While playing around with a fix on the delete topic link I accidently deleted the ongoing topic on the recent changes to the site (sorry guys!) I thought I would try to start up another. Some of your suggestions on the last one have already been implemented. Note the Latest Posts link is back down at the bottom of the forum pages.
As for people who might have to scroll right on some or all posts... I gave this some thought before I started this and I have stopped trying to shoe-horn the site into an 800 x 600 resolution screen. This was so the norm for sites about 8 years ago. I understand that many of you are not so technically inclined with Windows, but changing your screen resolution can do wonders for your online browsing.
For Windows based machines simply right click on the empty desktop, left click on "properties". Click the "Settings" tab. This will tell you what screen res you are on now. If you are on 800 x 600 I would recommend increasing it one or two notches until the screen feels right for you. For example I am using a 21" flatscreen at work and my resolution is 1600 x 1200. Which yes that means I can fit 4 (!!!) of your 800 x 600 screens on mine at once. :-)
As for those who what a return to the old glory days of Armorama... I give you this: http://www.corporatecasuals.com/storefront2/storefront.asp?storefrontid=32
This menu and interface are what the site was like during the first 6 months.
Cheers,
Jim

Logout is still accessable from your "My Account" page.
Of course unless you are a staff member, someone who shares thier computer with others, or just really security conscious, there is no real need to logout on a routine basis.
Thanks,
Jim

I haven't been to active on the site for the last two days but I must say I really like the 'new look'.
Yea it was abit 'different' at first but I just looked at the page top to bottom left to right for a minute and realized that everything is there and easy enough to get to.
Change is good. I like this one. Jim here's one for you on all your hard work -

Kevin,
Simple....they are tracking 2-4 users and we have to track 100-200.
It's just not feasible anymore. Not with a 50,000+ image gallery also running on the server.
Sorry,
Jim

Is there a function that will allow one to search only the forums? Sometimes you only need to search forums, not the entire site.

Patrick,
I have mentioned this before but I am getting away from the non-cached HIGHLY database intensive searching that the integrated forum and site searching allowed. It's a simple numbers game. With close to 500,000 posts, it's just too much for the database to deal with when people do a "search all" query.
Google has tens of thousands of the sites pages "cached" and this has little or no performance drawback for the site. I realize Google's results will not narrow down a search to the forum (unless you get really creative on the advanced search settings) but that's the best I can do until we can afford a secondary server appliance whose purpose is to cache the site for searching. (Google sells these btw...they run about $40,000).
Thanks,
Jim

Now that it's back, I appreciate it even more.

well, i can esaily change over to a higher resolution, however my eyes won't like it.
When you change resolutions make sure to increase the font size to medium or large. That should help you.

Pocket change..........sign us up for two.
I was just curious about the search thing. We have to make allowances for progress. All in all, the changes are good. What's up your sleeve next?

Jim, while I may not be as technically advanced as you or some of the other guys around here I do know my way around a computer well enough to do this simple kind of stuff. I've tried changing the screen resolution before, and resizing the font, but my eyes just don't like it. (even when I've given them a few days to try and "adjust") I go back to the tired old saying, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". I'll get used to the new look, but for me at least the site is not any faster than before, so why the changes? Oh, and thanks for putting the latest posts link back on the bottom of the page. Last thing then I'll shut-up . The logout button on the front page was handy if you were checking in say at work, on a "community" computer. But hey who would be doing that while at work??? :-)
Again, just my .02 cents,
Mike

Jim,
Thanks for working so hard.
And spending the money.
And taking flak.
And booting no-good-niks.
And giving us a site to congregate and talk plastic.
It has never been better.
And I promise to continue nagging my ol' lady to let me sign up for A-Guard.
Cuhail
