Hi there,
cool and risky builds going here, I like it something for everyone, scratch, Kit bash, aftermarket, what else do you want
@ Mike: nice to see a side by side build What tips have you got for the weird Dragon idea of bashing 3 tracks into 2 I also have that kit and an ancient set of track which is what I intend to use when I build it. I can´t believe that Dragon didn´t add there own HVSS track set to that kit
@ Jeff: wow is all I can say to your first choice
is the Best Lock going to be OOB or did you get a set of etch for it
@ Michael Keenan: that is some serious cutting there, respect
Well just a quick update, thanks to Michael Satin I now know where to start detailing. This isn´t going to be just a turret swap:

I'm building the DML M4 Composite Hull PTO Sherman with comes with a high and low Bustle. Several online sources state that the low bustle with loaders hatch was the most common in the PTO, so I'm going with that option. I've also come across references that some of Shermans had headlights while others didn't. Does anyone have any knowledge of what was the more prevalent option?
I also have a question about what appears to be some type of locking or securing strap for the hatches on page 2. They're on the outside of the hatch. Is this correct? Seems to me that it would lock anyone in the turret inside, while allowing anyone to open the hatch from the outside. Is this really correct, or is another of the many instruction mistakes?

Looks like you decided to cut out the hatch. So far so good.
I decided to cut the hatch after looking at period photos of Israeli M4A4Ts. I also wanted to an odd looking turret.

The hatches did indeed have locks to keep people out when necessary:

Mike, thanks for the info and the picture. I guess that they could lock the hatches then crawl under the tank and enter through the bottom hull access. Still seems to me that it would be much easier to just be able to lock the hatch from the inside.

Hi Joel,
The headlights drop into sockets, and can be pulled out for stowing whenever the crew thinks they'd be too vulnerable (like going int combat). So, sometimes you see them, and sometimes you don't! But I doubt there was any hard & fast rule - there are plenty of tanks pictured in combat with headlights in place.
As for the hull hatches, those external padlocks were for when the tank was locked up "empty". When the crew was inside, they just dogged the hatches from the inside. (I certainly wouldn't want to go into combat knowing some clown had locked me in! Makes bailing out a real challenge...)

Tom, thanks for your response. Never knew that the headlights were so easily removable. And it makes perfect sense. As for the lock, it never occurred to me that it was for keeping the tank locked up when empty. Of course the DML PE parts look nothing like the picture, so I guess I'll just have to scratch them out.

After adding some stowage and a tarp I painted my celluclay snow base white and the exposed parts OD. After a coat of Future I weathered the exposed parts, painted the snow with some acrylic lacquer medium and applied snow made from a mix of baking powder and splenda : ) Then I blew off the loose material while sealing it with dulcote.

here is some progress on my M51 Sherman. I opened up the hatch on the side of the turret for throwing out empty shell casings and tried my hand at getting more of a cast texture to my tank. I used Tamiya surface primer with a foam ear plug cut in half to give it a little texture. I sure with different coarses of foam you could achive different textures. Dan

Dan,
Can't really see the extra texture. Can you take a close up picture and post it?

Joel, will get some close up pictures and post them for you. Got a couple questions for everyone. I was looking at going with different tracks than what the kit supplied. I have a set AF35032 T-80 tracks and I have a set of Tasca tracks. What is everybody's opinion. Is there one that is better than the other? My other question is did the IDF ever fly the country's flag off the antenna? Was trying to give it a little color after I get it done and sitting on a sandy colored base. Dan

Here's some more progress on the M32B1. Got the interior pretty much done. Almost ready to button up after some decals on the first aid kit and grenade cases.
A few other items. Here's how I handled the neon green winch cable
As every review I have read points out, the tiny steps on the big "A" frame, break when you look at them, so I broke them all off and drilled holes for wire ones
Then the P/E set arrived. Pretty intense
An example. Exhaust grill in kit = 1 piece. Exhaust grill from P/E set = 35 pieces...
More soon, thanks for looking!

Terry, looking real good. Your method of painting the main cable worked great. Thanks for that tip. I also had to replace every single hand grab on the main boom. They do indeed break off just by looking at them.
You're a braver man then I am opting for a 35 pc exhaust grill. Like I said, my M32B1 is on hold as it just got the better of me. Looking forward to following your build to it's conclusion.

But, I didn't expect anything less from Terry.

I've got a rather odd question. The M4 I'm supposed to do (we'll see) is Creighton Abrams M4 Thunderbolt V. The one good picture I've seen of it seems to show a cable reel on back of the turret, which makes sense given he was a battalion CO. The Dragon M4 Normandy kit doesn't include this item.
Now I have a fair number of Sherman kits in my stash, mostly Dragon but some Tasca, and Tamiya as well. My question is: does anyone know if any Sherman kits DO include a cable reel? If so, hopefully I'll have it and be able to source it there.
Thanks! Fantastic work so far on this one!
Michael

Well I have finished construction one of two shermans I’m planning to build. I’m using just a bit of artistic licensing on this build do to the fact I only had a color profile to go by. I could not find any real photos of the tank I wanted to build and even had to guess at the type of suspension used due to the fact that the profile did not show the lower hull. I’ve also did some basic work on the firefly and will begin painting once this model is complete.

Tom, that sounds like some sort of crazy Soviet doctrine. Lock them in! They'll fight harder if they know they can't escape!
Mike, I really like how the snow effect is turning out. Though I though we were building tanks, not baking.
Right, was going through some pictures online and I found this;
It's save file information says it's a Firefly Vc, anyone know how to tell the difference between the Ic's and Vc's? If this doesn't meet my 'it must be something unique' criteria I don't know what will!

No Sherman kits contain cable reels as far as I know. I think resicast might include one in one of their Sherman or Priest stowage sets

Have just about completed the build on the Super Sherman, only a few more small things to do (like the tracks!!) and I can put an undercoat on.
