Hi guys....
Done!! Picture uploaded to campaing gallery!!
It's Tamiya's old Ausf D, built OOB. I used oil paint filters and added dust to the wheels and tracks with the airbrush for the first time. I'm not a great photographer so it's hard to tell. I had a good time experimenting and I learned something. Fun campaign guys.

Chris,
What a great job you've done! Mine was the old Tamiya kit as well and it is hard to go wrong with their stuff. You are to be commended!
A three beer salute!

Thanks, but don't do that, Bob. I dig your mud job! I wish I had the guts to do that to my models.
@Pete: Thanks. I'm trying to keep up with that fine DAK Panzer you made.
There is some great work going on here. Keep it up, fellas!!

Hi Folks,
It was pointed out (on another forum) that the engine decks on my model were incorrect. I had to 'pop' the ones I had glued there and replace them with new ones that are correct for the tank I am modelling. I am grateful for all this helpful advice, it is nice that people are concerned about the build that it should be as accurate as possible. However, please, no more observations as I want to get the b****y thing painted! .
Here are some photos of the FINAL building work:
All the best,
Paul

Hi Folks,
I have just finished the airbrushing phase of the paint job, just the detail painting, markings, washes and weathering to go. It should be finished by the 31st (hopefully) and I still have the figure to do as well. All go at the moment.
I used Tamyia Fine Surface Primer for the first time and found it excellent, I shall be using it all the time in the future. The good base it gave me made the airbrushing a lot easier and I am very pleased with the results. I hope you all like it as well.
I will post again when I have made some more progress.
All the best,
Paul

Thanks! Glad you like it.
Oh yes, this is indeed my first time doing zimmerit. I did the rear fender flaps first, then the right side of the upper hull, so those areas clearly show how I was in the middle of figuring out the whole process. I'll post a close-up or two later.
Talking of zimmerit, I've finally got it done:
While I wasn't thinking of anymore extra detailing, those fender end retaining springs were just asking for it, so I dediced to replace them with new ones made from wire. Here's one of the front ones already installed, with the kit part for comparison:
Note the awkwardly placed sprue connector on the kit part, right on the spring portion and facing out.
Next it's time to attach the fenders and glue the upper hull in place.

Some more progress on my entry, I think it's now ready for priming. All that was left to do was mostly small parts, like adding the spare track wheel rack on the left fender, the spare track holders on the glacis plate, the two pins on top of the front plate which hold the hull hatches when opened, etc.
The kit parts for towing cable holders on the rear hull seemed very flimsy, the locators being half-round and the holes not that long. These were promptly moved to the leftovers pile after serving as templates for replacements made from steel pins.
With the cable mounts in place, I just had to try them out. I'm glad I did, as it turned out I hadn't followed the kit instructions the way Dragon intended. The instructions showed the cable with the styrene end pieces in place and a cable lenght of 150mm pointed out. I of course had read that too quickly and without further though, cut out 15cm pieces of string and glued the end loops in place. The instructions happened to mean just what was pictured, 15cm pieces of cable between the end pieces...
Dryfitted, the cables then of course turned out a few millimeters too short. The good thing is that I discovered that now instead of right at the final assembly.
There! Those should be the last parts I'll knock off by accident.
Note the scratchbuild fender spring. The made the rear attachment the same as the front to get it more robust, so it's not 100% correct. This is also the spot where I started with the zimmerit! I don't remember anymore if it was the left or the right I did first, but it's the rear fenders I started with.
Another thing that caught my attention was the way Dragon handled the machine guns. While the full hull MG is very nice, it's made so that it needs to be attached from the rear. Not that convenient as I wanted to paint the barrel separately and attach it after painting. I ended up simply cutting away the barrel and replacing the rest of the MG assembly with a piece of styrene rod. Add pin between the two parts and Voilą !
The turret MG is moulded as just the very tip of the barrel protruding from the mantlet, with an empty socket provided as an option. To get an MG I could paint separately, I cut away the barrel tip and glued it to a piece of styrene rod and glued the unarmed part to the mantlet. I wonder why Dragon didn't provide the empty MG socket and a separate MG barrel in the first place?
There! Now it's time to go prime this thing.

Heres my entry guys
Wirbelwind by Monogram in 1/32 scale. Vintage kit from the 70's that i got from Ebay for a cheap price
Simply built it straight from the box and just added Milliput for zimmerit. Now for all you rivet counters out there, I know I know its not accurate there's a lot of flaw in it, the inside of the turret is completely wrong blah blah blah, jeez live with it will ya
Weathering is simple oil wash with burnt auburn and dry brushing for the raised parts, lower hull was also buffed with Mig pigments to simulate dust.
This was a great campaign and I enjoyed it a lot

Ya mean it's possible to finish before the last day of a campaign? Maybe some day, if I get a following wind!
My Stug IV is camo'd and decaled, but still needs lots of detail paint & weathering over the next week or so. And I must grab some more pics to post...
That Monogram Wirbelwind really takes me back, Muttley - you did a great job!

Thanks for the positive response guys
Tom = thanks, and to think the camo finish is fictional simply because I screwed up on my airbrush control while desperately trying to follow an actual panzer tri color
Bob= thanks, I actually "sniped-bid" this kit for $12 with free shipping, I felt bad for the guy I outbided, but hey I needed it more for this campaign bwa ha ha har!
Pete= thanks, I love old kits because these were models that I couldnt afford when I was a kid, so now im an old coot and these oldies are cheap on ebay - its payback time!
