Gary that little Sherman is looking great
I am making some slow progress on my Puma as I paint the accessories and tools on my StuG I also go back and hit the Puma with some of the paint that I'm using
This is what it was looking like this morning
Found the figure lurking behind my paintbrushes and thought he would look good as the commander

Jeff, you're right, the historical factor is important in this campaign, your Priest off course qualifies, and the unit is perfect... So about the nick. Hmm, let me think here. Well of course there were a lot more priests and other afv's for that matter then that we have pictures at our disposition. So, you're what If priest, could in fact be a real priest... Can't you find a list of nicks used in the unit?
I don't really have a problem with it actually, just try to make it as accurate as possible.
Dave
I've been looking into the nickname thing for the past few days, and I'm having a hard time finding any 58th Priests with any markings period. Looks like censors removed pretty much all markings in photos. But I could be wrong, looks like the one solider with his back to the camera is wearing a later uniform.
Anyway here is some progress on the priest. Really fun build so far. There is no glue holding those sub assemblies together, very nice tight fit.
Cheers

Quoted TextGreat work there Gary !
I still haven't joined this one, I have to finish one or rwo builds first, then ask Jeff's permission, see with Dave if my choice fits, then ask Jeff's again -- --
Thanks John! You better tread lightly John, the Jeff's can get pretty onry.
Gary
Nope, not anymore. A few self-appointed rivet counters and model kit reviewers have ruined it for me so no more humor.
So, feel free at taking practise swings like this and have some free target practise all you want.
Apparently I have the thicker skin.

Well, my project arrived via FEDEX today. I am going to jump into the fray with a 1/35th scale AFV Club Churchill AVRE and I will be using the kit markings to depict an AVRE from 5th Assault Regt., Sword Beach, 06.06.44. Reference for the markings is attached as are the kit photos.

Ian: welcome a board and good luck with your build! I'll be doing it to one day, so I'll be watching closely!
Jeff: don't worry to much about it, have fun with your priest, and I'm sure in the end it will look like a DDay priest. anyway, if you're having fun doing the research, then don't stop doing it!
Gary: great looking build as always!
On a side note, I ordered Sherman wading stacks with the Tank Workshop, but unfortunately they were a bit damaged when they arrived. So, I contacted them and they immediately sent me replacement items, no,questions asked! Thumbs up for TWS service!
I'm still doubting what I'm gonna build, too much ideas! but now, I'm thinking of doing balaclava, a Sherman III with wading stacks. I have everything for it, except the tracks...
Have fun and a great weekend!
Dave

Gary, no "buddy" I am not BSing anybody. And verbal jousting is one thing but this is completely different. I think it's a crock telling one modeler that a kit he announced is inaccurate and cannot be used for this Campaign (even though an attempt was to be made at "accurizing" many issues) and then allowing another to 'slide' on features of his finished model that are not historically correct is WRONG and unfair as well as being biased. Then to further attempt to humiliate the offended modeler with slight humor ... permission?
Sit and think about it before a reply is made. Although it's not a modeling contest, the incorrect finished model should be either corrected or disqualified. There's more than enough time since it was rushed to be finished, but in the meantime the aforementioned kit cannot be built at all?
That's the BS. Rebuttal?
(BTW ... it took me 2 hours to get this up and posted. I amazed that the website is working now)

Jeff,
I went back through the thread. I think you got defensive pretty quickly with people who were trying to HELP you. Nobody knows how much you know personally about Shermans. You also never stated HOW you planned on converting the Italeri kit into a suitable D-day tank.
People don't always read 10 pages of thread before replying, and you need to cut them some slack if they respond to something that's already been hashed out 2 pages prior.
Anyway... how's the little turret/bunker thing coming?

Defensive? Why sure, why not? But that ship has long since sailed and I am trying to keep it simple and not personal. If one is told no then it should be pretty much all included, not just because it's already built. And I did outline the changes, just wasn't going to change the hull angle. It's not my fault the kit has errors but should be allowed if wader tanks were used.
Anyway, put yourself in my shoes (sine you made it your business) and you would feel the same way as I do then to top it all off, I am to be made fun of? Nope, not gonna happen as all I was doing was pointing out an issue, but you should just model on and not make it any of your concern as I am just voicing an opinion and the "turret/bunker thing" called a diorama will probably not get built now.
So there's the slack!

