1979
Somebody states he wasn't born than.............
What a harsh way to find out that, starting as an officer in 1976, I am an old man now.
1976???? I joined the army in '77 so yes,you ARE old!! Hahaha

Some more color changes to the rocks and some more layers of groundwork.
Next layer of putty on the corpse has been cleaned up and a thin coat of buff added to spot check for flaws. I added his hair and StG44 ammo pouch. I am debating his field gear as he was a PzGren he probably would not have much besides his ammo and weapon. I may sculpt a breadbag and canteen though. I wonder should I make it fallen forward as he died while in forward movement? Momentum and all that.
And I do see lots of flaws including a rather obvious seem on his boots from the desert boot guy he used to be so out comes the putty again.

Hi Jerry,
thanks for keeping us in the loop!
Regarding the personal gear, I would rather see gravity as the major and ultimate force. If he had a Kochgeschirr on top of his Brotbeutel, it would have prevented the BB to topple over, but the corpse once flat on the bottom, the bag might adopt a slightly inclined position, not much though, as it is attached by 3 straps and the KG (and waterbottle) as well.
The issue of the cloth on the sleeve has been brought up already. The only thing I would flatten a bit is the part near the wrist which would perhaps lie flatter on the bone. Just my opinion!!
Cheers

hello Jerry ,
To me it's like he was blown away by an exploding grenade or mortar shell ??? Yes , great idea to make the breadbag and cantine fallen forward because gravity plays a certain role to.

Thanks guys.
He is wearing a late model smock so that's why I made the sleeve puffy at the bottom. The smocks were made with kind of stiff material and didn't go flat like the wool uniforms. The elastic gather at the wrist would make the sleeve puff out a bit.
He won't have the kochgeshirr but probably the Brotbeutel mit wasserflasche. And I need to add the strap across his back for the StG44 pouches. Slowly but surely.

Got some basic layers of paint on him. But now I realize I forgot the foliage loops on the smock. I will add those when I put the strap across his back for the StG44 pouches.
Pretty far from an Afrika Korps guy now.
Lots of work left here with shading, etc but I am on the way.
I always cringe when I see my work under huge magnification,
unfortunately my eyes just ain't that good any more. Hope fully experience and some tricks can fool the viewers eye once it's done.

Few more layers of paint on. One more color for the smock and that's fini. This is the first time I actually painted the oak leaves into the oak leaf pattern. I have some new brushes(finally) and they really make a difference to me.
Still need the dirt/mud color from the road to go on the boots and of course... paint the flesh areas. I no,I am doing things backwards, don't know why!!
J
You may notice he turned into an Scharfuhrer and I added the mag.strap and foliage loops.

Hi Jerry - I appreciate you including so many images - the wall and now the figure. It's like an on line model building workshop! I'm not very good with figures, so I'm paying attention! I've assembled a group of figures to use but have been too much of a chicken to try building and painting them!
Cheers

Hi Nick,
do as I did....find someone to team up with!! He should be good at figures, I'd say!
My teammate is the "master of cyanoacrylate". A thing I'll never be I'm afraid!

Chris,Romain and Nick,
Thanks for the words of encouragement. I always can use it for sure!
Nick,When I first started building armor way waaay back I used to throw away the figures if they were included and glue the hatches shut. Then I worked up the courage to give them a try and now here I am decades later and ....I still suck at it!!
Hahaha, well.more accurately I don't suck at it but I'm also not the best but anyway.... give it a go. Someone as talented as you can certainly get some nice figs going. Look at Mike Roof,he never did figs either and now his little people are way better than mine are.

I like the painting on the figure . I know from my own experience that it is really hard to paint a German camouflage pattern on trousers and jackets , guess i need a lot more practice
Well done Master Jerry and keep up the good work !

Don't feel alone brother!! I need a lot more practice as well. Notice I saved the flesh parts for last? That is because I am kind of hesitant to paint them as I still have problems with doing that.

Yes i did . I have also that problem my friend , making beautiful well executed landscapes and to ruin the diorama afterwards with badly painted figures. Painting the faces or flesh parts is even more a burdon for me .
It is a job for specialists !

Quite an entrance you guys made there hahaha. Cool photo.
That's one nice looking...well, corpse.
That was a weird thing to say. But all kidding aside it did come out great. For some reason the hair stands out the most to me, very well done. I tried that a while back and the outcome was an Albert Einstein type of thing. I also like how you did the bottom of his smock, it looks great.
Looking forward to what comes next!

Jerry- I've been watching this project progress and it is really shaping up well. I particularly like the figure's pose- very realistic and the camouflage painting is second to none. I think your way of doing the hair always suits figures brilliantly- and I think you've nailed it again here.
PS- Great picture of your home-coming from Panama- truly epic entrance!

Thanks Karl,
Your words always buck me up,so to speak. I look forward to them.
That was quite a day for me as my chute was packed badly and I had a major twist in my risers. Took a long time to get it corrected and I was right in front of the bleachers!! I was the hero and made a nice landing though...to applause!
It was nice to be back home.

Hi Jerry,
were they so badly funded that they had to make you jump instead of nice commercial flights with ice-cooled drinks and pretty girls??
Seriously, thanks for the impressive pic! Brings back good memories!!
Your figure looks great, and the other gentlemen are right..."your" hair will never cease to amaze me!! Well done!
Speaking of "well done", I must say that your flesh colour looks terrific!!! He looks dead!! And that comes from the impeccable pose AND the yellowish "sick" skin colour!!!
The camo is great, but I can't really understand why people are that scared to paint it!? It's easy enough...just a huge lot of work!!!!!!
Looking forward to seeing progress....and do us a biiiig favour, please make our day(s) and don't lose interest!!
Cheers
