Hey Paul,

Your Marder III M was surely around on DDay, from which unit are you gonna build it?

And of course, welcome a board!

Dave

PS oops, I saw I already replied.

Hi Dave,

A slight change of plan, the Marder will now be modelled as a vehicle from Pzj.Abt.243 and is vehicle 112. This unit was active on D+1 around Sainte-Mere-Eglise and was in combat with elements of the 82 Airborne and the 746th Tank Battalion. Here is a photo of the vehicle in question and it appears to be in Dunkelgelb with olive-green and red-brown thin lines....

All the best,

Paul

More progress shots. Construction is basically finished.

Overall...

Surface texture added with Mr. Surfacer. Some added weld detail here and there, including on the bustle extention for the radio. I will also be added the 25 pounder ammo boxes on the top of the bustle as seen in photos of tanks from the 24th Lancers.

Other side and pistol port. Can see where I added footman loops out of styrene rod.

Better shot of footman loops. Added the small cap to where the searchlight was, but didn't add chain. Need to see if I have any PE chain in the spares box.

A pile of stuff to be added. The figures are the figure from the kit, and the kit figure from the Tamiya Cromwell. The head on the left is from Alpine, and I'll be making a resin copy of that. Also Tasca flimsy cans, and some resin from Legends for tarps, jerry cans, and whatnot.

It's coming together...

Yes indeed Jesse! It is coming together nicely. The figure detail is nice too. Jesse, I wood love an SBS on casting the head. I have been wanting to learn how to cast small parts like that and i just dont have a clue how. Maybe a list of materials as well. Whatdya think?

Hi Marc,

I asked the question on the Missing Lynx Axis forum and got a very detailed answer from one of their correspondents, Niels Henkemans, including lots of photographic evidence. Unfortunately it is mostly copyrighted and for private use only so I can't share it with you, but I have details for StuG IIIs and StuH IIIs that were in action during the period prescribed. So when I have finished the Marder I will be doing one of those as a second build. The photograph can be found in the Osprey book from their Campaign series, No 104 D-Day (2) - Utah Beach and the US Airborne Landings. Hope this is of use to you.

All the best,

Paul

Well, that sucks.

I really enjoy reading the battle histories of units.
So many books, so little money!!

@Paul, nice information in those links. I've been looking for some marking schemes for my M5. I don't know the exact vehicle I am depicting so I cannot be precise, but I was hoping to get the general markings scheme correct for the 746th. I have read a couple of places that the 746th was kind of all over the place with its markings and I haven;t seen anything on their M5s. One of the linked pictures has an M5 and that might be one. Anyway, I'll have to go back through the links and see if there is something that identifies that Stuart.

Hello Gentlemen,

I have a question for whom ever can set me right. The instruction sheet for the Tamiya 1/48 M4 Sherman "Hurricane" shows to have a two tone camo With XF-62 and XF-64. However the D-Day pic looks like the solid green with the dark or black border around the base of the turret. Would the crew have applied camo in the field that soon after landing or are the instruction showing a camo used later in the campaign? Just want to make sure i paint it accurately. Thanks fellas.

Gary, would have been OD everywhere. The black around the turret base is water proofing. From what I've been able to determine, the first camo after D-Day would have been the black that was added right before Operation Cobra, which would be after this particular campaign.

Hi,

I have made a start on my Marder, I am hoping to get the Nuts & Bolts book for the vehicle, so I will just be doing bits until I have a good reference for detailing the kit. I have started by adding the metal barrel. It wasn't too bad an exercise, just took about an hour to get it sorted. There will be more detail on the gun as soon as I get the info, but the barrel is fitted nicely and that is a good start. Here are the pictures...

The gun provided by UM, not at all bad, but I prefer to replace all my barrels with metal ones. The main reason is they don't snap like plastic ones do and they look good as well.

The RB barrel for the Marder...

Here I have separated the breech from the kit barrel...

The breech drilled out to take the metal barrel....

The barrel fitted....

The parts for mounting the barrel....

The barrel assembly completed, all the plastic parts on the metal barrel were carefully removed from the original barrel...

The forward rest has a strap running over the barrel, to recreate it I used lead foil...

The strap attached and the complete assembly..

Well that's it for now, I will try to get some more done over the next few days while I await the arrival of my book.

All the best,

Paul

Hello Gentlemen,

Sal - The puma build looks awesome! Looking forward to buil mine. I will refer to your build regularly.

Paul - Nice job on the barrel. Lookng forward to more.

I have completed the build and now it time to PAINT!!! But first, to let anyone who builds this 1/48 sherman, carefull with the tracks. they are about a half link short exactly on both sides after completeing. They are very easy to build but now ill have to find a couple links per side and cut and space them in a area not so noticeable. Anyways here it is before primer.

Great looking build Gary!

Does anybody know where to get t54 tracks? Preferably in vynil or else, easy workable ones? I don't have too much patience for tracks.

I'm gonna build balaclava, with lower wading stacks - just received the resicast ones - I have the archer transfers and the Tasca Sherman III kit. But balaclava has t53 tracks, so this I don't have yet....

Thanks!

Dave
