My mother sent me an xmas gift, she doesn't know any better but she grabbed Tamiya's super old Jagdpanzer IV L/70. I've already purchased a Lionroar PE kit, and an aluminum barrel. I'm currently trying to track down steel road wheels for the front bogies. I've started modifying the return rollers, so its down to three now.
I am going to place this guy in Dec. 1944, during the Wacht Am Rhine operation.
return rollers taken off the left side.
then placed back on
making sure everything is lined up.
The front one only needed to be moved forward ever so slightly and the rear one moved up and to the rear just a bit. One put smack dab over the vertical slit in the side. Aided by Tamiya white putty.

Hey Justin
Seems like you're going to have a tough project here I predict. Looking foward to this build. Nothing beats a medium vehicle with a big gun, except for maybe a Karl!
Anyway good luck I'm watching this.

hey up justin like what you've done so far, if you want to improve the basic tamiya kit get the on vehicle equipment set for the panzer IV from tamiya to replace the tools and the bosch head light as these are very soft in detail or oversized, also raid the spares box if you have any of dragon's older panzer IV based vehicles check the instructions for parts not used, i managed to scrounge a spare track holder, later style exhausts, even a spare barrel which was a vast improvement on the kit part, like i said to richard when my home pc is fixed i'll post some pics of my jagpanzer IV from tam good luck with the build mate.

Hey Justin,
Looks like you've got a good head start on that old thing !!
The Tristar Pz.Kpfw. IV wheel set may be your best bet at finding those steel rimmed wheels:
http://www.tristar-model.com/products35014.html
FYI - Asked my friend from Seoul (he owns the LHS I frequent) about where the best LHS's are in South Korea.
Thought it might help you track down the Italeri or Dragon kits of the Jag.Pz. IV.
He's been living here in Vancouver for 12 years so he'll let me know as soon as he finds out anything.
Cheers
jjumbo
p.s. What did you use to remove the return roller stations?? Looks pretty neat and clean.

john, your awesome. I located a LHS 3 blocks away from Osan A.Bs' main gate, ironically called U.S Hobby . It was pretty shameful on armor kits, it was mostly aircraft and R.C cars. However, I did pick up Dragons 3rd Fallschirmjager Div. kit with 4 soliders in various poses. I will probably just raid the weapons and equipment for stowage. I used a new blade on my knife and slowly worked it up under the return rollers. Its not perfect, they are kinda lobsided. To fix that problem, i placed a blob of putty underneath the location they would be put, let it dry and trimmed the excess. Thanks for the help with locating LHS in S.K!
Rich, thanks for keeping up with her. I'm still waiting for payday for the aftermarket bits, but I'll work on things here and there. Keep up the good work with that Karl, shes looking great.
Ant, I raided my Dragon Pz. IV ausf. F2 kit for some parts, there wasn't a whole lot left over :-
P.S thanks to anyone whos viewed this and please feel free to comment back on my progress and tips and advice would be great!
Also John, after looking through the site, they are "out of stock" on the wheels. HAHA

Hey Justin,
Better cross your toes too and hope like H*LL that the guys in the U.K. don't grab both sets !!!
I did a quick check myself and that set is as rare as hen's teeth.
The fact that Tristar's online store is out of stock definitely shows you that they do a very short manufacturing run.
Hope you have good luck with those sets from the U.K.
Cheers

I'll be watching this build with interest, I also have a Tamiya Jagdpanzer IV to build, i've got a bit carried away with extra details for it lol have a couple of Eduard photo etched sets, elefant metal barrel, academy individual track links, and the Tristar Panzer IV wheel set. I got mine from eBay, they were only US$4.99 plus shipping. Check out this auction number on eBay: 250345230655 The guy is in South Korea, and has two sets available!

John,
Well they only have to stay there for 7 more days. And since Pat was nice enough to leave that other web link, I now have a back up plan. It would be a waste just to buy the Dragon steel wheeled version just to sack the kit of its steel wheels. I know its a better detailed kit (its Dragon ) but my mom bought me this for xmas so it has a bit of sentimental value as well.
Pat,
Thanks for that link! Now I have a plan B.
Andrew,
Copycat! HAHA sounds like my aftermarket kits right down to the wheels and tracks. Just waiting for payday to buy 'em up. I will post plenty of pics and what-not-to-do's for you to go by. Thanks for watching!

put some work in her tonight:
after looking around a bit, i noticed that the exaust pipes were also modified although i could not locate a specific time period this was done. Anyway, figuring that it was also a modification with the steel roadwheels, I scratched some from left over sprue and drilled the ends out. Also added a PE chain left over from my Pz. II and a scratchbuilt "L" hook for the towbar area.
also put on the front nose thing, not sure what its called on j.p. and also the drive shafts.

I took a few mins to try and use some left over wheels from my Stug kit to make steel looking ones. I think they dont look too bad, perhaps use them as a last resort if I cannot get ahold of that Italieri kit.

Hey Justin,
You're certainly getting along with your build !!
One minor criticism though, the steel rimmed version of the Pz.Kpfw. IV wheels are quite different from the rubber tired types.
If you're going to scratch build them, you'd be better to cut some circles out of plastic stock to replicate the appearance of the steel rimmed type.
This build review from Missing-Lynx may be of help:

I wasn't planning on using the scratched ones really, just an experiment. How does the exaust look? I noticed it doesn't look perfectly lined up but I imagine is the guy backed up into a tree in the ardennes...you know the place is full of them!

