Thanks Emre.
Actually i won't be buying the Revell kit anyway, i was just wondering if it was based upon the old Tamiya kit...afterall Revell.de do rebox a lot of other manufacturers (and deceased manufacturers) kits. Of course they also do a lot of new stuff of their own as well, especially German subjects!
But the Tamiya kit was extremely cheap so i bought it for some fun, i almost have it assembled from just half an afternoon of working on it.

Well then Info can't hurt, eh?
Nearly all of the modern German stuff Revell produces is theirs. The problem, though, is that I think they use the same mold to produce both 1/72 and 1/35 scales of the same vehicle. As a result, 1/72 scale items are a real gem while on 1/35 scale the same vehicle has clunky details and looks stupid.
Other than that modern German stuff, every item they have is "borrowed" (for 1/35 scale) from Zvezda, Italeri or Dragon.

I've suddenly made some progress on my entry for this campaign now that a few other projects are done. This has been quite a bit of fun so far, like they say: a change can be as good as a holiday.
All primered up. Sorry if the fact that i couldn't even be bothered filling the old motorizing holes offends anyone. But it's not being built for competion and i know it will never be picked up by anyone to look underneath, and i'm just lazy i suppose.
My first ever attempt at freehanding armour camo. I did some shading, probably overstated. But i always find that clear coats and weathering downgrade all my efforts. Hence i deliberately overstate at the start.
All glossed up and ready for decals, and hopefully washing and filtering tomorrow.

My quick entry for this campaign is done. It was a fun build to do something that i normally don't build, especially from a $2 model kit. But i'll be going back to aircraft again now...too many wheels on these things!

Actually the Revell Marder 1A3 is a good piece of kit. It leaves some room for improvements but not that much. It's also the only game in town if you want to build an A3. Like most of their modern kits it is fun to build and produces a good looking model resonably close to the original OOB.

Andrew,
Just curious. Why gloss the whole model and not just the area where the decals are going?

I use a laquer based gloss before applying any washes. That makes the surface underneath pretty much impervious to any washes i apply over the top. I didn't really want to stain the surface with the washes i applied, just wanted to highlight recessed and raised details. The laquer gloss makes it easy to remove any unwanted wash- in this case i used oils/mineral spirit washes.
The filtering was a different matter- the point of those WAS to stain the surface, but once again the gloss makes it easy to remove anything i didn't want.
It's just personal preference on my part really, but it's a quite common thing to do for aircraft modellers so i carried it over to this build as well- i didn't know armour modellers didn't do it that way!.

That looks good, Scott. The weathering is very convincing especially considering it is 1/72 scale.
I am about to start my SAM 6 vehicle shortly, but have a few other things to finish first.

Hello Mirko,
you've done a very good job on this kit. The paint job is really nice too. Though I have one point, you should shorten the towing cables on the rear deck. They do not "loop" on the real thing.

I have a long way to go before I get to the standard of some of the folks on here. I am impressed with the tracked vehicles and armoured cars aswell with the weathering tecniques and the added camouflage to the Leopard.
Still plugging away at mine doing wee bits at a time. Will need to make an attempt at weathering as I love how subtle some of the guys are with their work.

Guten tag, mein herren! Thought I'd join the campaign as I am currently building three BW tanks - Tamiya's old Leo 1A4, Italeri's superb M47, and a Tamiya M41. I know both the Tamiya kits are dogs (the Italeri 1A4 is far better, and AFV Club do a nice M41) but I had them to hand and with a little extra scratchbuilding attention & extra details they should dress up well enough.
The M47 will be set around 1957-8, when crews wore camo & post-Wermacht field caps, along with US M1 helmets. The M41 will be a later upgrade circa 1965 with smoke dischargers etc. Sadly, none of the three can really wear camo in their timeframe...
My only problem is a lack of info on paint and unit markings. I hear that Tamiya Field Grey is good for the Leo, but can anyone recommend other mixes? And were the early US-supplied tanks used in OD or Field Grey? The only colour pics I've seen are of "preserved" tanks, so the paint isn't necessarily original at all. As for markings, can anyone tell me what a tank in the 50s/60s ought to have? (Other than number plates and that rectangular unit symbol at each end...) I really need to find a primer on BW markings.
Will post a few build pics soon,
Tom

Hi Tom
I don't know if what you are looking for is maybe on these sites as I don't speak German so everything would need translated.
I was passed these two sites by others on here so they are full of info if you hunt hard enough.
Good luck

Tankograd (a german publisher) has a number of volumes on German Bundeswehr vehicles with original photographs, some color some not.
German vehicles where colored in "Gelb-Olive" (RAL 6014) until the 1980s (Yellow-Olive) a greenish color that always looked a bit "faded" and had a tendency to attract slightly darker colored scratches(1) Starting mid-80s combat vehicles got "Nato 3-color" unless in depot and/or sheduled for replacement(2). On some vehicles the color was actually "Nato Black + Nato Brown + Gelb-Olive base" instead of a true 3-Tone.
Some pictures
Revell has a Gelboliv that's a good match (Color-Code 42)
(1) OTOH it would not chip and was extremly hard. Unless it came in contact with BW-issue insect repellant
(2) BW M48s still present in the HSchBrigs retained their Gelb-Olive until the end, some Depot-storage vehicles got painted 3-color despite being sheduled for destruction

I have started my entry for this campaign the SA-6. The Bundeswehr took over several batteries of these systems after the German unification and used them until the late 1990ties.
I am building the Trumpeter SA-6 kit with decals from the spares box. The looks looks good and the fit of the first few parts are good. The only problem is a large gap at the tip of the missiles. The missiles themselves seem to be small models in their own right although I have not finished them yet.
More to follow...

Just finished weathering my troop carrier and realised the decals were missing! Argh!! Anyone got a spare set for the Tamiya kit number MM-198 Schutzenpanzer Marder? It is an ancient kit. Don't ask me how I didn't twig that they were missing. I wanted to leave them off until the end and then clean patches of the weathering off and apply the markings to make it look like the markings had been washed to make them stand out more Don't ask me why I wanted to do that but it seemed like a good idea at the time!

Hi Warren, I do not have the exact numbers for the Marder. However, I have quite a lot of numbers in my stash. Maybe some of those will work. What colour and style should the numbers be?

Thanks for the fast reply. Numbers are the standard black with white outline modern-German letters.
