Hello! Just found my way to the forums section. Still figuring my way around here.
I'm in for the Modeling a Photo Campaign. I pulled a photo from the warwheels.net website-- all apologies to David Haugh who gets the credit for it on that site. http://www.warwheels.net/images/m151a1armdV3HAUGH1.jpg

These guys looked very bored and very real, packed into that little clown car of an armored MUTT.
Thanks,
Sean.

Gentlemen, Some nice work going on in here! Since serving in the military and finding quite a few fun, alternative uses for the plethora of equipment available to me, I love to see it when someone else did or does it. I've always liked this photo even though they were actually trying to find a boring military application:

Build coming along-- I've got the base kit almost as far as it will go. Adding the armor from a template provided on the warwheels website entry for the armored MUTT.

(also I'm still testing how to get a photo in a forum posting.)
Thanks,
Sean.

Ok, sorry for being absent for a while - and for the lack of pics!
The turret's done, the body is still waiting for green stripes and washes

The tiger's done! Only some weathering on the running gear to do. Test shots on the base (don't pay attention to the stuff drewn on it)

The two buildings seen in photos (the piece of cork was glued on the base to keep the tiger on the right angle)

The buildings are in place, the tiger's running gear is dirty, and some putty was applied as a base for rubble (I'm gonna need a lot of rubble for this one!)

I'm planning to modify the rust on the exhaust. Next step will probably be adding rubble.

Joris,
You could still add that extra track for protection across the front. Otherwise, the guns and tow cable are hanging at the same angles as the photo-- bent fenders-- nice work. Have you thought about trying to really hunch down the suspension in the back somehow? I have no idea how.
What really strikes me are your brick walls-- that's fantastic!! Your camoflage worked out really well too, to my eye. Excellent paint work all around. I have to learn how to do washes like you. I can't wait to see how this develops.
Thanks,
Sean.

Hey Sean,
I indeed thought about the extra tracks in front, but there's a problem - the Revell kit has only 5 spare tracks, while I need 10. Well, I'll keep thinking.
The brick wall was made from 3 layers of 1mm cardstock. I drew the brick pattern on it, then cut the lines out (by making a cut on each side of the line and scrapping the middle out). The procedure was really, REALLY painful - no pain, no gain. I then painted it with Revell #37 and painted a few bricks in different shades, following with a coat of household putty (the one used to patch walls - easy to get, easy to use), which was cleaned off, leaving only as much as accumulated in the gaps. Finally, a brown wash once it all dried and a coat of flat clear.
The whole tank was kinda pinwashed - I keep a small jar with prepared black or brown diluted gouache (opaque watercolor). And I simply wash everything till it looks right.

Cheers,

P.S. Did I mention I (still) don't have an airbrush? That's why I decided to stick to 1/72 scale

A little more progress, in between projects around the house. I'm making the prominent bulletproof glass windows now, cut from an old cassette tape case (I don't think magnetic recording tape is coming back ). I'm building up the brackets from strip styrene, to form an L channel around each.

P.S. I don't have an airbrush either.

If you don't know how campaigns work, check out the thread titled "For Those New to Armorama Campaigns". The duration of any campaign is listed on the page for that campaign, as well as the rules. Click on the "CAMPAIGNS" tab near the top of any Armorma page then click on the name of the campaign you are interested in. This campaign ends on February 6.

I didn't like the way the gunmount pedestal looked too far forward, so I tore it from the standard location to move it back. The gentleman over the driver's seat has plenty of elbow room in the photo, not so when I built the gun mount between the seats per the kit instructions. I have profile pictures of different jeeps that show it mounted back from the seats, so I'll do that.
The radio antenna in the kit didn't match the photo enough either, so I resolved to rebuild that too.

More to come.

Well here is my first in-progress photo of my project and the Tamiya 1/35 B.M. W. R75 that I am using.

I have the base started as well. I just need to paint all the cobblestones. The kitten is there as well, its just hard to see. It is between the figure and the motorcycle.

I should have another picture to post soon.

Harv, nice progress. Your components seem to match the photo well. Now just to bring it all together.
Here's where I stand, done with fabrication on the M151, and ready for paint:

Then to decaling and weathering and on to the figures.
This being my first campaign, and seeing 40 or so of us signed up, I had expected more forum posts-- I'm not posting too much, am I? I guess we'll see in the coming months. There's plenty of time left in this campaign.
Thanks,
Sean.

