As I recall the Schwimmwagen was not developed for the invasion of Britain but as a tactical tool for scouting etc.
I think there was a huge demand for a small amphibious vehicle for scouting missions etc. Especially on the Eastern front where bridges were far between and lots of them probably destroyed.
Being able to cross rivers and lakes would in many cases be a nice capability to have when scouting out enemy forces.
Just my 2 cents.

Progress is being made on my build as well. The overall fit is okay, but some parts seem to be a little on the heavy side. Also the kit includes the wheel hub for a spare wheel, but only 8 tires leaving none for the spare wheel
I will post some WiP pictures this week. I am planning to make a "shark mouth" version as pr the two pictures below. The pictures are supposed to be from Causassus, but if this means Chechenya I do not know. I have the decals for both versions
I have not decided what type of shark mouth I like the most......
Also if you fancy a conversion check out this version which should be from Chechenya. It should be made up of parts from a T-72 and/or a T-72B.
Here are some general pictures of BTR-80s. Notice the the life belt on top of the MG turret. Also notice the fitting of grenade launcher and a chair on top of one of the other BTR-80s. Pretty exposed position although I am sure the field of fire is almost unrestricted 360 degrees. Also the grenade launcher seem to restrict the launching of some of the smoke canisters.
I do not know if they use BTR-70s in Chechenya, but taking into account that the Russians seem to store everything and never completely phase anything out it is likely. After all they are still using BMP-1s in Chechenya. So with a little artistic license you could build yours as a Chechenya BTR-70 even though I have no sources for a BTR-70 in Chechenya.

I hear you on that. I lived in Tampa for a while and I can remember on more than one occasion needing an amphibious vehicle to go down Dale Mabry. I still recall people canoing down this street (Dale Mabry was...is one of Tampa's busiest commercially-lined streets).

Remember that the colors in that photo are Sand/Black/GREEN, not two tone brown and black, (which I think is cooler anyhow)

We can quickly agree about that, Jacques. There are a lot of cool camouflage schemes out the for Russian armour!

Well, I have completed my build, but of course I spilled the last of the sand coloured paint I need for my camouflage poaint job. And of course, my LHS is sold out of that colour right now. So while I wait for more paint so I can show my final build, I have some in progress shots for you all. Its Zvezda's BTR-70. Its a really quick and simple build, and the front wheels remain turnable/posable after the build is complete.

Is this Zvezda kit the same with the old Dragon? I wonder. I built a Dragon ages ago and the model was Lost in Action awhile back during cleaning. I would like to build another BTR-70, that's why I'm asking. Would you recommend it?

Ahh, thanks Emre. I had a feeling I was forgetting something, but couldn't find it. I'll drill out the barrels tomorrow. I would definately recommend this kit. The parts fit well, there is very little flash, and its very simple to build. I also like that you can turn the wheels anytime you want. The bad things are that the thinnest, most fagile parts (rails, handles) seem to be attached to the thickest sprue. So as long as you dont mind fixing those peices, or plan to substitute brass, there really aren't many drawbacks to this kit.
Once I have it painted and some final pictures taken, I plan on submitting a review I have written on it. Hopefully you will see it up in the next couple of weeks. I just need my LHS to get the paint I ordered from them yesterday.

I have made some progress on the big brother - the BTR-80. Construction is now completed. The tape on the front is just to hold the part together until the glue has dried. Next is a base coat of Russian green and some sand and black camouflage.

Hi Jesper, its looks great. I can't wait to see it painted. This will be my first time painting a Russian camo scheme on anything bigger than a figure, so we'll see how it goes

those of you waiting for AFV's Stryker, Internethobbies.com and greatmodels.com both got them in stock today. Price is about 33-34 depending on which place you order from. I ordered mine, so hopefully, i should have it in the next week or two. Hows everyones build coming???
