Started a new little dio about the trials and tribulations of the unsung heroes of WWII in all Armies. The telephone operators/linemen.
Since I had some stuff along that line that I had developed when I made the masters for Greymatterfigures Sdkfz251/11 conversion I went ahead with the German version of this very common operation. I wanted to use some of the Alpine figs I had accumulated for a while but after having seen them used, unaltered all over the place decided to try my hand at some mods.
Here we see the spool carrier.

Simple conversion using all the stock parts but bending at the waist and turning his head. More drama but little bang!

Further along now.

His buddy will be helping play out the wire on the spool.
Got some work done on the spool, etc but it is all just sitting in place to facilitate painting further on.

Have a great weekend fellas!

This sounds interesting! Reminds me of that German signals crew from Masterbox, but IIRC they were all in summer uniform. Gonna keep watching.

Looking great again. I'd love .
To have a quick look at your workbench and a "2 minute free shopping time" in your spare parts boxes".
You produce diorama's as an assemby line without giving in on the quality of the work. Great!

Nice morph job Jerry looking great !!!
Not telling you what or how to build but I have one small suggestion . Since you're building a wire team could you replace or sling his rifle [ second dude ] with a lay-up stick/wire raising pole , long pole with a " u " shaped metal piece on the end for putting wire up in trees , buildings etc .
Just a suggestion .

Dan-thanks for the kind words buddy!
Jack-Yes,these guys are also in summer(Normandy) but they have smocks on. The MB guy is OK but the wire rig is way out of scale and clunky looking.
Hans-Thanks man. If you take the time and money to fly over here maybe we can work a deal! Hahahahaa. Thanks for the very generous comment.
Cheyenne-I know exactly what you mean. I made one of those for my dio about Peipers' guys evacuating the pocket around Stoumont/Chateux Friod Cour years ago. This crew will not have the luxury of doing that as they are in a hurry and under fire as well.
Thanks guys for making your valuable input known! Lurkers, thanks as well for the hundreds of views.

Jerry, looks great and should make an interesting scene.
i use .015 solder, rather than copper wire. It’s much more flexible and about the right scale. I use it for every applicatiin, including twisting 3 or 4 strands to make tow cables.

Solder is great for some stuff I agree. I find it very hard to use for certain things because it is almost impossible to keep straight. For bendy things though, yes,it is awesome.

The assistant will be helping to play out the cable. He is carrying linemans' tools in a spare breadbag with strap.

The team leader is orchestrating the movement.

Moving along!

Changed the MP40 sling to a more believable position and shaved some fat off this young mans' chin. I think I will remove more, plus some from his chipmunk cheeks as well!

Lineman number 3 is under wayto complete the team. He has the spare cable spool and the field phone. Waiting his turn. Just tacked together so far though.

Hi, longtime lurker here.
Very nice work,as usual, I follow all your builds.
Can I ask, where did you source the brass cable reel flanges ?

Nice to have you chime in Sir!
The spool ends are from a PE set I had made for an older project. Sadly, the guy that did it for me is no longer among the living.

I can't leave you alone for a few months without you coming up with another brilliant story!

Great storyline and your figures are magnificent! Since we are talking figures, I am looking for a 1/28 (or close) WWI German flyer to stand in as Baron von Richtoven... any suggestions?

Like I said, great mind, great work!

An interesting play on the thankless job of these fellows was seen in the movie "Enemy at the Gates".

Great choice for injecting your signature dynamism into the figs & scene Jerry, looking really good. I recently read how some Victoria Crosses awarded in WW1 were earned by runners/specialists ducking & weaving crossfire to lay phone lines for forward observers deep into no-mans-land & as if that wasn’t hairy enough they sometimes ran into their opposite numbers trying to reach the same vantage point, with predictable results. No doubt Iron Crosses of varying classes were similarly awarded in both WW1 and WW2. Not much room for negotiation when ordered to get out there though - like “Can’t we just call back later?”

Mike and Ian,
Thanks for the generous comments guys. I had forgotten about that scene in the movie but, yes, these guys were in the front lines almost as much as Infantry sometimes.

Yes,absolutely correct. Believe it or not,Hitler was a runner during the first war and was awarded the Iron Cross for bravery while performing those duties. Not many of those were given out to enlisted guys back then and he was justifiable proud of it.Hate to give the guy any credit but, hey,he did earn it