Thank you Sean, I appreciate the comments. It should be a fairly simple little vignette to build. The only real problem will be converting the figure. That really isn't my specialty. Oh well, no better time to practice I guess. Your project is coming along nicely as well.

Nope, keep on posting. If you keep on enlisting in campaigns you will see that there are always people who enlist who never take part in the campaign. Sometimes out of 60 to 80 people who enlist there might be around 15 to 20 that actually finish. So keep on posting your updates.

Thanks again,

Thanks again, Harv, will do.
I'm treading in unfamiliar territory with figures too. I'm overlapping campaigns here, so I'll start my figures after the September 1 start date for that one.

Decided to scrap my original idea, and go for this [img][img] now all I have to do is locate the OOP Warriors figure, that looks almost exact like that (just a head swap needed)

the jeep is at a good point, now to work those figures. Here I've sorted them for best match.
In painting the white band under the windshield, my masking from the night before had lifted a little, unnoticed, so I accidentally misted the front with white paint. After that cures, I'll mask and repaint the olive drab.

cheers,
Sean.

Here is-progress photo #2 of my entry.

MOTORCYCLE
I removed the molded on license plate and brackets from the front fender and scratch-built new brackets and moved them back from their original position so that the decal will fit on the fender. I also scratch-built fender supports for the front fender. I added a map case near the headlight to match the photo. I filled in some gaps with green putty and painted everything with a base coat of German Gray.

RIDER
I cut the figure in half at the waist and turned the torso to the right and made him lean forward. I cut the left arm in half at the elbow and moved the forearm towards the body. I also cut off the left hand and turned it so that the palm was facing to the right so that the hand would hold the rifle. I cut off the molded on rifle sling and ammo pouches. I am also going to have to remove the belt as it sits too high since I filled the gap in between the upper and lower torsos with putty. I also cut off the head and turned it to the right so that he is looking at the kitten.

That is all for now. I should have another in-progress photo soon.

Thanks,

Harv

Harv, your figure is very realistically positioned. I'm just realizing how difficult working with figures is, to angle all those components just right. Anything too long or short or bent in the wrong place for a human immediately draws the eye. And when you've cut pieces into smaller ones, they only get harder to work with and glue and hold.
You've made a LOT of cuts and splices and the progress looks great.
Also, not to reveal the magician's secrets ("Ignore the man behind the curtain."), but is your base made from a jar lid? It has more detail than a wooden one. I like that idea.

Thank you Sean.

I appreciate your comments. It did take a lot longer to get everything lined up like I wanted it. There were lots of "special words of encouragement" muttered while trying to get the arms and the left hand to all stay exactally where I wanted them!! I hope everything will look right when I get the green putty trimmed down and everything sanded.

No secret about the base. It is a peanutbutter jar lid, Wal-Mart brand to be exact. I use them a lot as I like the size and the look of them. I just paint them the color of choice and that is all. If you want to look in my gallery you will see some of my other projects where I have used them.

Thanks again.

Tim,

Sorry, but I will have to drop out of this campaign! I've bit off more than I can chew at the moment. I started a build log for another campaign that I enlisted in and its taking up a lot more time than I had anticipated. I'll stop by from time to time to check out the builds here.

Tat,
Nice start on your project. Enjoyed the historical links that pertain to your build.

Joris,
Your 72nd scale build is really taking on the look of your photo example!

Sean,
Lots of scratch building on that Mutt . . . I like it!

Randy,
looking forward to seeing more progress on your build, it really looks good so far . . . extremely creative to boot. Wal-mart peanut butter jar lid, YES!

I know that I have missed a few of you but I'll be back.

Decaling and lettering is turning into a disaster. My scrap box picks and kit decals aren't matching too well. My dry-transfer lettering is too wide. I tried to paint some lettering, narrower, but I'll have to go over the white with more green (see I've sanded through the base paint back to white plastic on the bumper, too).
I settled with "U.S.A." on the hood from my old decals, instead of tracking down and buying "U.S. Army" somewhere, and I'm doubting that too.

So, after a pause, I'm almost ready to drop back and make the fixes before starting forward again.

Thank you for the feedback Eddy. I haven't done much else with my project. I am hoping to maybe get some more done this weekend. That is if I don't get called in to work.

Sorry, no match, but a very generous offer.
Now it's time to seal the Mutt with dullcoat and add the lights and windows, then I can focus on populating the scene. I'm quickly bogging down with the guys. You figure-makers have many skills that I'm realizing I still need to practice.
-Sean.
P.S.: still working on using all those ridiculous emoticons.
