Hey Justin,
Here's Don Franklin's (aka gunnytank) photo's on his show gallery:
http://photos.kitmaker.net/showgallery.php?cat=500&ppuser=15383
His USMC M4A2 flamethrower Sherman is amazing !!!
I'm leaning toward the Panzer IV but it will depend on what's still in Dae Hoon's shop when I get there !!!
BTW - I never asked, what armed service are you with ?? U.S.A.F., U.S. Army, US.M.C., ????
Cheers

Army, E-4 (Specialist), 92Y Unit Supply. I'm in an air defense unit (PATRIOT).
That Sherman does look great! The flame is an interesting touch. I am partial to German armor myself so I'd say the Ausf. G sounds like a good idea, say...1st SS LAH, near Kharkov? or something i haven't seen before, the 5th SS Wiking!

Hey justin, looking good. I really like your texturing on the mantlet, if you ever see Mr surfacer 500 grab it, good stuff and thicker for texturing. I'll be watching how this comes about, best of luck!

Hey Justin,
I pretty well like all World War II vehicles but German stuff is the most interesting as they produced the greatest variety of vehicles and prototypes.
Next comes Canadian or British/Commonwealth vehicles, closely followed by U.S. and Russian stuff.
Since my Dad handed me another wad of cash today, $200 CDN or $164 USD, I picked up that Dragon U.S.M.C. M4A2 PTO.
Unfortunately, my friend had sold that Dragon Pz.Kpfw. IV Ausf. G. so I grabbed a Pz.Kpfw. IV Ausf. F1(F) Smart Kit,
I also comforted myself by picking up a couple of Dragon's Premium anti-tank guns, the new 5cm PaK38 and the re-issued PaK40.
I haven't had a chance to take a peek at them yet but will do so tonight and tomorrow.
Cheers

Hey Justin,
This is the kit in question:
http://www.dragon-models.com/html/6315poster.htm
The kit probably has much in common with the F2(G) as the only real difference was the long L/43 7.5cm gun.
It looks good, I really like these Smart Kits.
The M4A2 Sherman PTO is also good looking:
http://www.dragon-models.com/html/6462poster.htm
It has 2 sets of DS tracks, one set with duckbill extenders, 2 types of suspension units and lots of spare bits and pieces.
It ain't German but you may want to grab one.
Cheers

Yes, I like Dragon's Smart Kits. The F2(G) that i put together was outstanding in fit. The directions did not mention which parts you needed for which Ausf. Leaving it up to you, just for fair warning however i'm sure you are aware of this. I've really been looking forward to a Sherman, perhaps a summer project. I am going to get a Dragon Henschel Turret K.T after this J.P is done for the Big Cats campaign.Ive even heard rumors of the MRS. buying me a certain K.T from Trumpeter in really large scale!!! As an anniversary gift...........for of course some crazy Louie Vatton bag that are cheap here. But its a nice trade off, i'm really looking forward to a 1/16th K.T
Newfish,
I rarely have problems with photobucket. Thanks for the compliments on the weld seams. I actually did get carried away, i welded the roof on!!!!

Let's try this again
Justin, Dragon's instructions can be bewildering at times, what with all the options or variations they provide.
After examining the instructions and settling on the vehicle to build, I use a yellow highlighter on the instruction sheets to indicate the parts that I have to use.
Dragon could learn a lot from Tamiya when It comes to printing legible instructions !!!
Sounds like you'll be doing some marital bartering with SWMBO regarding that Trumpeter KT.
At about $640 USD, that's a lot of trading off:
http://www.hlj.com/product/TRP00906
The local importer of Trumpeter is a friend and he wanted to know how many KT's I wanted.
I told him at those prices, I could buy a nice used car !!
BTW - There's very little external difference between the Pz.Kpfw. IV F(F1) and the F2(G) other than the gun.
The Germans loved to use multiple names for the same vehicle and it can be a bit confusing to sort out.
If you're really into German vehicles, I suggest you get a copy of "The Encyclopedia of German Tanks of World War II".
http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/1854095188/ref=dp_olp_used?ie=UTF8&condition=used
Amazon's prices seem high and I believe it's available in a cheaper paperback version like "British and American Tanks of World War II"
http://www.amazon.com/British-American-Tanks-World-War/dp/0304355291
Both books are worth looking into getting.
Cheers

jjumbo, thanks for the birthday wishes! Now its time to ring in the New Year!!!
Got paid today, and ordered the wheels and PE set. I'm going to hold off on the barrel. I think the one from Tamiya looks good enough. I was hoping that it wasn't a cut in half barrel and its not. Soooo, waiting for the parts now. However, to keep myself busy I'm building my 1/48th Tiger I from xmas also.

