Pretty cool pic, Tom.
Seeing the D-Day preparations, I wonder how the battle turned out for the crew of Hurricane here. Seeing the wading gear-- did any of these make it to the beach or beyond, or did every one swamp and sink that day? Bravery like that really gets me.
Sean.

Sean, there's a second snap of Hurricane getting an engine change dated Aug 17 '44, but who knows how much longer it lasted?... Like most of the waterproofed tanks it probably landed dry-shod after the initial fighting - there were tanks with wading gear driving off the Mulberry harbours quite a few days after the 6th.

@ Harv - Excellent job! You've captured the photo in 3D. You have one heck of a mini masterpiece in your collection. You could place a copy of the photograph in the background next to your build for displaying at home for example.

Thank you Eddy, I appreciate the kind words very much. I do wish that I could have found a better kitten figure. But I guess the one I used worked out. I have thought about framing a copy of the photo and attaching it to the back of the base. I made a sniper vignette based on a photograph and I should do the same thing for it also.

Thanks again.

Hi all,

I know it's my own fault for leaving it so late to start, but I seriously doubt I'll be able to finish my build by 6 Feb! (That's what I get for cutting plastic with only a month to go...) I'll post some pics of progress anyway...

getting pretty close to done.
Still got some fiddling about to do, and the figure needs more attention. While I seem to do alright with the vehicles, my skill at figures is somewhat lagging...

I promised some progress shots, so here is my build of "H-" Hurricane" as seen loading up for the D-Day crossing. I didn't get much done this weekend, so I seriously doubt I'll finish on time. (I had hoped to finish the plastic work, so next weekend could begin painting.)

The base kit is the Italeri M4 "Marines", from which I am using the lower hull & wading trunks. The upper hull is from Tasca's Sherman III (35018), and the turret is Tasca too. I wanted to use some Dragon bogie frames with the Italeri suspension, but put them away somewhere really safe! So instead I will use an AFV Club set, and had to carve off the mounting bosses from the hull. The rear plate comes from an old MP Authen-I-Kit set, and the white engine deck is good old Evergreen...

Well, I guess we call this one as done as I'm going to get with it. I think I captured some of the vibe OK, but still have a long ways to go in the technique department, as well as the photography. Still, that's what makes it challenging and fun, eh ? Thanks for coming up with this campaign !

Hi all,

My Sherman is coming along nicely (I'll grab pics soon...) but is still naked plastic and won't get done by 6 Feb. Any chance this campaign will get extended?

Hi all,

I said I'd post pics, so here they are! First up is the classic shot of H-2 loading up for D-Day:

I still have some work to do on that big lump of tarped stowage before I can paint it, and of course I need to do a base.

The resin gun covers are from Tank Workshop, and could have been modelled on the photo of H-2! I waterproofed the hull ventilators with glued tissue, and the grouser vents with putty. There is a bead of bostik around the engine deck, and a rough weld seam on the turret. The nose casting was textured old-school with glue and stippling.

I lucked out with the TC figure, building him from spares to match the pic almost perfectly! The turret still needs stowage rails and bags attached.

By the way, it's been mighty quiet here for a month now...

Sure it's quiet here-- we're watching your progress with bated breath.
Really though, you're doing a great effort and the detail is impressive! I'm sure this would be one of those cases where the Campaign leader can give you a ribbon after the official end date (next week, isn't it?).
Thanks for posting!

Sean,

Thanks for the kind words! The campaign does indeed end next weekend, just as I start throwing paint over all the lovely details, so I hope you're right about leniency... I reckon it may take a few weeks to finish completely.

(I'm really looking forward to doing the half-wet effect from the rain that makes the photo so interesting. Early June 1944 was a bit squally, and clearly this tank got showered as it waited to load up.)

...so squally that Rommel was confident enough to take some vacation time and went home for his wife's birthday, as we all know.

Hey everybody, Some really great stuff in here. Harv, Where did you get that photo? Great subject and nice execution!
Peter, Your weathering and groundwork are beautiful!
Anyway, here's a picture of my subject matter again

As usual, I'm pushing the deadline due to events out of my control (really!). So far, I've finished the TK and base minus some touch-up. The carpet monster swallowed the MG barrel so I obviously need to replace that.

The troops are kind of close too, pictures later. The one thing I discovered AFTER fitting my Polish Winter Sportsmen with their skis? The base is too small. Oh well, too late now.

Charlie,
Awesome subject-- Polish troops on skis. (My sister's in-laws are Polish AND "Skis", ha ha) I'm glad you found us again! Yeah, nature is really playing havoc this year, besides the usual real-life stuff that keeps us away from our builds.
I really like how you captured the slushy spray off the tracks-- really gives it motion and matches the photo.
thanks for posting!

Thank you for the kind comments Charlie. I appreciate it.

The photo was actually in an e-mail that I received once that had several of those joke motivational posters attached and the blitzkrieg one was one of them. I thought it was kind of a cool little scene. When I saw the idea for this campaign I new right away it was the picture I wanted to use. It didn't turn out exactly like I wanted it to but I guess it is close.

Thanks again,

Randy
