You know what happens when SF dudes get near Krylon...

Mount it on an ALICE frame.

No worries Nick, glad I can help. I can't wait to see what your build looks like. (I suggest starting now, since you are happy with having multiple builds at the same time )

I thought about painting the figures, but since UCP is a pain to paint, I'd like to paint them in Multicam. Is this a realistic option, or should I stick with UCP?

Anirudh

Arun, I would LOVE to start now but I can't! I have to finish my other builds first!!! But I can always gather the info now..

As for painting camo....I don't have the time to, so I use decals! I recently bought some Crossdelta ones and they look better than the Shiniseguma's ..whatever the brand's called

A camouflaged quickie saw it is then! How'd you guys mount it on the Alice frame, straps or elastic cord?

Also heres the stuff I've collected to build "Thor" along with some other cool things:

Thanks for letting me know about Crossdelta, Nick, but luckymodel doesn't say they have multicam. In any case, I like the challenge, although my eyes probably don't.

Hi Anirudh,

Great Build, If you fancy having a go with some Multi-Cam decals, drop me a note. I got some made up last year by Parks Decals, colours are not too bad at all and they go on great with some decal soft and cotton buds.

Chris.

thanks for the offer Chris. I'll try painting the pattern first and see how it goes. I'll let you know if I want the decals.

To mount the quickie saw, I scratched an ALICE pack frame based on some photos. I didn't find any dimensions so I approximated based on some 1/35th ALICE packs.
Here are the pics:

What do you think, Rob. Does it look accurate?

Another small update. I built a quickie saw from some photos I found online. The body is laminated plastic sheet sawed and sanded to size and shape, and handles and arm are plastic rod and strip. Is this similar to what you carried Rob?

Im still thinking of a way to make the blade and its guard. Any ideas?

Without going out to my car to get my ALICE (I take it to the gym, but it's too hot to move today) it certainly looks the part. I thought you'd use an old Tamiya one, but this one probably looks better.

The quickie saw is coming along as well. I love it when people get farther along with projects that I started and never finished. I was thinking of using a Dremel abrasive disc, worn down to a nub. Should be about the right size then. As for the shield, perhaps start with a rough shape, and use a rotary Dremel saw to cut out a notch for the blade, and then finish up shaping the shield around the notch. You should see if anyone wants to cast that for you. Can't wait to see more.

Honestly I forgot I had any Tamiya ALICE packs and only removed when I'd built the frame and wanted to check the size.
A Dremel saw is a good idea, it would even have the right colour and serrated points. I've made a trial shield with some plastic card and strip. Its alright, but Im going to look for a better way of building one.
How was the saw strapped to the frame ( blade up or down etc)
I'll look into to finding someone to cast this for me as well.

Another question for ya: Would you have carried the hoolie tools in that storage box on the rear shelf or in the pack they came with?

just to clarify - I didn't mean using the serrated blade. It would be far too large I think. I'm talking about the brown abrasive cutting discs. They wear down to a realistic size, plus they have a bit of texture to them.

The blade was mounted facing up. I don't suppose it mattered though. Once we got to the LCC we would take it off of our backs, start it, then put it back on. At the objective we use it with it still attached to the frame.

It was mounted with straps, whether military or just REI flat nylon tube I don't remember.

Thanks for clearing that up, I do have some abrasive discs which I'll look into using. Im going to paint the frame and the saw before strapping the two together with some lead foil straps.
Since you used the saw still strapped to the frame I'm assuming the handles of the saw were up against the back of the person carrying them.
Just our of curiosity did you guys just take a saw from maintenance or buy your own and ship them over?

Thanks Gijs, glad you like it. I'm going to start the Marsoc GMV after this one, soon I'll have a whole line of humvees!

Heres one way of making the shield and saw. Its just a plastic sheet shield and and the blade is some thinned down disc piece from a DML Abrams. Its not fixed yet so I can still swap it for the dremel one.

Any comments on the saw would be much appreciated.

Although I'm fond of saying "If it doesn't have a trigger it doesn't fall in my purview." thesaw did have a trigger, but actually was the responsibility of the 18C (engineer, or demo sergeant) While we have our own breaching equipment, something like that, or the broco rig, probably came from support.

I can't really find a suitable place for the saw and the pack in the cargo bed, but no where really looks like a safe, logical place to store them. Would it be realistic to have them separate in the bed?
They sit a little better that way round, but I think it might make carrying them on a pack redundant.

Anirudh

Edit: I also added the trigger for the saw, thanks for reminding me!

Another update from me. This is my first attempt at painting multicam, and is just a trial attempt. I used vallejo acrylics and mixed colours that matched the my references.

I'm pretty pleased with the result but I think theres too much green. Whats everyones opinion?

Thanks Gijs. I have tried to tone down the green with a couple of brown oil washes, so now it looks more olive drab and slightly more like photos I've seen. The other two guys have now had their camo applied and I did use more of the browns on it, and they look better. I'll post some photos later today

Thanks Pete! Its getting to the end of this particular project with just some details needing to be done.

So another question (sorry about all these, and thanks to anyone who helped!):
Would the vehicle a roll of barbed wire on the hood?
I've seen some photos like this but they appear to be in Iraq where roadblocks are probably more common.

A little update for today. The other crew members' camouflage painted and weathered a bit. The laptop has had it screen added after a discussion with 18bravo on another thread.

Comments appreciated!

Another question: Is it likely that a crew would use an empty ammo box as storage for m4 mags, flashbangs or other items?
I have a voyager mk19 ammo box which can be left open, so I'd like to fill it with some stanag magazines and a couple of flashbangs and keep it in the front by the radio. Realistic or not?

we did use some empty .50cans filled with mags, in our vehicles
i think u can use a Mk19 can aswell, but its a little to Big, to keep it in front of the radio, i think

right now i'm working on some EMIRATES waterboxes,(widely used in afghanistan) they are almost finished any intrest of putting them online??

Glad you like it Gijs, you're right, the figures do give some life to the model.
The ammo box Im using is the small mk19 that came in the voyager set which is only slightly larger than a 50 cal. box.
I'd love to have the water boxes if youre putting them up here, you can never really have too many!

I've added the smoke grenade launchers on the roof, and hopefully today I'll start adding the last few details to the interior, then maybe close it up.
Hows your painting going?

Very nice. That looks like the new style of box. Here's the old style from 2002. I know it looks a little rough, but I cut them out and put them in my 1/24 Hiluxes and they looked great. I spent quite a bit of time cleaning them up. Scroll further to see the original:

Thank you for the water boxes, I'll use some for "thor" as theres probably enough water on this one already.
Im not sure what else to do about the seats. I checked the parcel no. with royal mail and they said it has left the uk already. Hopefully you'll get it soon.

Ok then, Im at the point of adding the crews M4s, and would the front passenger carry his between his legs with the barrel up? or is that unsafe?
