I want my funnies as funny as possible! I'm sure the carpet is best modeled in wood, potentially with actual twigs, if you can find them of a proper and consistent shape, so any attempt in styrene or resin would be tricky to get right. -Sean H.

Actually, I think that you are thinking of a fascine for crossing ditches. I think that the "carpet layer" held a roll of some fabric material that was acually laid down in front of the tank (and over which it drove) in order to keep from bogging in soft sand. I am definitely a Churchill novice, so perhaps someone else can confirm (I don't want to lead anyone astry through my ignorance). Dave

Pictures of this vehicle in Churchill Tank part 2 ( Ampersand Pub ) . Its a version of the Carpet Layer that was developed pre Dieppe . The D Day version had steel frame girders supporting the 10 ft drum with a roll of canvas reinforced by wood slats . Still an interesting release , might have to get one .

This one used a reinforced canvas type 'carpet' which rolled out under the tank creating a firm path for following vehicles across soft sand... LINK Fascine carriers, as mentioned correctly above, used a bundle of wood to fill a trench etc (Fascines date back even before WWI when British tanks used them).... It would have been nice if AFV Club had included wading stacks but they are a pretty simple design so not hard to scratch.... Gary
