I suspect that licensing has something to do with it, especially with Caterpillar vehicles. Sure, die-casts are available but they are expensive, licensed, and also sold by Cat. I don't know how Meng got around it (I don't have my kit here but does it even mention "Cat" on the box?).

AMT/Ertl used to make some construction vehicles in 1/25 years ago. They go for big bucks on eBay now. I'd like to build something like that, too.

I have reliable news from a distributor that the Meng D9 will not be restocked and production has ceased. Cat is demanding royalties and licensing fees, Meng ain't playing that game. Same thing will happen to the D7, unfortunately.

There are a few more in resin:
TBmodels does a KN-251: http://www.tbmodels.cz/1-35----kn-251.html
MMK does a Caterpillar D6: http://www.mmk.cz/en/models/detail/140
Minimanfactory does a M917 dumptruck http://www.minimanfactory.com/en/m917-dump-truck-i36/
Gr,
Marcel
Tomas (of TB-models) informed me yesterday that the second edition of the KN-251 is ready. He is also doing an OT-10, the Czech-built armoured half track based on the Sd.Kz 251.

But how did Meng market the D9 in the first place? Wouldn't they already have had to pay to use the name?

Construction vehicles AND civilian transport vehicles required, how many governments are switching to "off the shelf" vehicles now that defence budgets are being cut.
How many times now on the news do we see civvy vehicles being used as replacements or to make up the shortfall ?.
How many IDF/US Army Diorama`s could be built if a larger range of mainstream plastic vehicles were available ?.

New Ray makes a lot of nice 1/32 scale trucks and trailers. But.............
1. They are plastic/diecast
2. Needs a lot of extra details
and
3. Just like the Monogram snap tite trucks, the wheels are completely wrong and there isn't a good set of wheels in that scale to swap them out with.

Great thread. Construction in our back yard inspired me to go with outside the camera. Lots of stray "cats" in the yard! lol

A beautiful construction article by Nick Haskill on scratch building an armored military front end loader, a sheep's foot compactor AND an armored cab dump truck can be found at:
http://armorama.kitmaker.net/forums/225304
Nick also shows us some fantastic diorama and figure work as well.

As Caterpillar/Cat hold the world-wide patent on the 'high-track' system then Meng's offering (combined with the use of 'D9') can only lead to the conclusion it is a replica of a Caterpillar/Cat product and as Caterpillar/Cat zealously guard their brand name it was a given that legal action was to happen as it will with the recently released 'D7's'.
As much as I would love to see Engineering equipment produced in plastic I sincerely doubt there will be much progress in this area due entirely to the licensing/royalties mind-set of these large corporations.
However on a positive note - at least a few more people may be willing to enter the dark-side of modelling (scratchbuilding ) before it becomes a lost art .

The people who would buy civilian vehicle models are probably going to be turned off by the complexity of a state of the art kit. They like vehicles, they are not modelers.
KL
Kurt - you seem to use a very broad brush in regards to "civilian" vehicle modellers. Any basis on which you can substantiate your claim that they are not modellers!.
