Jochen Vollert has informed Armorama of 6 new books hitting the market in mid-June from Tankograd Publishing.
The six new titles are;
World War One Special 1008
Feldluftschiffer
The German Balloon Corps and Aerial Reconaissance
When thinking about the battles fought in the trenches of the Great War, what comes to mind is first and foremost infantry, supported by tanks, artillery and airplanes. Yet another major arm of service also played a vital role that up to present day remained hidden behind the better-known services: the Feldluftschiffertruppe.

The Feldluftschiffer, or Feldluftschiffertruppe (balloon corps) provided extensive and often decisive reconnaissance of enemy troop movements and artillery positions, and guided the German forces' own artillery fire and infantry attacks.
The balloon corps itself was a weapon of the 19th century that was to play its most important role in the war of 1914-18. Never before and never after would it reach such fame. Without the balloon corps and other means of aerial reconnaissance the Imperial German Army would have been blind.
Describing the balloon types and tactics in hitherto unknown detail, this publication also shows the ground equipment and soldiers of the Feldluftschiffertruppe in photographs, almost all of which are seen here for the very first time.
This is the most comprehensive documentation published on a crucial asset of the Imperial German Army that undeservedly had been neglected for too long.
On 96 pages this publication is illustrated with 176 black&white photographs.

FENNEK
The Fennek Reconnaissance Vehicle in Modern German Army Service
As the German Bundeswehr reconnaissance troops' Luchs reconnaissance vehicle became obsolete it was high time to develop and procure a completely new armoured wheeled reconnaissance vehicle. Delivery of the first Fennek Reconnaissance Vehicle to the Bundeswehr at the German Armour School in Munster on 10 December 2003 can therefore be viewed as a milestone in the procurement of equipment for the Aufklärungstruppe. The first-production-lot vehicles included 178 Reconnaissance Vehicles as well as 24 Engineer Command and Reconnaissance Vehicles. An additional 4 Fennek Artillery Observer Vehicles were ordered as an urgent operational requirement, but later rebuilt. In parallel, the artillery developed two more Joint Fire Support Team (JFST) Fennek versions, of which 20 examples were fielded. Altogether, the Bundeswehr procured 226 Fenneks, some of which have since been destroyed during operations. This publication comprehensively describes the development and technology of the Fennek in all its variants.

NUCLEAR WINTER FTX
US Army Vehicles during the Cold War Exercises WINTER SHIELD I and II in 1960-61
In the early 1960s Germany was the centre of the Cold War and a nuclear clash of the superpowers on German soil was a realistic yet in the same way horrific scenario. The exercises Winter Shield I and Winter Shield II were conducted in February 1960 and 1961 and showed how a real nuclear winter-war would have been fought. Each exercise saw the participation of some 60,000 troops and about 15,000 vehicles. The use of nuclear weapons was given a decisive role in Winter Shield I, they were aimed at deterrence as the military forces in the East were getting stronger and stronger. Both exercises were conducted under the motto: "Train as you fight". Commanding officers were veterans of recently fought wars - US officers had seen action during the Korean War, many German commanders had gained their experience on the Eastern Front during World War Two. This publication describes the events and illustrates the motor pool of the US Army, ranging from World War 2 veterans to then most modern equipment such as the M103 Heavy Tank.

I am fascinated by the M10, but the German balloon corps book looks just as interesting. It looks like there is something for everyone here.

The thought of trying to haul out two M103s that are stuck up to the hips in soft muck on a dirt road in teh middle of winterm makes me cringe even 50 years later. Poor b@stards! Paul
