Rob,

It's coming together nicely! I'm always so worried about knocking some paints or washes over and ruining stuff. I need a holder as well.

Cheers,
Dustin

Gotta be careful with that glue! I fear knocking it over and spilling it into the carpet. Your inside looks great from the outside, Rob.

Hi everyone, the build is progressing nicely. Just finished up the main body of the vehicle and luckily all the angles worked out. I just needed a little putty around one side of the front of the vehicle. I used the liquid testors plastic cement and the extra working time allowed me to get the angles to come out right. Of course I had a great blunder that I dumped over the glue and lost ½ the bottle that stuff is good it eat my lines off the cutting mat and drenched the end on one finder side of my model. Luckily I remembered not to touch the plastic and just let it dry, no damage was done. I have decided that I am going to leave the body off the chasse till I finish painting it and then I will put them to gather for weathering, It will be easier than typing off the bottom part of the running gears. These pictures show it just temporally sitting on the chasse.

Well it’s off to glue more plastic together just need to finish up the rocket launcher and then I am ready to paint it. Also need to build some form of glue holder so I can’t knock over another bottle, that stuff isn’t cheap as my wife let me know.

Happy modeling
Robert

Nice progress Robert. Indeed it is a pain knocking over the glue bottle -- I had a couple of incidents of that, as well as tipping paint bottles! You can try sticking the bottle on top of Blue Tac or any similar material.

Cheers,

Tat

Hi everyone there has been a slight slow down to the build because of a condition that would not let me sit in any chair. Great news is I am on the mend and should be setting at the desk again by next week. Here is an update of what I had completed before the condition struck.

I had completed the launcher and primed the whole thing in Vallejo black primer. I let that set up for 24 hours and then applied a base coat of a Vallejo Dark Yellow / light brown mix. The mix helped cut down on some of the green tint of the Dark Yellow.

Lesson Learned: Do not paint the Rocket Launcher on the body of the vehicle. It is now in a permanent location. That is what happens when you are lazy and did not want to mask the opening.

Finally got some new work done after 6 weeks. I was hoping to do a sprayed camo pattern but my airbrush will not do it even with a soft mask. It is only good for base coating and varnishing. So I said hell with it and I am doing it by hand with a brush. I like the two colors even though I think the green is to dark, but it works for me. The two colors are Vallejo saddle brown and yellow olive.

Hi Rob,
Nothing wrong with that red-brown. Sorry to hear your airbrush isn't up to the task. You can do a lot of softening to your camoflage with a dot filter.

Thanks Gaz, What I have is a Badger 250 spray gun and that about sum's up its ability. It is just a more controlled spray can. The good news is I get to get a new airbrush for my birthday come Aug. I just view brush painting as a skill I am working on.

I figured that a nice filter to blind the colors and then some dry brushing, chipping and dust effects should bring it together at lest that is what I hope.

Your hand-brushed camo came out well Robert.

I wouldn't be too fussy about getting it laid down perfectly because in reality they are not. Sans sprays and brushes, troops in the field applied camo with rags, brooms as well.

Indeed a lighter shade of the base color applied as filter should soften thus blend the camo.

Cheers,

Tat

Nice build.
The trick with using a black primer is to spray multiple , very thin coats of paint over top of it...& not to actually cover up the black totally. You want the black to bleed through in places.A very light shade of dark should show thru your light coats of Dark Yellow of whatever paint you use. ie- edges of panels..bolts.. Then dry brush the dark yellow paint with a lighter shade of dark yellow onto the edges of bolts or high spots , to add even more depth.
Same with your tri colors...dry brush a lighter shade on the edges.
My 2 cents

Thanks David, My end goal once I get my better air brush is to work with the black and white style. Thanks for the great info on painting over a black primer. I have always used a black primer I like the way it tends to shift the colors darker and if i miss a spot in a corner it makes a good shadow.

High everyone first thing is I would like to say thanks to everyone that is following along on the build and giving great suggestions. I finished my camo today. I think it looks ok for a first attempt. I have a couple of questions as I get ready to go forward. Just to let everyone know that I use Vallejo’s product range because my better half has an adverse reaction to enamels and I refuse to have to do my weathering outside. I just got Airbrushing and Weathering Techniques by Rob Ferreira and it is a great book for tricks on using Vallejo products. Now back to the questions.

1.Do you dry brush a tri color camo pattern in a lighter shade for each color or just the base color?

2.Do you dry brush before or after the filter to tie the colors together?

Thanks again for all the help and encouragement from everyone.

Looking real nice rob. I can't say if you need to match the colors on the dry brushing or not, but I would do the filter after the dry brushing for sure.

Robert
you can give it a aerografia acrylic matte varnish and then follow washing. That will protect the enamel paint. It gives to continue the work.

It’s hard to believe that it has been this long since an update on this project. I am still fighting my way through it. Been really busy and wreathing always seems to take me forever to do. The vehicle has been dry brushed, washed and chipped. Some dusting has been done. Need to finish it up. Procrastinating is one of my bigger weaknesses. I used new Vallejo weathering products and really like them. Need to practice some more with the streaking looks better in person than in the picture. I also finished up the fuel drums that will go with the dio. I am hoping that it will not be this long for the next update.

First off, excellent work there! Great looking model. I think the streaking looks okay. Oil based paints tend to stand out a lot more under brightly lit environments because you know... reflective yadda yadda... I also love those oil drums... they look so..natural?

@ Brian, I think the kit has been out of production for quite some time now. Bronco models does the same vehicle (CB35070) which is of better quality but also contains more parts and therefore much more expensive.

You could also try the Italeri kit (#277) since the Tamiya kit is essentially a rebox of it but with extra stuff. Its cheaper but has its share of issues.

Thanks Brian, The kit was Tamiya re-box of the Italeri Kit. Figures and individual link tracks we the two big things added to the kit by Tamiya. I found it a ok kit to work with.
