Nice work David. In the picture below, the side weapon looks to be another .50 cal.MG (just compare the barrel to those of the top twin .50s )..Could be an option...Or maybe it's just me seeing things

I think it might be the angle that makes them look like additional .50 cals. I would suggest that the guns in that picture are 7.62mm Mk 21s (Navy rechambered M1919A4s). I'm pretty sure I've seen pictures with them either with M60s or Mk 21s.

My opinion is that both Mk. 21s and M60s were used.

Mk. 21 (?):

Mk.21 for reference:

M60:

Sorry but I can't get the photos to be linked right...

BTW: Nice work there, Dave! As for the chopper mounts I'll guess it's anybodys guess.

To say the truth, I've found nothing that could substantiate the .50 MG option anyway so going the M60/Mk21 way would be safer...

So the question is does anyone make an AM Mk21 barrel? If not I guess I'll go with the M60D?

For those thaty are interested I have been provided with a link to a page about the modifications made to the M1919A4 by the US Navy to make them Mk 21 Mod 0 machine guns.
The link is here warboats.org
I quiet like the idea of having these as the side weapons, so will see what I can do?
Cheers

Hi David,

Nice progres there!

Regarding the Mk.21:
How about cuting the flash suppressor from an M60 and adding it to the tip of an Browning barrel? Or is the Mk.21 suppressor longer?

Not sure if the other changes can be seen on a 1/35 gun. At least not once inside the PACV?

Cheers,

Erik,
To me the suppressor seems longer on the Mk.21 and it's been suggested to me to use the suppressor off of a XM177 (CAR 15) which looks longer but I've got to see if they have the vents/grooves all the way up or only part way up (don't know if that makes sence?)

According to what I've read on warboats.org, the Mk 21 flash suppressor should be 43.5 mm long in 1/35th scale...

Frenchy,
If I make it 43.5mm it might stick out a bit far??? maybe that's the 1/1 scale
cheers

Per the Warboats article, the flash suppressor is 6" long, or 4.35mm in 1:35 scale.

It's just a decimal point. It, by itself, has no value. How important could it be?

The flash suppressor from a XM-177 in the Dragon M-16 family quartermaster box measures in at just over 2mm.
The flash suppressor on a M60 from Dragon in their Vietnam War infantry weapons set comes in at about 3mm.
So to get the 4.35mm need it may well have to be scratched from some plastic rod?
Not sure if I can get a bit or rod to look like a suppressor and this is the bit that will be seen outside the window so it will need to look decent!
Anybody have any othr ideas?

At worst you can stick to your original plan and fit some M60s...

Hello all, I'm sorry for not updating recently but I'm afraid family keeps getting in the way of my modeling
I have managed to get some more work done so without anymore ado he goes.
I received the replacement propeller it's from a 1/48 Tamiya P-47M, this kit comes with 3 propeller choices so if you have this kit or wouldn't mind having it in your stash you aren't wasting the whole kit just to get a propeller.
It's a Curtiss Electric propeller which in 1/48th scale is 13ft and in 1/35th scale a bit over the 9ft we need, so the ends need cutting down and squaring off.
Here is the new propeller before adjustment next to the kit one.

And showing the better detail

The propeller as it is,is a puller prop and we need a pusher prop, so the spinner on the front has to be removed as well as the attaching rod at the back.

I filled in the hole where the spinner was with plastic tube so that I could reattach the mounting rod, trimmed down the spinner to a more flat shape as the PACV had and also cut 2mm off each end of the prop to give the correct 9ft span. In the photo one bladse pairt is cut the other isn't.

With the adjustments done the new propeller next to the old.

And in place to show how it will look.

I have also hollowed out the two exhuasts as I didn't like seeing them plugged everytime I looked at them.

Finally for now I have added the bit to the tops of the two vertical tail fins. The top part of the orange beacon will be masked off for painting.

My great thanks go to Saul for providing the propeller and details of work needed to correct it for the PACV.
And just for some interest this web link shows the making of the original master pattern, the text is in Spanish I believe and it does say it was being made for VLS back then.
Cheers

Time for a little update.
I've made the side control levers

Glued the gunners platform in place and painted.

The two instrument panels are in and painted.

I have replaced the boarding ladders as I didn't like my first attempt and I have also replaced the square box to the side of the rear puff port as the kit one seemed the wrong shape.

I've added an aerial and the radar to the roof.

Converted a couple of M1919's to Mk 21 Mod 0's, sorry the photos aren't great but I'm quite happy with them.

And finally I've decided on my crew and started to paint them.

I think I can see the end now? Not a lot detail left to add now. I'm going to work on painting the crew and cabin area so that I can get the roof fixed on and then paint on the outside.
Thanks for looking.

Absolutely fantastic work!! You are truly leading the way in accurizing this kit!!!!!

Thank you for all your hard work and for taking the time to photograph and share it with us! Masterpiece Models should cut you in for some commission as I'm sure that you're helping to sell some PACV kits!

Can't wait to see what comes next!!

Keep up the great work!!

Regards and Aloha,

Johnny B.

I'm afraid I haven't done much more on my PACV due to many family issues and it may be a little while before I get a chance to get back into it, but this post is just to let those interested know that all of the PACV walk around photos are now up on line at tanksandthings.com
Cheers

Heya, David,

Great to hear from you! I hope that things work out on the family side of it and that you are able to get back to your fantastic PACV build ASAP.

Lookin' forward to seeing the next stages --- this has been a great and helpful ride.

Take care, now!

Hello all,
It's been a long time since I have been able to do any modeling, sadly my father died in August and since then I've been busy help my mum sort everything out.
The good news is that I have finally managed to get back to my workbench.
I have got all of the interior done on the PACV with figures in place.
Have a look at the photos below and let me know if I have got anything obviously wrong or missed anything out?
The next step is to close her up so I need to know if things need changing or adding now.
Thanks for looking and any ideas you might have.
Regards
David

Hi David,
I’m sorry to hear your father passed away. I hope you all find the strength to deal with this.
About the PACV; I’m no expert but I’d say this looks very promising, and you put a lot of time and effort in it; I can hardly wait to see it finished!

Keep it up

Best regards
Mark

Howdy David,

I'm sorry to hear about your loss thought it's good to see you and the PACV back on Armorama again. Mine is of course still resting in the box. God job on the interior!

BTW: are you interested in a copy of "Riverine Force" from The Illustrated History of The Vietnam War series? I got hold of one extra a couple of weeks ago and thought of you (we discussed it earlier in this thread). PM/email me if your interested.

@Mark: Speeking of Vietnam and rivers. How's that Quad fifty raft coming along?

Cheers,
/E
