Three different kind of Merkavas on the same photo: IIB's and D's (from my former company) of the 7th and Merkava IV's of (probably) the 401st Armored Brigades during operation "Protective Edge" in 2014. In July 2016 (as the last regular armored brigade) the 7th has completed its transition to the latest version of Merkava (4M).

What an awesome thread. For what is a (relatively) small force, the sheer number of different vehicles in IDF service is pretty amazing.

Do they still have any of the upgraded M60-based tanks in service or have they all been retired?

The regular army phased them out in 2004 already, but they remained in reserve till 2014. "Magach" based bridge layers and M88's continue to serve, as well as the "Magach 5" based "Pereh".

If you have any pics of the latest configuration reserve M60's please feel free to share! How are reserves utilized in the IDF? Are they assigned to larger reserve formations or when activated, are they use to supplement active duty units?

IDF MLRS MAR 290, and would you believe it, there is an interior shot of the turret... we are helped by the fact there is a surviving example available to examine.

I'm not quite sure I understand what you mean, but the last two "Magach" variants leaving service were the 7C of the 500th brigade (when it went defunct in 2003) and the 6B of the 401st (transitioned to Merkava IV in 2004).

Actually both, but since the reserve army is much bigger than the active duty one, the former is the standard.

Well, thanks Kylie. Never seen/heard about it before...

The IDF's first attempt to provide much better protection for the infantry resulted in the "Nagmashot": a "Nagmash" (APC) based on the "Shot".

A "Nagmachon" is basically an improved "Nagmashot", which can be recognized by its raised superstructure. These are early variants.

Mid-production "Nagamachons".

I wonder how the teeth of that drive sprocket got shaven off...

One of mine all-time favorites, the late-production "Nagmachon", AKA the "Doghouse" variant.

The lack of reactive armor blocks and tactical markings (and the presence of female instructor(s) for that matter...) indicate that this vehicle is used for training.

This one looks like a freshly converted (or overhauled) vehicle.

The lack of slat armor allows us to see the "Doghouse".

This one seems to be equipped with an additional armor plate on the rooftop.

I wonder if that 'extra armor plate' on the second picture isn't just a gunner's shield folded down; similar to the one on the third picture?

After having another look, it actually looks like a FOLDED UP armor plate...I don't think it's a gunner's shield, it's way too big for that, plus a roof mounted MG/HMG wouldn't make any since there are already 4 of them sticking out of the doghouse...

OK, now I'm sure it's a folded up armor plate. Mystery solved...
