Kimmo and Jeremy thank you for your efforts. I have taken a look at the link and it is worth consideration, my only complaint would be the need for 2 sets in order to have enough of the correct type. I am however still considering making a mask and painting them as I am rather enjoying the DIY aspect of the hobby at the moment, that said if a set was available that covered this specific vehicle I would most likely jump at it.

This may sound stupid but my Aunt has a real problem with the Swastika and as she is now living nearby my life would be made a misery if I used one. That is why I like the Finnish markings and camo;
1. It is a good mix of colour which adds interest.
2. The markings are colourful and distinctive while avoiding any grief for me.
When I was a kid she would remove the Swastika’s from the decal sheets.

I have just taken a closer look at the decal sheets and none of them offer the short legged blue swastika, so I will have to do it by hand.

Err..., Darren. Short legged finnish swastika was never blue, it was always black&white. Long legged finnish svastika was in early stages of war blue but if I have a right info, was later painted black.

Hi Darren.
If you want to build more finnish scale model armour later, this book would be handy for you: "The Finnish armoured vehicles 1918-1997" by Esa Muikku & Jukka Purhonen. It´s in both finnish and english text. I just checked confirmation for my last reply into this thread from that book.

If I am honest Kimmo I like the look of the KV tank and the Finnish examples look even better to my eye, so I will most likely not go this book as I am trying to talk the wife into getting me Neil's book on the KV. Thank you again for the information.

Darren: The issue with your aunt is understandable. Not sure why you brought it up though. The Finnish tanks are quite the eye candy for armour fans and I would choose one over a German unit any day.

Regarding the markings for your model, I noticed two things. First being that there are few markings, and they are quite simple and shouldn't be a problem making masks or stencils for. The second thing that I noticed was that there were a few pictures of Finnish KV-1's without any markings whatsoever. Not sure what this means, or if it is legitimately applicable.

I wasn't aware that Neil has a KV book out, is there a link where I can find one?

Jeremy only because I can get away with the Finnish markings as;
1. I believed they were blue.
2. They are short legged.

Darren: I fully understand what you are saying, it just seemed to come out of the blue so to speak as I don't remember anybody questioning your choice. I would probably have to build Finnish vehicles myself for the same reasons If I were building captured tanks used by Axis powers.

That is not that difficult as I will just mask with bluetack (in the USA I believe silly putty is a close product), I will admit that doing the Finnish crosses has me thinking about how I am going to tackle a stencil for it.


Darren, if you want to go easier way, a word of comfort for you: finnish KV-1E was two months after capturing in Finnish Army green overall. After that it was repainted to that more showing three-colour scheme. Of course, markings differ slightly from your campaign project. Just found that out, while reading finnish "IPMS-mallari" magazine on KV-1E.

Yep, I know that set Darren but I´ve passing it because of price..... so far.
60 euros here in Europe of it, is too pricey IMO. That´s a price of 2 Trumpeter KV kits!!

Greetings from Downunder!

Not long to go now folks and I am having a practice run on one I started earlier this year. I have six more in the stash ..


Base coat is on the hull.


The kit gives you a choice of rubber band tracks or link and length. I tried the link and length for fit and they are as tight as Magic Tracks. I have already assembled them after this photo was taken a little while ago.


SOrry for the dodgy photo but here are the road wheels and return rollers on stcks just after they were painted.

No problems so far except for a slightly warped fender that straightens out when you install it on the hull.

Don't forget they are on Special at the moment at some retailers for under US$17 which I think is a bargain for these highly detiled Trumpeter kits.

BTW, I think this is the small turret tank. The box is in the other room and I am too lazy to go and look!

Hey all,

I also would like to join the campain, if still possible.
I simply love those russian designs, they all look so brutal.
I will visit my local hobby shop this week trying to score some trumpeter KV kit preferably the ehkranami or the new '39 version. Also looking for some reference photos. Anyone has some battle damaged or KV with stowage photos?

I just realised something as I was reading a review of the Zvezda KV-1s that are on special at Dragon USA at the moment.. but don't bother buying them as they have many 'issues'... See if you can spot the 'deliberate' mistake in the in-progress photos of my KV-1 "Small Turret"...
