Hi Erik,
well the raft....I did finish the bridge erection boat but the pontoons for the raft I only finished part of those and I wasn’t satisfied with them. Then I started MecModels and all of my modelling-time went into that. But who knows…one day I’ll finish it. (glad you didn’t forget about it)
Best regards
Mark

Mark,
Thanks for the comments and I don't mind you hijacking the thread. I'm also going to be placing an order with you for your vietnam building and some other bits as well. When is your vietnam bar due for release?
Erik,
Thanks to you too and I've PM'ed you.
Cheers
David

Hi, David,
I'm really sorry to hear about the loss of your Dad --- I hope that you, your Mom and your family are all hanging in there...
We've missed you and your amazin' and inspiring work on your PACV --- it is good to have you back, amigo! You are writing the book on accurizing this kit --- cannot wait to see her buttoned up, painted and plopped down into a Mekong diorama.
Keep up the great work --- hang in there, David.
Regards and Aloha,
Johnny B.

Johnny,
Thanks for the very kind words, I might be taking the lead but I'm sure the best is yet to come from everyone else.
Hopefully you won't have to wait so long for the next update!
Cheers

Well I did promise not to take so long with the next update so here it is.
I have sealed in the cabin and added a few more bits to the outside. I added some Evergreen half round strip where the walls joined the roof as it wasn't a great fit and although it's a bit of artistic licence I think it looks ok!
I have primed the whole thing and also added one coat of Vallejo model air 71021 Black green as this is supposed to be Marine Corps Green? I'm not too sure about the colour myself, what are your thoughts on it?
Anyway on with the photos.
As always your comments and suggestions are always welcome.
Cheers
David

She's lookin' good, David! Glad to see the Beast primed and base-coated! Man, you have put an amazin' amount of work into this kit!! Thanks again for documenting the process for us all.
Were you going to pose it on a diorama? If so, what were you thinking?
Keep up the great work on the painting --- she's coming to life!

Thanks for taking the time to reply Johnny.
I can finally see a light at the end of the tunnel with this model, I just hope I don't foul it up some how on the final stretch!
In answer to your question yes I do want to put it into a simple diorama I'm thinking either going across a flat stretch of water with reeds growing out of it and being blown over by the air or just coming down a PSP ramp into the water as if starting a mission.
I'm far happier with the colour today it seems to have darkend overnight.
Cheers
David

David, I've been mostly lurking during your build. You've given me lots of information and inspiration. I've got the same kit and have similar plans RE: the PSP ramp. The problem is finding some PSP plates in 1:35 (or even 1:32). No one seems to make them. You would think that this would be a rather popular item. Have you had any luck sourcing them?

Doug,
I have got some Photo Etched PSP in 1/35th from Accurate Armour here in the UK they come in a pack of 12 interlocking 9 foot panels.
Also I have some old Verlinden PE ones as well, I don't know if they are still available?
Also thank you for your very kind comments.
I'm in the process of trying to correct the decals for the PACV the lips of the mouth on the front should be more red and the Stars & Stripes flags don't have the correct number of stars.
I have scanned the decals into Photoshop and changed everything and I'm going to try printing my own decals on white inkjet decal paper so wish me luck!
Regards
David

David,
I have studied this conflict for many years and I have never come across solid ref. photos of these vehicles. I was able to ask a reliable source about the interior color. A close friend of mine's family member worked on these vehicles at the factory. He said that he was not positive of the exact color but that it was light ( off white -or- the light green of M113 Interiors ). He stated that they were painted in a very light color to help with the fact that it was dark inside the cabin. I hope this information is helpfull. Not very specific but it should eliminate the possibility of the interior matching the exterior.

