Ok, finally plucked up the courage to get started. Figures are something I never do, so thanks for this campaign and it's encouragement.

Here are the figures I'm starting with. from Trumpeter:
http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/35th-scale/Models/WIP/2010_01120007.jpg
And different bits fo gear from my spares box:
http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/35th-scale/Models/WIP/2010_01120005.jpg
They'll be done in 3C desert camo with flak vests in woodland camo

Cheers,
Sean

Sean, make sure you use the "img" before and the other one with the "/img" after your picture url. Photobucket has this option ready to use in the lowest of the for boxes beneath your picture.

I have a change of plan. Instead of doing 4 North Vietnamese troops, I will go with Russian WW2 troops.... all 10 of them!

and the way they will be used;

Got some paint on...

Shirt is base of plain Red (acrylic) w/ shadows in Crimson (oil). Still wet, prob. another day or two to dry min. Then I'll highlight also w/ oil.

Chocolate-chip camo is all acrylic w/ base of Tan and mix of Burnt Umber & Burnt Sienna as brown. Spots are Black w/ Ivory. No oil yet.

I was a bit jealous taht you paint your troops so quickly and have so great progress so I had to do something with mine too.

This guy got few details painted (one of the straps will have to be re-painted into brown-leather) and got a black wash. In the meantime I also tried to paint his face but results were poor so I'll show it later. This weekend I will be working with his other equipment e.g. carbine, gasmask, straps, haversack etc.

This guy just got the basic painting.

Good advice, Matthew. I was going to say basically the same thing. There are some Windsor and Newton products that are available as drying agents. These also come in glossy or matt finish. Also, oil painters tend to use lindseed oil as a blending/mixing agent.

But the biggest thing is like Matt said- use acrylics as an underlayer and paint them up as much as you can before going to the oils. I am a bit of a novice I admit, but I have had some good results with this method. This also helps because if thinned down, or blended, sometimes the oils can be translucent- so it helps to have a good base that is already close to the color you want. So why go with oils? As an artist (been painting a long time, just not figures) I have to say that you can't beat the textures and tones that you can obtain with oils- and the fact that you have more time to work makes blending easier as well.

good luck!

Bill: U R Correct - Oil over Acrylic is the way to go.

More oil work (mostly on pants).

Used these colors - I only get Win & Nuet on colors I use alot otherwise I get the cheap oil paint.

Looks like this now - much more muted and more depth & range of color on the camo.

It looks better in person - the camera & blowing up the size makes it look much less blended than the human eye sees.

Next - belts and pouches.

Thanks for the tip, Bill!

Neo, your painting is coming along quite nicely, but I think the red is very bright. You also should check out the guys' left arm. I think it is too round around the elbow.

It has been over 10 years sense I have really done any building and painting. So here are my finished troops. The eyes aren't as keen as they used to be or the hands as steady. So here they are.
The driver with all his equipment.

The wounded, with all thier equipment, minus weapons.

A group shot of them.

They were painted using Model Master's,Vallejo's and Tamiya's acrylic paints. Does this classify for the complection of the campaign? This is the first one I had enlisted in so I am not sure how it goes.

Thomas, why not try to give the faces more depth and variation by adding washes and drybrushes?
With the washes you can show the deepr areas in the faces and reduce the size of the eyes in 1 or more strokes. Then some highlight acroos the higher areas and you will end up with a far more gratifying result!
If you keep the washes thin you can always remove them when your not satisfied with the looks.

As for me, my troops are ready for paint!
I put them together, changed them, cleaned and filled them up.

Here they are, all ligned up on my figurepaintingstation;

Thank you Ron I'll try that. I didn't want to try to much differnt stuff for fear of ruining them. I am basicly relearning the process all over again. Ben out of it for too many years. So the next ones hopefully will come out better.

I took the plunge into the deep, too....

I have taken the brush and painted my troops in their basecolours; Vallejo's Russian uniform for the uniforms, German camo. med. brown for the skin and ivory for the eyes. The boots are basecoated in Andrea's flat black.

The next steps are finishing the skintones, for which I plan a little variety by adding some asians.
After this I can go wild in greenshades for the uniforms!

Yeehah!!

Here's my first post for the campaign. These are the figures I'll be working on. First, the tank crewmen.

They are, from left to right, modified DML, 2 Warriors, Alpine Miniatures, and another Warriors figure. The DML figure has a modified Hornet head, the first 2 Warriors figures have Alpine Miniatures heads, and the other two are stock. Next up, the infantry figures.

The twelve man infantry squad is made up of Tamiya and DML figures from various sets. All of the figures received some modifications, such as Hornet heads, new legs/boots, new/repositioned arms, new uniform details, and one full body conversion.
I hope to get some painting done and the pics posted soon.

While this guy is too big for the campaign, I thought I would still post a pic or two of him. The figure is hollow cast and will have glowing red eyes once complete thanks to a super bright LED in his neck. It looks eerie when lit, but oh so cool. My 1/35 figures are waiting on paint, and are next in line for painting. Thanks, "Q"
ps. The black portion will be finished as chain mail

OK, here's where I'm at with mine:

Desert camo done, woodland half-way there. Still have to start the hands and faces. Then the whole thing will get an oil wash.

Lots of kit and weapons ready but havn't decided on how OTT to go with those.

Thanks for looking,
Sean

Inspired by the work on here I'm going to join in with some pilots if that is OK
The 1:48 Tamiya Mosquito crew. and the D.520 pliot. No conversions to the figures.
Just going to try a blending method outlined in Shep Paine's dio book.

I've never dabbled in 1/48 before but just looking at the figures it is going
to be a lot more satisfying than just a "dunk and drybrush".
