This is to announce a replacement campaign which was originally proposed by Kenneth Ostergaard earlier this year, but somehow it went wrong.

Therefore I have resubmitted this campaign as Leopardmania 50 to celebrate 50 years of service for Leopard 1.

In September 1965, the Bundeswehr received the first production batch of their new MBT - the Leopard tank. This MBT was the backbone in many European countries during the Cold War. Now, 50 years later, it is still an essential part of the tank force in many countries. It developed through many versions and all countries have made their own peculiarities too; and then there are all special purpose vehicles too.

If anyone would like to join in, we need 10 proposals for subjects from 10 modellers before the campaign becomes official. I will start a new link to kick it off.

Basic rules are:

Any Leopard 1-based vehicle. Any country. Any model manufacturer. Out of the box, conversion, scratch built - anything goes. Any MBT or special purpose vehicle.

No fantasy colour schemes and no WOTIFs.

Scale - any.

Leopard Workshop will offer the winner a prize of LW accessories of the winner's choice up to a value of 100 euros/72 GBP/110 USD.

If the winner uses any Workshop parts, I will also refund the purchase price of those parts used.

I quite like Eric Rains' ideas which I did not see before I made the official submission. To quote Eric:

a. Partially started kits ARE allowed provided that the kit is NOT more than 50% finished.(Having only un-started kits will severely limit the appeal and potential number of participants. I mean really what does it matter if the kit is started or not and as several people have already stated they have began their Leopards, so I think 50% is just fine. This will be somewhat subjective but I think everyone will understand the intent.)

b. Building can be started if NOT more than 50% of the kit is finished on the official start date. (See Above)

c. Posting your builds in other campaigns IS allowed.(See Above, “I never understood why this should not be allowed in the first place” from the 500+ Campaign)

I suppose I could chip in with a Gepard seeing as what ifs aren't eligible, dependent on time and commitments of course.

I have suggested that the campaign finishes on May 1 next year. I hope that's enough time as a Gepard would be very welcome.

Ok, Michael, count me in. Heck, if the C2 is to far along I can always fall back and build a A3/A4 or that Leopard 1A2.... Just more reason to hit the Leopard Club shop!

At this point I am thinking a C1 MEXAS.

Hi Mike,

Not sure yet, but options include an A2 used as shop tractor, or a Fahrschule vehicle. I've got a long list of potential projects, and a stack of Italeri/Revell kits to use up!

I'm in with Mengs Leo 1A4 to convert to a Leo AS1.

Two questions first...

1-I know Mengs road wheels from are questionable would the Italeri 1A4 wheels be any better or correct (I have it buried in the shed somewhere)

2-Is there any difference between the tracks for an 1A5, C2 and the AS1.

Anything is better than the Meng wheels. With Italeri/Revell you have grooves around the tyres to fill in. The best bet is Leopard Workshop LW001-1.

No difference at all in the tracks for those three. Apart from early production Leo 1s and Dutch Army ones, nearly all Leo 1 tracks are the same.

Thanks Michael just looking over the Leopard Club review now, and am tempted to go for the wheels. Thanks for the good news on the tracks as well (Will be using the tracks from Takoms 1A5/C2).

I think you will have to use the Takom sprocket then as the Meng one is a different width.

After they released the 1A4, Meng released some really good redesigned Leo 1 tracks as a separate kit (different to the 1A4 tracks). I use them all the time. They are the same as in the 1A5 kit and don't need glue to build them. Look on Leopard Club and you'll find my review.

I've just stocked up with a fair number of Leopard Club products along with a Mouse House dozer kit and Spade Ace individual track links. That being the case, I'm on board with a Canadian C2.

As this will be my first campaign, can someone tell me where I need to go, and what I need to do to sign up?

Thanks in advance.

Cheers,

Chris

Chris as far as I can tell it hasn't been officially listed but when it Is it should be here

Michael, just built up 5 links and yup, you're right (guess your not surprised huh ). Well between the A4 for this and the Meng A5 and Takom C2 (I have on the go), I'll figure something out.

Count me in with either a 1:72 Revell 1A5, a Revell Biber or an Italeri 1A4 depending on what I can get my hands on.

I guess you have the ten required prospects now

Already we have 9 takers. We only need 1 more to make this campaign 'official'!

The nine are:
1 Kimmo Happonen - Gepard
2 Bob Wiber - 1A4/A4 or 1A2?
3 Eric Rains - C2 MEXAS
4 Tom Cromwell - 1A2 tractor, Fahrshulpanzer?
5 Kevin Brant - C2
6 Andrew Harris - AS1
7 Chris Johnson - C2
8 Eric Cannuk 100 - C1 MEXAS
9 Christian Armoured 76 - Biber, 1A4 or 1A5 (1.72)

My only concern is that 50% of these are Canadian subjects:-)

Nothing at all Kevin. It would just be nice to have a little more variety, but I'm sure we will get that if more people join in. At least the Canadian subjects ate mostly different - C1 MEXAS, C2 and C2 MEXAS.

C1 MEXAS is one of my two favourite Leo 1s, but I've built one already:-)
