Ok here's a last try! (I don't no why it's not working?)

I did the following work on the kit:
1- Cut the wings of (for easy painting later)
2- Drilled holes for the exhausts
3- Changed the shape of the air intake (it was to square)
4- Drilled holes for the cowling guns
5- Drilled holes on the front cover
6- Made a new detailled and more accurate propeller

Hi all!

Sorry for the mess! I actually had to reload the first picture because it didn't show up! Now it's working!
I forgot to say that I also sanded the motor cowling to have a smoother curvature (this would have been number 7)
Ok! This time it's finished! Ouf!

Jean-Luc,

You're really going all out with the Chaika, and it's really showing great progress! My D.VII needs the decals on the bottom of the wing, and then it's off to the cardboard box ... err ... spray booth for a good gloss coat to seal in those troublesome decals. Considering the problems I had with getting them to stick, I'm really worried about peeling them up when I have to mask bits for further painting.

I also have my next kit pulled out. I'll try to get a double build done for this campaign.

Hi Mika!

You don't have achieved you Fokker and you already think of an other one! Someone talked about "masochism" earlier! :-)
But I must confess, I really want to build the Hs "Eins-Zwei-Drei" (Henshel Hs 123) too! I'll see...
I really got some troubles with the pics and I just noticed that one is gone again! Don't know what's happening! But I just enlisted as an "A guard" member to have more storage for my pics... and of course to support Armorama! :-)
If you don't see the pics, you can go to my gallery...

Hi all!

I managed to sand the model smooth and add depth to the panel lines by rescribing them. For the painting, I first painted a coat of grey and then various shades of aluminium colors. I used only Tamiya acrylics. That was the longer part of the building!
Now comes the hard one! Painting the green mottling on the uppersides of the model! Uuuhh!
I think I'll do that this week-end! Stay tuned!

Hi all!

I'm progressing with the "Chaïka". I began the mottling and it's almost finished now! I made some tests and decided to cut patterns on paper to paint the model. I could have paint it by free hand but didn't want to take the risk of messing up the aluminium paint! So I opted for the patterns.

I searched for reference pics of the plane (other than the "Wanaka" I-153) but found little. Some profiles, including the one in the kit, would let me think the green paint was hand-brushed and maybe not sprayed on the real aircraft. But I like the "giraffe" like skin so I choose to be less accurate maybe... Anyway I think it's good like that!

I'll go on with decalling, panel lines washing, future coating and wingsl rigging... Still some work to do!

Jean-Luc,

That's a very nice technique you used there an it gives a great result. I will try that once also, thanks for sharing!!

Hi all!

I managed to finish the camouflage of my Chaïka!

I think I'll be finished in a few days! Left to do are the landing gear, the windscreen, the engine exhausts and VERY LITTLE weathering! It would be a shame for the camouflage to add to much of it isn't it?

I just can't seem to get motivated to build my Nichimo Tachikawa ki9 Spruce. I think it has something to do with the bright orange colour :-) :-).
Think i might go and build a tank for a while.

I too haven't started yet (I have washed the sprues, if you want to call that progress...). But I have a good excuse, I have that T-34 still on my workbench. There's just no room for a Camel right now. I promise to get started soon!

betheyn, just put on some sunglasses while building this plane.

We Dutch just like orange!
How come you don't like orange? It has to do something with soccer, right? :-) :-)

Actually, I'm stucked with my Nieuport at the moment...
Taking part in 13 (!) campaigns at this moment, I have to do some serious campaign-management...

But it's just so fun to join...

That Chaika as turning out be quite a piece of workmanship!

If the orange is putting you off, mask off what you've already painted on the sprues and hit the whole thing with some primer. It's what I do to get the 'progress' feeling on a kit.

My progress has slowed as work is making a serious attempt to slay me before I get to go on vacation. I thought I was ready for gloss and paint, but alas, I have 80+ wing rib tape decals to apply first. These things are a real bear to try to get to line up, and I'm afraid it will be a 'good enuff' effort.

No pix, sorry.

Hi all!

My Tchaïka is finished! I think, after all the negative posts that came in lately, this would be a more more positive one! :-)

The build was, in all, relatively straightforward and I didn't encounter too much problems... it was a little bit longer than expected because I made some minor adjustments (see previous posts) but it took only 15 days overall. Maybe the secret is to not participate to 13 campaings! :-)
This is my second Classic Airframes model after the Fokker DXXI and I was pleased with both of them!
I'll post a thread on the main page of the aircraft forum with more pictures and leave the "in progress" pics in my gallery!
By the way, do I get a special award for finishing first?

Good luck to you all!

She's a beauty! I realy like that camouflage and those red stars are looking great against the silver and green...

I also like the panel lining (do I say that correct?). In my Matchbox kit in teh Air over the sea campaign), the lines where ON the model, not IN.
I read about modellers who can get those 'ON' lines 'IN' (what I mean is: they remove the lines on the plain and scratch (?) the lines in again...) That looks a hell of a job to me. Is that really a technique? And if so, how does it go in practice?

Ah, 13 campaigns, I know, I know.... It's just so much fun... My secret is; my new job starts in september instead of june, so I had suddenly 3 months to 'overcome' :-)

Hi Paul!

Thanks for the nice words!
By saying IN and ON I suppose you refer to ENGRAVED and RAISED! The technique to eliminate raised panel lines and replace them by engraved ones (like you find them in modern kits) is called SCRIBING PANEL LINES!
You can find more infos in Mal Mayfield's (Holdfast) [http://www.armorama.co.uk//features/471]Eezee[/url] article, though there are as much techniques as there are modelers out there!

Jean-Luc

By the way, the panel lines on my Chaïka have been rescribed to achieve a better finish as the one on the kit weren't deep enough in my opinion.

I still need to start painting my Nieuport 28. it is in subassemblies now.

How did you do the aluminium ring around the engine cowling ?

Bonjour Anthony!

I made the cowling strip with simple aluminium paper cut with scissors... but I think the alu is too bright! I should have taken the other side of the aluminium paper wich is closer to the real thing.

Hi Guys,

My choices are either the Roden 1/72 Pfalz D.XII, and Airfix Hanover C.IV, or Blue Max 1/48 Pheonix D.1 (most likely).

All are underway. I have until November???

JPTRR,

Kits underway I'd say are fine as long as its not too far along already (like say just waiting for paint / decals).

As far as my D.VII goes, last night I pulled off the wing rib decals. couldn't stand the way they looked - must have been some 6 scale inches wide. I'll go with the ahistorical scheme of no wing rib decals.
