Very nice paintjob on the StuG IV, Tom . I really like your modifications. The balken cross on the rear mudguard is unusual, but it could have happened. Looking forward to see more. This will be an excellent looking StuG IV I am sure.

The Tristar tracks have a good reputation, but I have not tried them myself, so cannot say for sure. As I recall the tracks were made in both 36 cm and 40 cm width - which version Tristar have modelled should be stated on the box(?). Also not all manufacturers are exactly true to scale so dryfitting is a must. Hope this helps a bit.

Jan , nice entry into the campaign. This early version should be with zimmerit I think. That said I would probably do it without like you.

Beautiful Panzer IV, Mark. I like the screens. A nice additional detail in that scale. Looking forward to see it with some paint on.

Jesper, thanks! I was just playing with fading on that cross - it ought to be on the hull but the fuel-can rack is in the way so I opted to move it... And the Tristar tracks are the 40cm ones. I'll save them for a IV Ausf F but I thought it was odd that they could fit both a III and a IV given how little interchangeability there was in German tanks!

@ Tom: nice paint job, what pressure are you using? My compressor has a pressure gauge but no way to adjust.

@ Rodolfo: was there much trimming to be able to insert the interior, especially in the engine campartment.

@ Eetu: I am still painting bogies and road wheels the old fashion way (one at a time) I will need to try your method (question, does that wheel mask work:) and the handle that you are using as a hand hold, what is holding it in place? I have used a drop of cinoacrylite but it does not work all the time.

@ Jan: you and that magnifing scale is just amazing how you can see and hold the parts to accomplish anything .

@ Tutorca: I always admire scratch building, how do you plan to keep the paint from clogging the wire screen?

@ Roman: that is a nice clean build that you have there, mine usually have glue marks at least some where that everyone can see at this point.

Hi Bob,

I'm spraying Tamiya acrylics, thinned about 30-50 percent depending on colour, and the guage is set on 15psi. However, I also have a thumb-screw valve at the base of the brush so I can lower the pressure - there's no way of knowing exactly what it is set at other than "full on" or "full closed".

For the base coat of yellow I used it set open for maximum coverage, with rather more thinners because I find Tamiya XF-60 to be a bit thicker than other colours like red-brown for some reason. In fact, it's a real pain to spray because it tends to clog more than their other paints...

Bear in mind I also added some Earth thinned very heavily (maybe 75-80 percent?) around the lower extremities.

Hi Tom.

If you are getting clogging you need to thin the paint more, or use higher pressures in your airbrush. I would try the thinning more first. I generally use 60/40 or 50/50 depending on the weather and whether they are Tamiya or Gunze.

Not trying to tech my Grandmother how to suck eggs however..

Tom, thanks for the information. It looks like I need to just play some more with the a/b and compressor, I just found the manual for mine and the adjustment is kind of cheesy that is what I get for being cheap

@Jesper - From what I read the first batch of L48 JPz-IV did not have Zimmerit. All the original L70's had it. Both versions did away with it sometime in later 1944. Also that year, the last L48 were built (or rebuilt?) and the second machinegun port added to the drivers side.

@Bob R I will convert you YET!!! Just tell yourself that size is all in the mind....

Construction of the regular kit parts was put on hold while I dealt with the situation of leaving the hatches open. I found some very nice pictures of a JPz-IV interior and used them as a model for a simplified interior. First I had to get the area with the missing fender taken care of.

Next was to start on the interior firewall and floor.

A few details added from my references. A crude transfer case, fuel tank and the drive shaft tunnel.

I tried to photograph into the interior but had limited success. I'll have to play with the lighting some after I add a few more details near the open hatches.

Cheers,
Jan

Bob, the problems you cite are why they made Optivisors (4X - 15X) and an entire battery of appropriate tools. Not to mention some home made tools, jigs and fixtures that can come in handy. Here's a quick shopt of about half of what I have.

Wheel mask, you mean the likes of Quick Wheel? Looking at some reviews, they seem to be working nicely.
I'm intending to paint the wheels by hand on my model, though. Looking at all those wheels, I'm starting to think I should have bought some kind of masks...

The handle? Oh, those are just pieces of styrofoam with the wheels stuck on cocktail sticks. Actually, I still airbrushed the parts one at a time to ensure I got every nook and cranny covered. The cocktail sticks didn't fit the drive sprockets, road wheels and return rollers straight out of the package, though. For the sprockets, I simply drilled a hole in the back. The axle holes on the road wheels were a bit larger than the cocktail sticks so I used some blu-tack to get a snug fit. The return rollers didn't have holes, but thin pins which correspond to holes in the mounts. To get them mounted on the sticks, I cut a few cotton swab rods (the plastic tube kind) into small sections to act as adapters.

Bob, did you expect to ask and not see!

Actually, the Excel "Helping Hands" were a gift from Santa (SWMBO) after my home made contraption kept on breaking and she was subjected to hearing some rather vulgar epithets.

As all can see, I am almost done the JPz interior. Not too fancy but something to look at through the open hatches. Just a tad more interior scuffing to do and a touch up here and there.

Ive been painting like mad this last 3 days to get finished. Decals and washes complete today. Final weathering tomorrow ... would have made it.
But ... its good news. I can take my time now that the worst is complete, and also get the figures and base complete before that.

Frank,

Me too! I've been working on that old Tamiya Panzer IV kit thinking I would have it done on time but noooo . . . I had to go and try to see if I could bring the kit up to a better level of detail from its early '70's offering. I should have heeded your warning concerning this kit and kept at my original build for this campaign - which I still intend on finishing even after the campaign is over. I'll post some pics of the Tamiya Panzer IV before painting begins. Still good news about the extension.

Mark, you can do one more build in this campaign and keep us slow pokes company. After that perhaps join the other Braille Scale builders in the BB campaign.

As for my JPz, I finally got all the tools, racks and side armour on and a base coat of dark yellow done on the upper hull. The lower hull is all but complete and the interior needs a bit of touvh up after the spraying.

Happy New Year to all.

But got a lot to do before Sept, train show. hope to have a 1/35 dio oof a german railway yard with all my WWII armor on rail and railway guns done. to show the public there is more to trains then, layout and the standard scales. ie. HO and N. Thereare a few guys here that also do the railway armor. so I hope to get them to join in.

Was thinking of doing a whirilwind for the dio, and post to this forum.

Last week, when I still thought the campaign was ending with 2010, I finally picked this kit up again. It would never have been finished in time, but at least (thought I) I'd make an attempt to move it farther along....