Hey guys, cool it down. This is a group build, not a contest, nobody will get sacked or promoted, actually nothing will happen if you're the best or the worst. It's just about sharing a build, getting info from each other and having fun in our hobby.
Okay, so Jeff, nobody is mocking with you or insulting you or doing whatever that could be interpreted in a negative way.
Is this about Gary's Hurricane? If so, there a big difference about a piece of appliqué on the turret or a wrong Sherman version. If i didn't came across a picture of Hurricane's right side, I wouldn't even knew he didn't had the appliqué on the turret. Do you want me to disqualifi someone because he follows the instructions and they say to put appliqué on the turret because most M4's had it?
That would be rivet counting, and just be plain stupid. The idea of this campaign is to build a model that was in Normandy around D-Day of one of the units that fought in these initial days. It's not about building a photo. Like I've been consisted about in the whole thread. An M4A3 was not in Normandy before June 10th 1944. And you wanted to do an M4A3...
There were some other guys here to who asked about a certain model which didn't fit the time frame and they choose something else. So, if you want to build a jagdtiger, I'll say have fun, but it won't fit this campaign. If you want to build a firefly of the 27th armoured brigade and you put appliqué on it, but in fact this tank didn't had appliqué, then it's up to you to fix it or not, but not a reason to be disqualified.
Just like I'm not gonna make a big deal of the nick name on the priest... Because the priest and the unit are both perfect for the campaign.
Anyway, I think I've been fair and consisted to everyone, if you dont think I am or if you feel I'm biased in some way, that's your prerogative.
And about the verbal jousting, Gary was having fun and enjoying the conversations with you...
So, can we call this a day, and further enjoy the weekend and our hobby. I have two fireflies which I try to make better but seem to make worse all the time.
Dave

Jeff,
Robs right of course, there were no M4A3s in Normandy at that time, so your up to a serious modification, kit bashing or just choose another subject. :-)
But you have plenty of time to decide. :-)
Dave
To my defense the kit reads that it's an M4 ... not a M4A3 which I did elude that I could have changed that to make it fit, all but the hull angle.
So again, what wader Shermans can fit or be allowed? I have many Sherman kits to build but I am not going to pick up a history book.
I can take the stacks out of the Italeri kit and put them on the kit that the Campaign Leader allows, not from the peanut gallery. LOL
Just let me know.

Jeff,
There are so many Sherman's allowed. I myself will also build charmer and balaclava - both are Sherman III, early and mid versions. I'll use the Tasca kits for them.
If you want to use the wading stacks from the italeri, you'll be looking at the us Sherman's, since they used different stacks then the Brits.
You could use tascas m4a1 for example. Or dragons Sherman m4 Normandy. Both can be build oob with the right decals that fit the campaign.
I don't know all models from heart, but about any Sherman m4, a1, a2 or a4 will do. Us and Brit versions. Tascas m4a4 will also build in a perfect model. Or you can go the firefly route, all of tascas will apply.
I'm referring to Tasca all the time, since I know those best. But even tamiyas m4 will do... Dragons m4a2 will not be a good idea, since that's a pto version which is different from the one the Brits used.
So, to ramp up choose about any Sherman m4, m4a1, I, II, III, V, Vc.
If you need any more help, just ask....

Dave,
Okay a Mini Craft M4A1, M34 mantlet, one piece trans cover, small hatch, open spoked wheels, late track skids, T48 tracks, low bustle turret with the Italeri stacks?
Vehicle ID or division matter? Decals look to be a choice between 5th or 8th Army. My camera isn't going to pick that up too clearly but I can go after some Bison decals, whatever would work.
I'd rather build a Sherman as a model than the dio just for space sakes as it will get moved around quite a bit as I have many projects going at once and I am trying to build a paint booth as well. I just don't ever seem to find the time to get back to it as model building and work take all the extra time.
This "old kit" looks to have been at one time a motorized offering as it has a metal axle set up to secure the sprockets but I held onto it because it looked fairly accurate and is an A1, my favorite Sherman version.
The goal is to build-down the collection and not add to it too much for these Campaign builds. Also, my contention was only to find out where the line was drawn on historically correct and it never was aimed at Gary's build, but merely to question it. I hope that he and I are okay as we did clear it up in a few PM's and I do hope that is the same with everyone else here. I know this would have been cleared up so easily in person but the Internet has no face or expressions to offer.
So, is the kit good?

The goal is to build-down the collection and not add to it too much for these Campaign builds. Also, my contention was only to find out where the line was drawn on historically correct and it never was aimed at Gary's build, but merely to question it. I hope that he and I are okay as we did clear it up in a few PM's and I do hope that is the same with everyone else here. I know this would have been cleared up so easily in person but the Internet has no face or expressions to offer.
So, is the kit good?

Jeff,
Your M4a1 early is perfect, you'll probably need other decals, but bison has a sheet for m4a1's in Normandy, so then your set.
And probably someone has a spare set of decals for an m4a1 in Normandy, I might actually have one spare. Ask around, and I'm sure someone would be willing to help you out.
I'm glad everything is worked out now, so, we can all move forward and have fun.

Like these?

It gives 2 examples for the A1 BUT, were they involved in the D Day Landings? And no drawings or plates to use as a guidline with them.