Hey Justin,
Your exhaust pipes look good, you may want to thin the edges of the pipes to a realistic thickness.
You also need to add the armoured covers, part #B32, that protected the exit holes in the rear hull at the base of the exhaust pipes.
Here's a photo of what I mean from that Missing-Lynx build:
This kit build on Hyperscale may also be of use:

Hey Justin,
A little but all this researching has got the juices going and I've been looking at the two Tamiya Jagdpanzer IV's sitting in my stash.
Hate to say it but one of them is so ancient it has the original Military Miniatures series number from sometime back in the '70s and a 900 Yen price.
Japan HobbyLink has the same kit going for 2200 Y or about $25 U.S.
http://www.hlj.com/product/TAM35088
Amazingly, it's hard to believe that old price works out to about $3 to $4 U.S. at the time the kit first came out.
Ain't inflation wonderful !!
Having dug out it out, I'm considering building it as the L/48 version.
I have some Cavilier zimmerit, Jordi Rubio barrels, Tamiya Panzer IV tool set and some Dragon Super-Detail tracks.
Think I have some Aber or Eduard PE somewhere in my collection too.
Vancouver's been getting a major dump of snow this weekend (Seattle too!) and I may just settle in and do some building tomorrow.
Cheers

I heard about Washington, 20 inches or so! Makes me want to come there, knock out some serious snowboarding!
Good luck on your kit, which theater (if you have thought this far) are you going to put it in? East or West? Glad to help get the JP juices flowing.I found a video on youtube, apparently there are only a handful of videos with them in there. However, i did find one, its a panzergrenadier video with L/48s. I'll get the link and post it. They are a series of 6 videos each about 8-9 mins long. Its great for tactics and some camo ideas.
Also made some more progress (if you call it that). I broke off the rear lifting ring, so i had to make a new one. Also, put those guards on and make new exaust pipes after messing with the old ones too much.

Hey Justin,
Yeah, I watched the Seahawks and Jets game in Seattle this afternoon.
It was snowing so hard at times that it looked like Brett Favre and Mike Holmgren were back in Green Bay again!!
It's been dumping here all last night and today and will be doing so all week.
Very unusual for this time of year in Vancouver, at least at ground level.
We usually have to put up with lots of rain and wind.
I hear it's also a bit chilly near you there in the ROK lately, about 30 degrees F or -1 degrees C, just about the same here.
Anyway, on a modelling note, the new exhaust stacks and the PE chain look good but you should probably replace the other towing/lifting ring too.
I'll probably build a Jagdpanzer IV with the 116th Panzer Division "The Greyhounds".
The 116th fought in Normandy and the Falaise Gap or Pocket and you get the markings in the kit:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/116th_Panzer_Division_(Germany)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falaise_Pocket
Keep up the good work.
Cheers

Yea, i remember when holmgren and favre were back in green bay...those were the good days...(im a pack fan)
Yes, its been very very cold here, but a bit warmer the last few days.
I also was going to model a 116 J.P IV, so i guess we'll have a small platoon! looking forward to seeing yours take shape. Good luck with the Falaise pocket if that is the time period you are shooting for, seems like nothing made it out without atleast heavy damage, perhaps yours could be missing a fender or rear guard, the ones next to the engine? Mine is already too late in the war to be a Falaise pocket J.P, so I'm stuck in Dec. 44 or later.
P.S. I've been reading alot about hard-edged and soft-edged 3 tone camo schemes. This will be my first one. Can you shed any light on this subject?

Justin,
Yikes, just what have you been doing and what exactly have you broken on your kit?
No more gory wounds this time I hope??
If you're planning to do a late version L/70, having looked closely at my kit, I can see a number of simple things you'll need to do to improve your kit.
1) beef up and/or add the welds on the upper hull and front nose plate,
2) add cast texture to the gun mantle and hull plates and
3) replace the drive sprocket and idler wheels with some replacements from my spares box.
FYI - Don't count on any photos posted from me anytime soon.
Alas, I have an older digital camera but have no idea how or if I can load any pictures onto my iBook.
Keep the updates coming !!
Cheers, it's time for bed

Well, I knocked off the left side lifting hook. Thats all so far...I made it through the Pz. II without knicking my fingers, however, did manage to glue 3 together (blasted CA) I also don't have any spare drive sprockets or idler wheels. My spares box is pretty small compared to you veterans.
I am going to have to practice at those welds, i have only heard about them being done with heated stretched sprue. Also, I've got some Mr. White Surfacer 1000 in a spray can. I am going to have to figure out how to use the sucker.

Hey Justin,
Just keep building those Dragon kits, you'll quickly fill up your spares box !!
One thing you should pick up is some Gunze Sangyo Mr. Surfacer 500, it's good for adding texture.
Just paint it on, let it start to set up and then use an old paint brush to add the texture.
Thin strips or rods of plastic stock are good for replicating weld beads, just glue down with CA and let dry.
Then apply liquid glue, let the plastic soften and then add the weld texture with an old exacto blade tip.
Practice the technique on some old scrap.

P.S. I've been reading alot about hard-edged and soft-edged 3 tone camo schemes. This will be my first one. Can you shed any light on this subject?

Thanks for the site links, they are super helpful. Whats the difference between Mr. Surfacer 1000 and 500? Although its fun and challenging to update older kits and make them look nicer, its a royal pain in the ass!
