Ahhh..multi part individual link tracks... as if I did not already have a problem finishing kits with 1-part links...

Such a beast of a vehicle, I'll keep an eye out at the next couple of shows..

Back to the 251D Stuka zu Fus..trying to get it on the table at Armorcon on the 24th.
I got rid of the baby poop brown but am not thrilled with the depth and intensity of the darker brown either... I tried distressing the brown with the fiberglass bristle 'pen' but did not get the effect I wanted. Oil dots did not change the tone much either.
This is the kit that I keep throwing techniques and product at and nothing sticks...
I may still lightly airbrush some lighter brown into the centers of these.

I have a number of built, but unpainted kits on the shelf. I remember building the Tamiya Kubelwagen and Scwimmwagen about three years back, but never got to putting any paint on it.

So I've decided to finish the Kubelwagen for this campaign. As the doors are completely glued up I'd surely have problems painting and weathering the interior so the easiest way to cover it up, thus am using the canvas top from Mantis Miniatures. Good thing I didn't install the windscreen as yet.



Primed it with black, followed with a oxide color on top. For the base coat I used Wooden Deck Tan from a Tamiya rattle can.



I just put on basic colors for the interior. Will be going no further than this since it will be covered by the canvas top.

A little precious metal for my shelf from Armorcon yesterday.
Stuka zu Fus took gold and the Wiesel took a solid silver, which I am more pleased with given that the AMPS system emphasizes aftermarket additions and corrections. None of which I used, so those points are for construction, paint and weathering.

Congrats on the hardware. I am a firm believer that an award winning model can be made without adding AM parts. I rarely use them unless kit supplied PE is included. Solid construction techniques painting and weathering is what modelling is really all about in my opinion. Very nice work and congrats again.

Before the AMPS rules defense strike force shows up and disagrees with the 'must use aftermarket to medal', I do have to qualify that their guidelines define the levels of modeler as

"BASIC – modelers new to the hobby or with basic modeling skills. The BASIC level is
the introductory level to the AMPS system. Modelers at this level generally build their
models with minimal tweaks, and often have never competed before or are new to the
hobby. It allows members who are developing their modeling skills to be evaluated and
encouraged through the feedback provided by the AMPS judging system. As with all
other entrants, BASIC Level entrants are encouraged to volunteer for judging.
INTERMEDIATE – modelers with average to above average skill. Modelers at this level
generally make some modifications or conversion to their work or use commercial
upgrades
INTERMEDIATE modelers may have been promoted from BASIC, won
awards at other shows, or chose to enter at this level from the start. An
INTERMEDIATE modeler is someone to whom some or all of the following apply:
Adds photo-etched and/or resin details
Uses aftermarket conversion kits
Scratchbuilds details and makes modifications to actualizing kits
Uses reference material for actualizing ideas
Improves models by cross-kitting
Builds full resin kits
Displays models on complementary bases or with figures
ADVANCED – modelers with more highly-developed skills, whose entries are heavily
reworked, actualized, or include non-commercial parts or modifications. The evaluations
of this class are more strenuous. An ADVANCED modeler does most of the things
expected of INTERMEDIATE level modelers plus some or all of the following:
Scratchbuilds, using references
Casts own replacement parts
Builds and paints at a high skill level
Presents models on elaborate bases, sometimes with accompanying information
Uses materials and space artistically "

so yeah.. you do not HAVE to use aftermarket parts or make major changes to a kit to earn a medal at Basic or earn a bronze or even a silver in intermediate.

Even IMPS who has long claimed that a simple model built with a high degree of skill and well finished can win, knows fully well that is not the reality on the table at their shows.

In the end result it is both a beauty contest and a crap shoot. Do the people judging your model know anything about it and like what they see? For IPMS style shows, the crap shoot part is a measure of 'who else shows up that day'.

I'm long past trying to 'build to win', but a little bling is always nice.

More progress made on the turret. The guns are finished. The missile racks are partially assembled though I'm going to leave them off until after I get the painting done.





I left off the tracking(?) radar dish off the front until after I'm a little further along in the painting process.

I'm still working on the search radar on the rear of the turret.

It's getting close to painting time!!

Thanks for the kind words, it got edged out for an award at the IPMS show yesterday by a newer kit with lights included (Meng T90).
One thing I like about the AMPS judging system is that each kit is judged against a standard, not against the rest of the table.

It is a fun little kit and I am glad I pulled it out, dusted it off and finished.
I still have the TOW vers. to finish, but it was not as far along. I see the newer Revell of Germany set of Air Defense kits and am on the lookout for those as well.
I just wish the tracks were better.

progress on another old shelf queen, too far along to use in the sci-fi campaign.

Unfortunately I will have to withdraw from this Campaign. The Charger has gone through four massive paint failures, and now a decal failure. The "State Trooper" decal on the right front fender partially slid off & dried that way. The replacement decals from Round2 will not arrive in time to complete this cursed car by the Campaign Completion Date.

I, too, have had to withdraw but there is always next year! I'm just happy that I got a modicum of work done.

The good part about not finishing in this campaign is that you already have a project to complete for the 2017 edition . . .

I will enlist when that campaign starts with a long shelved Tamiya Sherman that has gathered plenty of dust.
