Thanks guys! I've had that kit for a long time.

I might even as a side project go ahead and build me a Sherman tank used on D-Day, with waders AND maybe a DD Tank as well. I'm really interested in the DD big hatched A1's with the 75MM gun and high bustle turret.

First of all ... any objections from the peanut gallery?

It'll be interesting to see anyone who thinks I'm wrong on this one.

If you do a DD, I'll buy you a beer.

Guys,

Maybe we should make a list of where you get wading gear and DD add ons, even with some first hand info, if any...

I'm also looking for wading gear for the Dragon M4 and would love to add the lower stacks to my Tasca Sherman III.

So, what do we have already:

1/48

- Black Dog, Sherman wading gear, 1/48

1/35

- Tank workshop, Sherman wading gear
- Aber, Cromwell and Centaur wading gear
- "Marines" Shermans from both Italeri and Academy, just for the wading gear, since M4A3

If you know others, or have more info on them, I'll add it to this post.

Thanks!

YUP!

You would be the one to talk to about DD Tanks ... and Shermans. Something I get so inspired about and want to add to my little collection.

When the smoke clears one day, I want one in 1/16th. It would be a bit expensive so I must put more of a dent in want I already have before I try to convince someone of my cash flow problem. But, in the meantime 1/35th is the ticket.

I need to do something with this Italeri kit. Either rob parts off of it and do some kit bashing ... I don't know. Hmmmm, I do have an A1 with small hatches and the M34 mantlet and I believe the low bustle? Need to research that one first. An A1 wader? (just thinkin' out loud)

Hi Tom,

Welcome a board! Looks like a great build you'll be doing!

From which kit are you gonna start?

Dave

Not sure yet, but I expect an Academy hull will be involved, just for the correct diesel engine access plates in the floor. It'll be a "spares-box special", with a lot of sheet plastic for the superstructure, so the only really recognisable bits I need are the correct horizontal-roller bogies.

A friend leant me a book with scale plans in it for all the main panels, so it'll be a fun conversion!

By the way, here's a D-Day themed spares-box special I did for an earlier campaign:

Is there a reliable distributor of Black Dog products in the U.S.?

Dave,

In 1/35 you can add the "marines" Shermans from both Italeri and academy to your list - the tanks are both 47-degree M4A3s not seen on D-Day (or indeed in any of the markings provided...), but are cheap enough to buy just to rob the wading gear for other builds!

@Tom, that build is awesome! I'm sure we're gonna learn a lot from you here! Honored to have yo with us.

@Gary, I buy most of my stuff from Luckymodel.com, and they have worldwide free shipping for Black Dog.

Hi Gary,

The trunks, lower hull, and tranny are all from Italeri's wading Shermie, with suitable modifications to get it all to fit. The upper hull is a left-over Tasca part, as is the turret. The bogies were AFV Club (never again! they're a nightmare...) with Italeri wheels. The grey resin waterproofed gun and MG are TWS parts - well worth the cost! I built it for the previous Model a Photo campaign, so details are in that thread if you search for it. (Pics are still in my Gallery here on the Big A, if you want to see the build-up...)

Dave, My Great Uncle was Sgt. Cullen Clark Jr. with the 82nd, Company E 505PIR under Lt. Peddicord. They had been scattered in the jump and their group was an assortment of paratroops, including some from the 101st. They were trying to make it to Ste. Mere-Eglise

I think I'd like to focus on that meeting of the paras with the armor. Imagine they had been stumbling through the dark and what it must of felt like to find friendly armor.

I just have to find out which unit the tanks were with and what they were exactly.

Hey,

Let's try to help out here:

Quoted Text

D-Day: "At 2100 hours 100 gliders landed with artillery, engineers, and special troops. Seaborne elements set sail at 0645 from BRISTOL except for a task force consisting of Company C, 746th Tank Battalion; the 1st Platoon, Troop B, 4th Cavalry Squadron; and elements company F, 3d Battalion (originally 2d Battalion, 401st Glider Infantry), 325th Glider Infantry. This task force landed on Utah Red Beach at 1400 hours and proceeded inland with the mission of contacting the Division near STE. MERE EGLISE."
"Company F, 3d Battalion, supporting Company C, 746th Tank Battalion, landed on Utah Red Beach at 1400, de-waterproofed vehicles and moved inland at 1600 to make contact with the Division. Heavy artillery, mortar and small arms fire held up this task force at crossroads 363933. Two tanks were knocked out. The remainder of the regiment prepared to take off from airports in England."
D+1 "Company F, 3d Battalion in support of Company C, 746th Tank Battalion, and the 1st Platoon, Troop B, 4th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, assisted the 8th Infantry in its attack towards STE. MERE EGLISE from the west at 0630 hours and made contact with gliderborne elements of the 325th by 0900. The 325th's regimental strength at the close of the day was approximately 85 per cent."

So, the the 746th tank battalion would be a very good candidate.

Dave, thanks for the information about the incident. I got a copy of my Great Uncle's account from my grandmother earlier today. The account was for the 15th year anniversary of D-Day and was for a series of articles for Reader's Digest and for a book by Cornelius Ryan (The Longest Day?).

Anyway it's a neat little read. He refers to the US tanks as "a tank infantry column from the 4th Inf Div that had come in from the landing". The paras mounted the tanks to link up with the other paras at Ste. Mere-Eglise. And the firefight happened near a crossroads that the paras had dug in at to defend. According to the account, Lt Peddicord requested three light tanks to go ahead to recon. Ad that's when it hit the fan.

I think it'll be pretty safe to go with a M5 Stuart from 746th Tank Battalion. My take from the account is that my Great Uncle and Peddicord were pretty good friends...he was his Sgt and that was their third combat jump. I want to go with a scene where the paras have linked up with the tanks and are mounting up.

I'm glad you reminded me of the Tank Workshop there Dave on your wader question thread, they have a lot of sweet stuff.

I'll keep them in mind for future Sherman builds but in the meantime I got some items for my halftrack.

If anyone needs update or conversion parts for armor, they are the ticket!

Let's get this party started...

I broke into the box last night after spending probably an hour trying to figure out which kit in the stash I wanted to do next. This one doubles as a fun campaign, as well as qualifying for the theme of the upcoming AMPS show in Columbia, South Carolina. Of course, due to that schedule, this build is going to have to be relatively quick, and therefore simple.

I've got all the wheels, drive sprockets, and idelers cleaned up last night. I'm using the old Formations Tasca suspension spacers to just speed up the build. And I've got 3 of the bogies units built up. Hopefully get a couple of hours in today, and at least finish the other 3 bogies.

Hello Dave,
am I allowed to enlist although the campaign has started?
If so I would like to build a StuG III G of the 12th Sturmgeschütz-Brigade, that was just south of St.Lo on the 6.June´44. At the moment I know only that the 12th pulled back on the 10.June with one remaining StuH from 248 reported StuG´s. I´m sure I can find some markings somewhere, if they were still used of course.
