11 out of 83 enlisted participants? I don't know about anyone else but I could sure use an extension here. I keep putting in as much time as I can on my build but work (lots of overtime), new vehicle for the wife, and upcoming holiday shopping has slowed my progress down. I thought I would have my build at least ready for paint by the first week in December but here I am still working on the turret . . . well back to the modeling bench - now that I have a little time.

Me too, an extension would really hit the spot. I've got my build all primed and the track links cleaned up, but I'm not sure whether I can get it done within the deadline.

I will check with the brass around here for a two months extension, That will be enough time (I think); just 4 days more and it will be Christmas, wonder what Santa will bring to me (jejeje!!! )

Happy Modeling

Sorry finally got it
I just jumped into this campaign. The Panzer IV has always been my favorite tank to build (except the roadwheels). Due to my work being semi-seasonal I have the next 13 days off so I thought I would give this one a shot. Construction should be a snap and the painting should not be too bad its just the weathering and washes that may trip me up. See what happens with this one hope I get it in on time

February 31, but you promised!

Anyway, great to have that extension. Thanks!

A little update: painting underway:

After a coat of primer, I airbrushed some black preshading to corners, recesses etc. The dunkelgelb is Xtracrylics. Straight from the bottle, it looked quite dark and leaning towards brown, so I added some German tank interior cream to lighten it up a little. After some experimentation, I settled on 4 parts dunkelgelb to 1 part interior cream.
What do you think?

I think that the colours on German AFVs later in the war were so variable I think you could have used almost any shade of yellow you wanted and still have been correct Eetu...

2 months extension!! Blimey.. That is a long extension..

Emeritus: as Warreni says, almost any shade of color will do, but I like the one you acomplish. Thats the good think about painting German armor (or planes for that mater); even when you are so wrong, you are so right.

YEAHHHH! Thank you and Gary Kato for the extension. Now it's off to the work bench to get some building done.

@ muttley - Really great job on that dated kit. Good to see you took the time to add the zimmerit coating, I haven't had the courage to try that myself yet. I also like the transparent effect you achieved with the camouflage.

@ FredRMA - You should be able to get your build done now with the 2 month extension.

@ rtvmodeler - Outstanding job! You should be very proud. Your efforts in adding an interior along with your painting skills are superb.

@ Emeritus - That looks really good. Thanks for the tip for using the German tank interior cream to lighten the Dunkelgelb.

Seasons Greetings Panzer IV fanatics. It was originally my intention to join this wonderful campaign but my own campaign and other obligations got in the way. I have been dropping by to see how things have progressed and seen some of your fantastic builds.

I noticed today that this campaign has been extended until February. Thanks to Santa bringing me a couple of Pz IV variants, and perhaps too much Christmas cheer, I have insanely enlisted. The subject of my participation will be:

It is basically the rerelease of the old ESCI kit. I have built the older kit in the distant past and this one has some differences. The most notable is the replacement of the rubber band tracks with link and length type and new much thinner side skirts. I will attempt to build this OOTB but if you know me, I make no promises.

Cheers,
Jan

Jan,

Glade to see you here. I have the old ESCI release in the stash with a set of CMK Panzer IV tracks for it. I'll get around to building it sometime after I get through with all of the Campaigns that I have already enlisted myself in . . . With that said I'll be looking forward to your build.

Well, my hopes of finishing by Christmas got dashed by too many demands on my time and the dining table! Here's where I got to by last Friday - I should get the rest done by New Year...

By the way, I picked up a set of Tristar replacement tracks labelled as "Pz III/IV" and wondered exactly which tanks they would suit? They're too good for my Tamiya Stug, but I'm thinking of acquiring a more recent Pz IV...

@Braille Hi and how you doing Eddy! I hope that old St. Nick was good to you.

As this kit will likely end up a review I decided to get started immediately after my last post. First issue, the return rollers are really, really, really tight to get on. I managed to get them on and even without glue they aren't going anywhere. The rear idler halves were similarly tight. Here's the kit sprues:

Did I mention that I hate L & L tracks! If you get them on well they can look great but I have yet to have a set totally cooperate. Being smart for a change I dry fitted the sprocket halves and tried to see how the track links would fit. NOT!!!!
Either the teeth are too big or the holes in the tracks are too small. Time for fun with files and sandpaper. I thinned down the teeth on each half, tried the fit and then needed to thin them more. Just to be safe, I filed the individual links. The fit is tight but it worked, sort of.

First link in.

Now only six more to go and then I can start on the other one.

Cheers,
Jan

@tutorca - Mark, that Pz IV looks very interesting; who makes it? Looks like you've done a great job with the mesh side skirts and the supports for them.

It turns out that my Italeri kit is a real hybrid. I checked the Henk of Holland site and it seems that it was released by half a dozen manufacturers. After my research it appears that my kit has the combination of parts from the old ESCI and some from the Hasegawa kit. The L & L tracks appear to be totally new. What I have is a also a mixture of parts from many variant kits with new instructions. Speaking of instructions, there are references to part numbers but no numbers on the sprue. You have to refer to a part numbering diagram of the sprues. Quite strange.

While the pictures don't show it, both sprockets are dome and have the tracks in place. The second sprocket links went easier after I filed the teeth down more.

The sprocket in the next picture is just press fit on.

I am starting to assemble the lower hull now and that has it's own issues. Both the side plates and the floor plate are somewhat warped so they'll need to be coersed into proper position.

This kit doesn't come with Zimmerit so it'll have to be a last batch, late war version. At present I am leaning for a three colour scheme. I would have liked to try the "Ambush" scheme but that appears to only have been carried by the L70 version.

Edit: Additions

The next little bit went faster than I expected. A few really huge sprue attachment points to deal with but the fit wasn't too bad (despite the warped pieces).

As before, the sprockets are dry fitted, as in the upper hull.

I'd like to leave the hatches open but I'll have to do something about the missing fender sections as light would show through even with the side skirts on.

Cheers,
Jan
