Choice is always good,
We could have a selection of "one user" avatars for people who win campaigns or other honors, they could select a unique one that stands out. A nice little prize in addition to the ribbons.

I am all for user avatars. However, the powers that be need to be able to quickly remove, censor, or delete any user offensive ones. I have been to many a site where there is always at least one who's avatar is not up to par, ie. childish.
