The Tamiya M4a3 doesn't have the motorization holes. You'll have to close in the hull above the tracks though.

I think there's a page with templates for the sponson fillers on the Archer website? You just print them out stick them to some sheet styrene and cut them out

EDIT: here it is Sherman sponson template

Pat, thanks for the link for the templates.

Torsten, I usually just use sheet styrene for the sponsons.

The M4 RC with Caballero markings; maybe Tamiya has a separate mold for the RC hull?

Hey guys. Finally just got my internet, phone, and cable back. Never lost our electric which was amazing. I live in Suffolk county Long Island, and we're trying to recover day by day from Hurricane Sandy.

I really want to do the PTO Flamethrower with the wooden side panels. But... I can't find what I need!

I could grab a standard M4 and maybe get some kits, but I can't find either. Atleast I have 4 months to figure something out.

If you're doing the 713th at Okinawa, use the DML M4 composite or use a Tigermodels upper hull on the TASCA M4A1 lower hull. I believe the 713th used the high bustle turrets on their tanks as well.

Thanks guys. Actually got a little modeling in after cleaning branches, twigs, leaves, etc. from the driveway. Now it's a impossible struggle trying to find gas to get to work. Stations with power are out of gas no matter how much they're charging. There is no public transportation to speak of.

At least we have our home and our belongings. Many families that live in water front communities lost their homes. It's truly a nightmare.

The 713th was formed just before Okinawa and thus had new equipment. The turrets were of the later high bustle design. DML's kit will suffice quite well.

Trying to clear enough room on the workbench for some actual modeling. In doing so I was moving all my Sherman pieces and thought I'd take a photo to show that progress is still being made on this project. Yes, it is really 1/24 scale. This photo shows the "working blocks".

These are pieces out of a mold made at the halfway stage of building. Sort of like hitting the SAVE button when working on an important project. If I screw up now, I can always go back and cast another piece from this incomplete stage without having to start completely over.

Most of the bogie and VVS suspension elements have been worked out and the track prototypes are nearing the final stages. It'll be a individual link track with each link consisting of only two pieces. Work on the engine cover grills and lower hull will begin shortly.

Hopefully I'll have the working molds and a complete prototype ready by the time the campaign actually begins!

Jim, Looking forward to following your scratch built Sherman. I truly envy you guys with the skills needed to model what you want, when you want. I'm happy just to complete a OOB model these days.

Thanks Joel. At the moment I am able to spend more time building stuff so I'm finally making some progress. In the late spring thru fall I usually work 50 to 70 hours a week so now 40 hours feels like a vacation! Getting projects finished up etc.

I'm sure the rivet counters will shred it to pieces but so far I am fairly pleased with it. Besides, until Tasca or someone like that comes out with a M4A3 in 1/24 I guess this one will have to do.

Jim, back in the old days we had our share of rivet counters too. Never paid them much mind then, and still don't. What you're accomplishing is truly outstanding modeling. Looking forward to following your build.

Rivet counters? We still do! But I for one won't be counting any - those "big hatch" hulls were welded!

(Sorry, couldn't resist!)

In all seriousness that's mighty fine work there, Jim. Is your aim to knock out full 1:24 kits? It'd be well worth me reinforcing a shelf to hold all that resin...

Hi Tom,

Yes, you may well want to do some structural analysis on the display shelf because this one will be a kit! And yes, that's a whole lot of resin. So far I am concentrating on the exterior (like most injection kits) but eventually I'd like to offer a full interior for it as well. I have most of the GAA Ford engine worked out already so I may offer the engine kit shortly thereafter.

The main components that I have left to build are also some of the easiest. The sides and front plate of the upper hull and the lower hull less the transmission housing. All the sprockets and bogies are in the working block molds now and the track links are in their final mockup stage. These links will be awesome two piece units but I have to cast a gazillion of them.

As far as rivet counters go it's not a bad thing really (though I like to roll my eyes). Resin cast models use molds that only last a short while and need to be replaced frequently. So for me, revisions and corrections should make a model like this evolve over time.

I originally signed up for the Sherman only campaign with the intention of building the new Tasca M32B1. But with just a week to go to finish up weathering my latest project a M26 Pershing, the urge to start the M32 is getting harder and harder to resist. So I'm going to switch my build from the M32B1 to the DML M4 Composite hull PTO Sherman instead.

I'm still on target for building my 1/16th A1 AND also the LEGO SHERMAN (Best-Lock) to please the family.

Still on the fence about the suspension type.

Right, I've had a bit of an accident today. My car ended up up-side-down in a field. I'm fine but I'll be dropping all campaigns. I'll also need to find someone to take over my 'Replacement!' campaign.

I'll still pop in on a couple campaigns but as far as I know right now I haven't got money to be spending on plastic tanks.
