Choice is always good,
We could have a selection of "one user" avatars for people who win campaigns or other honors, they could select a unique one that stands out. A nice little prize in addition to the ribbons.

I am happy with mine at present, but change is good

I am all for user avatars. However, the powers that be need to be able to quickly remove, censor, or delete any user offensive ones. I have been to many a site where there is always at least one who's avatar is not up to par, ie. childish.

Without the fun now, I'm pro in having the choice of picking your own avatar. It goes without saying that "the powers" (including myself) should keep their eyes open.
