The last few years have seen an enormous number of finishing products from a variety of manufacturers. However as far as availability is concerned Tamiya still remains a popular choice. Here's news of a New product range from the Japanese manufacturer, with a real question mark over what will be its ACTUAL availability...
Tamiya recently announced the following set of products:

Panel Line Accent Color (Black), (Brown), (Gray)
Item Nos: F87131, 87132 & 87133

Now, this product is designed specifically to accentuate Panel Lines, particularly on Aircraft models although Armor and Figure modelers will doubtless be able to come up with some practical uses.

The product which is enamel based, comes pre-mixed allowing capillary action to do the rest when it's 'dropped' into a panel line. The three shades should cover most eventualities.

All good so far. Simple product with many possible applications. Excellent.

Unfortunately, due to the composition (enamel-based) there is some doubt as to whether it will ever actually reach our workbenches. Already, both Britain and the USA haev effectively 'banned' it and its likely Europe will follow suit.

Now, there are some pretty unpleasant solvents already available in every supermarket, Kwiki-Mart and hardware store which are on sale to the general public. You don't need an explosives permit, proof that you're not mixing home-made C4 in your mother's best saucepan or indeed a note from your mother that, YES, it really is to remove stains.

Why then does a paint-based product get the thumbs down from our government 'protectors'?

Yes, I really am THAT confused. More as it becomes available.

WHAT!!! Scott, are you sure???? If you drink it you might die!!! Oh man, I'm in big trouble. All this time I thought the whole 'paint' thing was an elaborate conspiracy to get my favorite beverage on the shelves here in California. Bummer. Rick

This seems to be just enamel based paint highly thinned out. One would think that the traditional method of using a dab of artist oils thinned with odorless turps works just as well. Cost is just a few pennies and availability is never an issue. Perhaps Tamiya should concentrate on getting its current paints, thinners, and glues relabeled and back into our hobby shops, rather then continuing to introduce products that most modelers don't need.

Joel I've never tried (and probably I'll never do) , but I agree with you. It doesn't seem to be a needful item

Remember, Tamiya's biggest customer base is in Japan and they continue to sell very well. As far as needless, does anyone "really" need Gunze's Mr. Dissolved Putty? But I know a lot of people that use it. -HK sends

Tamiya's Twitter feed said they hope to have paints back in the US by year end. It was a labeling thing and yes it was California from what I hear. Had to do with importing it since California is where it comes on Tamiya had to play by their rules.

And you know what the problem was... Not everything on the label was in English.. Nanny state indeed.

It (the paint) is available here in Australia (well, Queensland anyway) and I've tried a bit. Flows well but appears to dry fairly glossy (at least the black does). Regards Rob

Typical Nanny state in Uk, wonder they haven't locked up all modelmakers because we own Knives. Would it work over acrylic, or would it ruin the finish? I use either Windsor & Newton Artisan oils, they are water soluble & mean I don't need to sets of brushes, or Citidal inks or washes, the citidal washes come in handy when I only want a small amount of one colour and dont have to waste so much oil Si

Personally, I think it's o.k. when a manufacturer like Tamiya produces 'off-the-shelf' solutions like this. Yes, for many it's easier picking up an item like this in a Hobby Store and using it out the bottle. For years, I was using Windsor & Newton inks for fine-lining on aircraft (they've got an incredible color range) and then, like Simon, picked up some of the Citadel washes which worked equally well. What, in all this, is absurd, is once again, the nanny state telling us that we can't buy products like this when there are so many MORE dangerous products available all over the place..