Hey Justin,
Happy New Year !!!
Even though the kit's long gun barrel is a solid piece, you still have to glue a cap onto the end of it.
I think you should still get an AM barrel, just hold off gluing the kit barrel in place until you can get the replacement.
Cheers

Hey Justin,
Just doing my job trying to keep you on your toes !!!
Which one of Dragon's Production Turret King Tiger's are you getting?
The one with the zimmerit already molded on:
http://www.perthmilitarymodelling.com/reviews/vehicles/dragon/dr6303.html
Or one of the 3 kits without:
http://www.dragonmodelsltd.com/html/6208-p1.htm
http://www.dragonmodelsltd.com/html/6232.1.htm
http://www.dragonmodelsltd.com/html/6254p1.htm
They're all good kits, all depends on what version you want to build.
Cheers and Happy New Year!

finally some much needed progress as the mail clerk got my italieri wheels in!!1
here they are....along with a winter lager. cheers!
The small nodes under the opening for the stock bogies had to be removed...
The stock bumper versus the Italieri ones...
right side done...
Stock bogie versus the Italier bogie, also the Italieri bogies are moveable..
Thats about all for tonight, im going to save the left side for tomorrow, the wheels the day after. The Lionroar PE set is also on its way from Hobbylink Japan. I must say they are excellent. The delievery time was excellent and the packaging simple and effective.

Hey Justin,
Sorry, just me being a smart ass Bozo AGAIN but the set is from Tristar , a Chinese company and not Italeri.
Mind you, they certainly are a far cry better than the old Tamiya parts.
Sam Adams, nice choice of beer !!!
Cheers

uuuhhh......i blame the beer! then again, i was just testing you, seeing if you were paying attention. I knew they were made by Tristar...says so on the box...
Anyway, the left side is going on tonight. I made a run by the PX to get some more superglue and grabbed some baking powder and white glue for some mud for this beast.

Well, heres the progress as of Thursday night. I added the bogies and bump stops, however losing two flat pieces the actual rubber bump stops mount to, so I had to glue the rubber bump stops straight to the mount to the hull. Also, my J.P is missing the fuel doors and Tamiya doesn't even include some in the kit...WTF?? I hope Tamiya is not this inaccurate now-a-days. I've only done their StuG IV which is just as old as this J.P. Anyhow, I scratcbuilt some fuel doors using some parts from the Tristar wheel kit. I used two bump stops from the Ausf A-D model and cut them in half, then removed on small node from the top, then used a square number piece to serve as the hinge. Then using the other bump stops, I carefully cut the nodes off the top and glued them in place to serve as bolt heads. Then marked off the location of the fuel doors and glued them in place. I think its pretty decent! Finally, I added the correct return rollers, as the Tamiya kit supplied the Mid model return rollers which won't work on a late war J.P.
Heres some pics:
Enjoy! As always let me know what you think please.
P.S If i suddenly disappear, its because the army gave me my smallpox vaccine and i died! hahaha

Hi Justin
Glad to hear you received the Tristar wheel set. The model is coming along nicely, just one thing, the fuel covers are on backwards. I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to turn them around. Looking foward to seeing this build progress.

Hey Justin,
Tamiya's Jgd.Pz. IV, StuG IV, Brummbar, Mobelwagen, Wirbelwind and Pz.Kpfw. IV Ausf. D were all based on their original Pz.Kpfw. IV Ausf. H.
The lower hull was designed for motorization (hence all the slots and holes) and the dimensions of things like the wheels and hull were wrong and many details like the fuel caps were omitted.
Tamiya stopped motorizing their kits sometime in the late 1980's and their newer kits are generally more accurate than those early attempts.

Keep up the good work. The improvements that you're doing I believe show off your improving skills. You're just lucky you can order kits with a snap. I'm lucky if I can get two a year!

Rob- Ugh, I went off the cover of the Tristar box, and it shows them in the position they currently are in. None of my reference photos show the fuel door locations. Do they just need to be rotated around? Keep up the beautiful work on that destroyed Pz. IV, it looks excellent!!
John- From what i've seen, I'm not a huge Tamiya fan. I've noticed there are a few "new" kits on their online catalog but how much better they are compared to their older models and then compared to kits like Dragon, I don't know, which makes me sway towards Dragon who I know builds excellent models. If I start getting red spots i think that would be the time to break out the bottle of Jack my friend.
Rich- Thanks for the comments. This one was a gift from my mother for xmas, the last model i bought being back in early december with my Panzer II. However, I don't know what limits your purchasing power. Keep up the stellar work on "Eva".
