Question for the crowd.
I popped open my SturmTiger the other night to sort of preview what I'd be up against, and I see that the instructions call for Zimming various parts of the fuselage. I'm too cheap to by the AM resin zimm upgrade for this kit, but I've also never tried my hand at zimm before and am abit nervous about mucking it up with a campaign on the line.
So I got to thinking about how I might tackle the Zimm in a way that doesn't result in an irreperable mess, and I hit on an ide I thought I would run past everyone to get their thoughts. Here it is:
Instead of spreading Zimm material on the tank, slaving to get a uniform thickness, then trying to achieve a consistent pattern, I thought perhaps I could roll out a very thin sheet of epoxy--just as if I were making an epoxy tarp--and then apply the zimm texture off the tank. Once the epoxy is hardened I can just cut out the pieces, trim to fit as required, and glue to the tank.
Does anyone know if this technique has been tried before, and if so, any lessons learned from the experience?

I did the Tamyia and AFV versions, on one of them I used ATAK Zimm, I worked great.
Will try to find the photos of the AFV, that might help.
I remember I had no big problems with the kit, the only was with a metal spring they use on the idler wheel I think, it was very difficult to apply so I didn't use it.

Everything on the Stürmtiger is ready for primer except the tracks, which are still coming along slowly. Hoping once I get some paint on this beast it will blend in my first-ever attempt at Zimm, which was by and large a disaster. Didn't mind going for a damaged appearance on the zimm, but then that meant having to try to tear up the fenders a bit, which wasn't the easiest task with the styrene OOB fenders. Left the front mud flaps off altogether as they seem to be missing in most photos I have seen.

Awfully quiet in this campaign....
Anyway, got a start on the ambush camo. Looks like my Stürmtiger has a bad case of chicken pox:
Started with a base of red-brown and then applied blu-tac masking to the areas that would end up dark yellow. Followed that with a coat of dark yellow and masking the rest of the vehicle. The masking went surprisingly quickly once I got my technique down. The little spots of green and brown are to help me keep track of what color goes where once I break out the airbrush.

And, the reveal...
Okay, so I went a bit nuts with the spots. And in hindsight I should have masked the borders of the different colors. But it's my first attempt at ambush camo, and I think once the chipping, filters, and washes are done it will blend nicely and not look too bad.

I have this bad boy in my stash...a 150mm beast in resin from AGV Models. Too bad my time is taken up with other campaigns...and life in general. Maybe another campaign!

Very nice job on the Sturmtiger there Mark! I wish I'd known about the contest earlier, but moving makes you lose track of everything.
I have a Scud-B from Dragon and a Bronco models Bishop sitting in my pending pile. maybe next campaign.

Well, time to put this one in the done locker:
Won't measure up to the standards of many around here (particularly my iPhone photography), but for my first attempt at Zimmerit and ambush camo I can live with the results.
Good luck to everyone who is still plugging away at this one. I'm headed back to the Whole Hog campaign now...

Here is my start up photo for the campaign.
It is a 75mm Pack Howitzer from Vision Models.

Here is the photo of the painted pack howitzer.
It has the base olive drab and vallejo polyurethane satin varnish. I will let that dry for 48 hours and then try the washes and followed with a dry brush session.