Well it's time for another update.
I think I've managed to get a fair bit done, I mixed up some lighter paint and sprayed it in the middle of different panels. This is the first time I've tried doing this and I've got to say I like the outcome.
I've also put all the decals in place, the flags and mouth are ones I printed onto white decal paper the rest are the ones that came with the kit. I think they look fine and once I've done some weathering I think they will blend in ok.
I've started doing the detail painting but there is still more to go.
I've removed the masking from the windows but I still need to touch up where the paint has come away in places.
Again any comments are always welcome.
Cheers

That is excellent! One question, though: are you sure the lift fan (or, I guess, the top of the fan cover) was painted red? That seems to scream 'Target!' from the air.

Thanks for stopping by Doug.
The reason I painted the lift fan red is firstly the fan in the PACV at Bellingham Maritime Museum looks like it was red, secondly I figured it was something people should stay away from so red for danger and also to add a bit of colour to the model. It will be toned down with weathering though. Also I don't think the Americans were worried about the NVA air force encroaching into the south, so camouflage from the air wasn't top priority I guess?
I will see how it looks after weathering and go from there.
Cheers

Hiya, David,
Glad to see your PACV progressing nicely!! Have you floated 'er around the bathtub yet (just kidding!)?
The red fan blades do add a splash of color! How heavy do you plan on weathering the craft?
Is the gunner in the twin .50 tub the gunner figure from the Tamiya PBR kit?
Can't wait to see the weathering on the outside of the craft! No we need Vladi at Bravo 6 to sculpt some GI's with a V.C. prisoner riding on the deck on the outside of the craft...
Keep up the great work, David --- this has been an awesome thread!
And have a Merry Christmas!
Regards and Aloha,
Johnny B.

Johnny,
Thanks for stopping by, in answer to your questions the figure manning the twin .50s started out as the figure from the Tamiya PBR but I ended up just using his arms the legs, body and head are all Verlinden from my spares box.
As for weathering I'm not sure how heavy I'm going to go yet, I think I'll take it easy at first as I'm now paronoid I'll ruin all my hard work at the last stage! But I do want it to look used and at least a bit dirty.
Some Bravo 6 figures would be great on the outside, I'm thinking of trying to make a Stokes Litter to have down one side.
Merry Christmas to you and yours
Cheers
David

David,
I guess you're right about the actual danger from the air. The red is so glaring on something painted olive drab that my first thought is that it "must" be wrong.
But I went back and looked at the Bellingham photos, and you are correct. I'll never doubt again

Looking at your pictures, David and what is also cool about this craft/kit is that there are plenty of big windows so people can get a good glimpse of all the work you put into the interior and the figures --- unlike most other tanks or even aircraft, where much of the work disappears once the vehicle is buttoned up for paint...
Keep up the good work!
Regards and Aloha,
Johnny B.

Well I think I'm just about ready to call this one finished and ready for its base.
I've weathered it up but would like to know what you think, I haven't sealed it all on yet so can still adjust if you all hate and tell me to!
I have added navigation lights on either side and windscreen wipers on the front.
As always please let me know what you think bad or good.
Cheers

Nice work, David! Good to see your PACV nice and muddied up, amigo! I especially like the mud on the skirts and footprints on the upper hull.
Can you tell us how you went about weathering your PACV?
Keep up the great work --- can't wait to see her swamping V.C sampans on the Mekong!

Johnny,
Thanks for dropping by and your comments.
The weathering consisted of firstly a dark wash into all the recesses and then I used Mig pigments mainly dried mud but also vietnam earth as well. I just built them up in thin layers until I was happy. I figured it should be a bit mud covered where the crew or passengers might walk.
When it gets its base if I have it on water or going into water I will try and use gloss varnish to act as splashing on the rubber skirt.
Cheers
David

Hiya, David,
Thanks for the painting detail! Like I said, she's looking great!
Question, there's a box with a probe attached to the radar mast --- the front portion is sitting on top of a an upside-down U-shaped piece behind the gunner's tub?
Just curious...
Can't wait to see the next phase. Keep up the great work, David.

Excellent work, David. Very inspiring for those of us who haven't felt up to tackling one of these. I've been collecting references for years to build one in 1/72, but just never convinced myself to get started. Yours has inspired me.
