -

Loved the first two books. I'll be seeking out the series now.

Worked on the AA platforms. Just a couple spots to tighten up. Also did some work on the intake "housing." That too has a little more to go.

I guess once I'm done with the main parts around the engine deck I'll start on the front.

Where the beastie is now:

I do have a line on eight Modellbau Schatton Kugelblitz barrels. They're not cheap but man are they NICE!

Mike,

Just joined in. Spectacular work! You oughta use it as the master for resin versions! Heavy - like the real thing!
