Paul R,
Just thinkign out loud. Like I posted, I like the look of the vehicle. I would have loved to have seen an actual fixed superstructure assault Sherman. An assault Stuart with a 57mm gun is actually on the books for the next What If Campaign.
Christopher,
Here's Kimmie photographed on the white mat. The yellows still show up, but not quite as bright as the blue mat one. In real life the yellow and red-brown don't stand out nearly as much as they do in either picture. I took a couple of test photos of my Sherman turret and they are night and day different.

Paul, thanks for the answer.
Alex, Kimmie looks good. Glad you were able to finish the build.

Bit of an update on the D10 Sherman:
I've got a few PE parts to add, the periscope guards to install and that's about it for the build. The suspension's done, but will be installed after painting and I may have to add a .50 cal MG.
This has been a blast so far and I can't remember the last time I built a model this fast! Of course, I still have painting to do, but still!

I think the Jagdtiger Ausf. E is ready.
The more I look at it, the more I am surprised the Germans never took it into production, but left it to the Bulgarians.
;-)
Cheers

Alex: Kimmie looks awesome with the reds/yellows on the grey splinter scheme! If you're still having trouble with the lighting, try natural light around midday.
Paul: Very stout, are you planning on adding any anti-mine protection for those huge flat slabs?
Rob: Congrats on a successful completion! Great photos to boot! I'm sure that the powers to be decided that the gun was too small for their tastes and not worth pursuing.

No, the period 1975-ish really didn't have any of the funky new mine protection technology.
The armour on the superstructure has been increased by an additional 1.5" over the Sherman hull's original 2.5" thickness. Enough to provide long distance protection against older weapons, but still not enough to protect against the Soviet 100 and 115mm guns of the day. Still the M50s and M51s got no armour upgrade and served usefully.
Firing in the defensive role from prepared positions that provided protection against weapons outside their firing arc, the D10 Shermans were still useful in the period up to about 1980. By the beginning of the Lebanese incursion, all of them were out of service. Unlike the later M50s and M51s, these vehicles did not enter Lebanese service in the 80s and were not exported overseas. By the time of their withdrawal, were just too clapped out.

Paul: I can imagine the load that the modified superstructure and large gun would have imposed on the suspension and whatever engine they chose to use in them.
Just out of curiosity, are you planning on placing your build in a dio depicting a fortified position? It would look pretty amazing if you went that route

I did a quick weight calculation and the weight increase over a standard Sherman would be in the order of 3-4 tons, that's about 15% of a normal Sherman all-up weight so I don't think the suspension would suffer that much. The centre of gravity would be lower without the turret and that also helps reduce the loads imposed during operations even with the increased weight. A bit of a maintenance headache with faster than normal wear rates, but not to bad, I figure.

Yeah, I'm thinking of plopping it into a prepared firing position on the Golan Heights with concrete revetting and a large berm on the sides with an access ramp at the back. It would be essentially hull down from the front and invisible from the sides.

Don't forget to factor in the change of center-of-gravity which now favors the front, putting an uneven load on the front suspension. It may only really affect the front bogies, but the mechanics would sure remember that. She is looking very good, I am falling in love with the US hatches on top of the Soviet-style superstructure!

I'm considering joining. I have a small 1/48 hovercraft hull and some spare braille parts including a turret, lasers from a UFO, rockets off some hellos, and a copy of the game Ogre for inspiration. Would a Ground Effects Vehicle be acceptable?

Yeah, it should kneel a bit at the front. but I'm not going to tear apart all of the suspension units to achieve that look, I'm afraid. To get the right look with the kit suspension, I'd have to separate the lower bogey arms from the upper spring reaction levers and then reposition them to splay the arms with each arm splayed a bit differently than the next in line.
That's just not going to happen. I _could_ do it, but I'm aiming for a bit of a quick build here.

Yeah, that's the look I was going for. Something very familiar and different all at the same time. She is looking very good, I am falling in love with the US hatches on top of the Soviet-style superstructure!

Brent: As far as I'm concerned, hovercraft qualify as semi-amphibious which means they definitely count for ground forces. Have at it!
Paul: Just paint the wheels as steel wheels on the front bogies, similar to what they did with some of the German Jagdpanzers in WWII.
And I definitely agree about the similar-yet-different thought, it really causes you to take a second look just to make sure you know what you're looking at!

Paul R, I'm really enjoying your build.
I agree with the others about the weight issue, especially all of it sitting on the front. I think it can be lived with and even used for the vehicle's backstory. Maybe say that the D10 went from a "slug-it-out", open ground long gun to basically a mobile antitank gun, often forced to used in a dug-in role. Most of that being a result of the vehicle's mechanical issues and the improving enemy tanks. I would suggest adding a rack for added road-wheels. Maybe some added track.

Hi guys,
would i be able to join in with a STug IV referb, the STug is complete but i would completely change the superstructure. It would be scratchbuilt. IS this allowed?

That wouldn't change things, the suspension would still kneel, even with steel wheels. Which didn't exist and developing which would have violated the concept behind the conversion; something quick & cheap using what they had.

Luca: Yes absolutely, get some pics up and get to work!
Paul: Understood, you can always fudge it a little by depicting it dug in in a fortified position which I know we discussed earlier. Your call, just make sure you enjoy it!

I've been too slammed to get any modeling done, but hopefully soon.

I uploaded pictures of Kimmie and Carla to the Campaign Gallery. I figured I'd better go ahead and do it. I've got a Italeri RSO that's begging me to give it Carla's rocket launcher.

Jeremy, I might end up doing that. I have an old RSO that was a casualty of an overly curious niece a few years ago. The bed cover canopy frame is trashed and there's some other missing pieces as well. I removed the launcher and test fit it to the RSO. It wouldn't be a difficult project. I'd have to cut down the bed and make it into a flat bed. I think the launcher looks better on the RSO.
Now that just leaves me with a closed in, turret-less Panzer IV to find something to do with.
