Hellofajob getting rid of all those pin-marks. Looks really busy
Posted: Thursday, July 07, 2011 - 05:25 AM UTC
Hi all!
I'm a huge fan of Tamiya. Me and my buddy we have even been toting Tamiya bumperstickers for the last ten years.
After a long pause fifteen years ago my half finished Schwimmwagen got me jumpstarted and I've been hooked ever since.
Now for this campaign I'm planing on something I've been dreaming about for two years now since I seen it done in Scale Aviation Modeller International:
A Blitzbau.
That means I plan on building a Tamiya model within 24 hours soup to nuts. I will document the process with time evidence and you'll get a starting pic with newspaper so nobody gets suspicious.
Don't know if it can be done since it will be a quarterscale kit and a spitfire or mustang at that.
But the best part: I get do do this together with my buddy Middle_Franconian. He'll be modelling a Mig 17 methinks. I got him to squeeze some spare time off his girl and my wife wasn't too miffed about a smelling kitlittered frantic man cave since she won't be in the country for the weekend.
All obstacles cleared then.
Anyway, I hope plenty of updates within a realtively small timeframe.
We'll start in less than two weeks so stay tuned!

Not yet sure if I will do the #1 car of Klaus Ludwig/ Steve Soper or the #2 car of Pierre Dieudonne/ Gianfranco Brancatelli

Here is my entry for the campaign:
35232 Centaur
35222 Cromwell PE
89618 British Tank Crew
35223 British Infantry on Patrol
35229 Allied Vehicle Accessory Set
I decided I would take the theme of "Total Tamiya" quite literally, all of the aftermarket and accessories are going to come from Tamiya...with the possible exception of some Bison Decals.
I've always like Tamiya kits with their easy, straight forward and simple builds. Despite newer companies putting out kits with higher parts counts, PE and indi tracks, I'll stick with the Tamiya version if one is available. It always seemed to me that the late '90s marked a comeback/rebirth for Tamiya with a great number of new kits being produced around that time. Before that, with a few exceptions here and there, most of the stuff seemed to be from the '70s. Which is all very coincidental because I grew up building those '70s era kits and after a brief break, came back to modeling in the late '90s as well.
Anyway, enough with the typing, I'm off to crack open those boxes.....

I've come to a standstill with this kit for now. Waiting for some Sin Filters and Mig Pigments to arrive in the mail. I have the road wheels painted flat black and I am just on my way downstairs to paint the rubber bands a rusty color.

After two and half hours I have the rubber-band tracks for the M41 nearly painted.
The track was initially primed with some primer I bought at Lowes, but it started to flake so I scrubbed as much as I could off of it. After that I re-painted with Model Master Acryl Rust using an airbrush and then hand-painted the rubber pads using Vallejo Black.
Will have to finish them on Sunday or Monday. Going out of town tomorrow but hopefully I will have some time to work on it in the evening.

@ Chris great looking tracks
@ Sherb, going all Tamiya, I love it looking forward to seeing your project
@ Chris WOW a race car, haven't build 1 of those in over 30 years
My kit was OOB and it came with 4 figures, 3 that i was gonna use and 1 that i didnt think would look right climbing up on a prototype vehicle, so he was eliminated. But then I said self something is missing so to the spare parts box I went and found a Tamiya Officer
I think he looks good on the back of the vehicle with the loaders on opposite sides
Please let me know what you think. I will be off to the store to get some of that Pledge/Futures tomorrow before I go any further
Oops need to add a little paint between those 2 front road wheels

Chris - it's coming together nicely. Seeing your mantlet dust/water guard tarp thing reminds me I have to get back on my Pershing. I found Taps Plastics here in my town and got some Magic sculpt for tarps and maybe try this for the mantlet vs tissue paper....hmmm
Sal - the commander in the back looks fine from here.

Thanks Greg, I got some more work done on it today. Got up early and shot it with some Futures 1st thing this morning
Applied the decals, washed the crew with a buff and the vehicle with a dark wash this afternoon
Being that this vehicle was a proto-type I didn't want to mud it up, clog it up with gear or over due the weathering. Other than painting and adding the officer, and a coat of Dull I thinks this is just about finished. Please comments are always welcome

Sal, for some reason your washes ran away from the details instead of towards them???

Yeah I noticed that too This was my 1st time using Futures, I thought I gave it a pretty good coat and it felt dry before I added the wash, so I dont know why it did that

@Sal: How did you apply your Future? Did you give it a good coating around everything? Very strange patterns.
@Greg: I didn't like the tissue method. This was my first scratch-built mantlet cover and now that it's on, it's going to be good enough for this project. Not like the Tamiya M-41 is a piece of art straight from the box anyway. I bought some Magic Sculpt last fall but ended up giving it to Ben Jakobsen so he could use it in his sculpting. I saw his last week and took half of it back after he showed me some tricks on how to use putty. It was much nicer to work with than Milliput or AB epoxy. Not as sticky.

I will avoid the tissue method for sure then, but yours did turn out good. It does seem like sculpting the cover would be less messy. It'll be my first cover so can just do my best. Congrats again on getting past that step and for the tip

ok guys ive just signed up for the campaign as ive found two tamiya kits which ive not touched haha
ive got the tamiya british bren carrier eu campaign and british infantry. my debate is whether to do a dio including both sets or just one dio with bren carrier resting or another of british infantry patrolling, or both together.. ideas are still runing in head! but ive made a start on crew members for bren as theyre only arms torso assembly...

OK, guys. This is it. The grand day out.
Just to repeat: me and my buddy (who's bound to come over to my place any minute now) are going to do a 'Blitzbau' like sometimes hosted on The Unofficial Airfix Modellers Forum and as published by the famed Mike Grant (the decal guru) in SAMI some years ago.
24 hours to finish a kit soup to nuts. We'll post as many pics as possible inbetween (hope this is not going to be a documentary of how we went more akin to 'were we are right now') with real time evidence. Like Newspaper in the background and a radiocontrolled watch in the pic.
Man. Feel so exited...

Here we go.
Gentleman, start your engines.
My buddy's Horten will be posted soon as we figure a way how to hook into his account from here...

And after four and a half hours of modeling, lots of beer and coffee finally some paint:
Off to weathering.
Man, my back already hurts. More beer....

Got the pit done, fuselage halves and wings are glued together. I'm too tired to post pics though.
First thing in the morning.

Hi folks!
I don't need any excuses for another Tamiya build!
@ Sal. I was going through the thread. Those pin marks were positively evil. Your flak-panzer is looking pretty good now though.
Anywho,
This is my entry:
My good wife got me the kit for Christmas, but I've been so busy with other kits I haven't started building this one yet. If I don't get this one built, I'll never get another kit from her again!
