Hey all,
Found myself a nice KV model from trumpeter this week, not he enkranami i wanted but the 1942 model heavy cast turret. I m really excited to start the campain. I am starting to study the osprey book KV1&2 heavy tanks. I will make an overall green tank and not he white / green one on the box art.
Can't wait for the 1st of january

I would recommend not using the Tamiya Kv-2 kit unless you don't care about the detail. This kit has so many inaccuracies, it is hardly worth opening. I would recommend the trumpeter kit.
Here is a link to my build of the tamiya kit. I spent a ridiculous amount of time replacing and scratch building things already present in the trumpeter kit.

Panzerdoc, thanks for the heads up but it is all about the journey (building in my case) as apposed to realism. As long as I enjoy the build and it looks good in the end then it was a fantastic journey , my rivit counting days are over and I leave it to those much more knowleable and better builders than I to produce those magnificent builds. So build on and share your tips with the rest of us to be able to get better at a project

Bob, well said, I to build also for the enjoyment of the journey. I to will be building and older Tamiya kit #35142 the KV-1 that I bought from a member here but mine came with some AM PE so I will be using AM for the 1st time.
Unfortunately I wont be able to start my build @ 00:01 hrs cause I will be running around making sure my cops are not getting shot at from celebratory gunfire in the projects

Sal, be safe and take care of your crew. I have not gone out on NEW YEARS EVE or the morning after for over 30 years now, it does not pay to be caught by the idiots. I will stay in, eat some nice goodies (cashews, ice cream, candy, diet soda) and enjoy some building.

Well! This is an easy build and I needed that 
The only problem was losing an exhaust peice to the carpet monster 
I made a replacement from some sprue and heated the end then flattened it. My resoning is it was repaired in the feild and they did a hurried job. You can see the difference in the kit part and mine.
Another part was lost to the so I made a hand hold from round stock. Also the fit of the turret was not the best on the front so some Tamiya Surface Primer was used and sanded to take away the overlapping seam and to give it some texture. The build took around 1 1/2 hours with cutting parts from the sprue, applying surface primer and sanding taking the most time.

I don't think they would have worried too much about it in the field as they would have been too busy dodging Germanic lead to worry much about an exhaust.. But well done none the less..

Bob, looks like a quick clean built, looking forward to seeing it with some paint. The exhaust piece don't look to bad may be take a file to it to round it out a bit

@ Warren: I agree that speed was the order of the day in combat for repairs.
@ Sal: a file was thought of, but I wanted to wait and give the glue time to make everthing sturdy before puting any pressure on it. I think that a winter scheme will be the most trouble that this kit will give me, its been so easy so far (shake and bake) I need to review the hair spray technique again after my last fiasco And how did your crew fair last night?

After having my fingers go numb making Zim on my Tiger last night I decided to take a closer look at my Tamiya KV-1
Apparently the former owner of the kit has started to remove the fender brackets
So i figured this is where the AM PE comes in
The problem is that this kit is to be used a jig to make new brackets
So being that I really dont do scratch building what do I use to make the brackets and the rivets that have already been removed

Sal, the pieces for the fender brackets are in your pe kit there, you shouldn't need the kit to use as a jig. you can make you own bolt with styrene rod or hexagonal rod as needed. you could go the more expensive route of PE bolts or the nutter. Good luck

The PE brackets are .010 thick and the directions say to use .030 thick. Also where to you get this styrene stuff that I keep haring about, can I get it at a craft store, my on line model hobby shop don't carry it

I just dug this set up from the vault, of course the directions are missing but it looks straightforward. Again, I can't see why you would need a jig. Looks like the fender brackets are in 3 pieces. there is a groove down the rectangular pieces to help you align the triangular bracket. Glue or solder away.

Read and understood..
What do you all think? Was the JSU or ISU-152 based on the KV-1 OR the JS2? I am not sure as I don't have tons of reference stuff like many of you do. I open the question up to the forum...
